She padded beside him, hand curled around his. She had forgotten how easily he could chase her fears and doubts away. She noticed the slight change in color, the bright red fading to a dark green and chuckled. "You enjoy marking off your area's don't you?"
Her laugh died as she approached the reindeer, seeing the beasts snorting and pawing at the ground. She pulled away, putting a hand out to pet one of them. "Well hello, beautiful." She murmured, petting the soft muzzle and leaned down to press a kiss to the gentle animal. "You find the most amazing people, you know that? These are Sahnsia reindeer aren't they?"

Her lips brushed his hand as he wipes the tear from her eyes and then she was in his arms again and she was a young girl, unmarried and free in her best friend's arms.
Placing a hand on his cheek, she caught his tears with her thumb and nodded. "I would like that, Chris." She murmured, tucking the little runner into her transcendentally dimensional pocket.
"Unfortunately, at this moment, this is all I have to wear." She gestured at her rumpled green dress. "And Liz... is being a little shit, and probably won't be back until after the new year with my TARDIS... I don't know if I'll be presentable..." She was making excuses, she knew that the moment it slipped from her lips. She didn't want to impose on him, not with them not having seen each other for decades.
She wasn't sure when their paths would cross after they parted, and that thought had her hearts clenching and she knew that she wouldn't spend much time away from him now that they found each other again.

She turned to look at him, swallowing, unable to bring up her Ms. Frizzle persona and be naturally loud. She couldn't hide behind falsehoods, not with her beloved friend.
And so she pushed her darkness aside for him, unwilling to bring him down with her and put a gentle smile on her face, just happy to see him. "Thank you, my dearest Chris. It's beautiful." She reached for it, noting that it was made from the broken dancer.
Holding it tightly, she hesitantly stepped forward and wrapped her arms around his neck. Inhaling she took in his musky scent and her smile grew slightly, hidden in his shoulder.
If anyone said anything about the hug lingering a little longer than normal, or the way her eyes glittered with a different kind of tears when she stepped back, ducking her head to examine the figurine, she would deny it.
But as the first tear hit the stand as she watched the little woman run, hair flowing back from her head, she was unable to deny the joy that coursed through her that she had found her best friend again.

Veritas collected the clockwork couple, and stood smiling down at her little companion - who would not let her out of his sight it seemed, not that she minded. Slightly padding her way down to his workshop, his faithful TARDIS keeping her from being lost again.
Raising her her hand, she went to tap, but hesitated. She wanted to see him, but was ashamed of the way she had fled before. She was supposed to be a warrior, a brave strong valkyrie and she had fled like a frightened child.
Letting her hand drop, she pressed her head to the door, looking down at her friend. "I'm such a fool. I'll never be the child that ran through the meadow with him."
Turning she slumped to the floor, cradling her creation. "We used to be best buddies.. But now.. Now we're not.. and I don't know if we can regain that. I don't know how to regain that.." She whispered.
"He deserves to be happy. He's done so much good for this world. I can't make him happy, Jaems. I don't know how. I'm not a good friend... I'm not a good person." She laid the figure by the door and stood, looking at it with sadnesss. "I'm just a sad old woman, who's youth hides demons. Who wants to know a person like that." She began to walk away from the workshop down, the words on her dress echoing her self loathing.

She woke to Jaems holding out a cup to her and smiled. "Thank you." She smiled, sipping her tea. Brushing her dress off, she wished she had another to change into, then shrugged. "Where did Chris go?" Her elf sent her images of him in his workshop, working hard. "We won't bother him."
Biting her lip, she sank down in the chair that he had occupied when she had woken the first. Reaching in her pocket, she pulled a handful of metal bits and gears out of her pocket. "Do you think you could get me a sautering iron and a clockwork motor?" She asked him, intent on making Chris a little gift to thank him for helping her.
The little man ran out, retreiving the stuff she requested, then sat and watched intently as the various pieces became a dancing couple, rotating in a waltz. She started slightly as she realized that she had unconsciously echoed herself and Chris, as they were now, dancing. "I'm not as good as he is, they'd be actually dancing rather than spinning, but do you think he'll like it?" She asked.

By the time she was found, she had slipped into a dreamless sleep. She grumbled slightly as he lifted her, but snuggled into his warmth, clutching at his shirt. The excited babble of the elves, the little creatures happy to have found their 'Mother' covered the sound of the figurine she clutched, falling to the ground.
The little elf she had bonded with saw it fall an ran over, picking up the pieces, tucking them away until he could look at them and try to fix it.
Veritas woke in a soft, warm bed that cradled her, a dozing Chris next to the bed, a soft snore slipping from him. She smiled fondly and slid out of bed, her bare feet silently hitting the floor. She glanced around and figured Chris had brought her to his room so she could rest.
She started silently when she looked down to she her elf friend and she sat down on the floor with a smile. Touching her head to his, she gently asked him what was the matter and he held out her dancer, one of her legs broken off as well as her  head and arm, with the impression of deep sadness.
Setting it aside, she pulled the elf into her arms, holding him and thanking him for taking care of her. "Jaems, I appreciate everything you've done for me."  She whispered, careful not to wake Chris, tears pricking at her eyes again. I only hope I can make him happy. I've missed my friend. She added silently.
She began weaving the tale of how she and Chris met, sorrow twanging in her heart as she picked up the broken bronze dancer. When she she got to the part that she had intended to bind herself to him, she cut herself off and stood. Forgive me, my friend. I am still tired I think. She smiled at him.
Jaems bowed and stepped out, preparing to fetch her tea. Veritas, stood there, looking at the broken dancer and laid it on the nightstand, moving to lay back down in the bed that smelled like her friend.

Her mouth opened in protest as he barreled out, the smell hitting her like a ton of bricks. Fight or flight triggered, she rushed the opposite way, fleeing the flames and fire in a blind terror.
When she finally stopped, she was in a dark corridor, alone and lost in an unfamiliar TARDIS. With a sigh, she sat against the wall, drawing her knees up to her chest, arms around her legs.
She was ashamed of herself for running, but the smell... It brought back the memories of the war, of her laser blades slicing down Dalek and Gallifreyan a like, a hoard of children behind her as she screamed out in victory, that the doll had triggered in full force. Pulling it out, she cradled it, trying to calm herself and banish the fear that permeated her being.
Unbidden, her mind searched out the elf she made a connection to, and sought comfort, her heart supplying the image of Chris into the message. She slumped over, exhausted as her panic seeped from her with the knowledge that she would be found, and slipped into unconsciousness as her mind began to heal the damage, and seal the memories away for another time.

Her hands were shaking for a whole different reason, and she sat down, hard, in the chair she had claimed, staring at the flower. "I never.." She began, and her eyes widened. "You remembered.. The last time I wore gold. Our graduation." she murmured. "I never wore gold after that." She knew he preferred the gold on her, rather than the silver jewelry her husband used to make her wear.
She reached for his hand, laying the flower aside. "But.. why would you keep that? Chris.." She wanted to embrace him, push aside everything and bring back that joy they used to have, before she became the Mother and was still simply Veritas. She didn't know if he wanted that, or if she was remembering imagined feelings.

She bit her lip, catching it with a long tooth, before taking the doll back and tucking it into her dress. "Yes." She said simply. "It was my anchor during the war."
She fought the war for her son, but knowing Chris was out there kept her sane and gave her hope during her darkest moments. Moments she'd rather forget, forget all the blood on her hands.
She didn't realize her hands were shaking as she stared at them, lost in her memories, lost in the horrors she had seen and committed.

She raised the cup in a mock toast. "Maybe they just like me better." She tea. "Thank you." She address the elf with a smile, and pulled a small back of cookies from her pocket, offering it to the little elf, making sure her thoughts were full of gratitude. "For the doll as well." She was pretty sure this was the same little elf that had pressed the doll into her arms while they were walking.
She wouldn't admit it out loud, but that was same little dancer that that he had given her when they had first met, the reason they that they had become friends. She carried it around with her, the doll giving her some semblance of sanity during the war, when the mother turned warrior was set loose on a horde of Daleks.

Headcanon - relationships.
Veritas befriended Chris when they were both fairly young, him a good bit younger than she. They grew up close - very 'intimate' with lots of hand hand holding and hugs (gestures that were taboo in Gallifreyan culture), and when the time came for Veritas to marry, she wanted to go with Chris. However, neither had admitted their affection to the other, and he was of a lower status than she was so her parents did not allow it.
Instead they married to her the Lungbarrow heir, and they loomed three children, Brax, Theta and Drash. Brax took after his father, but Theta and Drash loved to play with Veritas' childhood friend, who quickly gave them the affection and they craved, feeding the thoughts of 'this is wrong, we should change this and help others'.
Then the war hit and Theta smuggled Chris out of the Kasterberous System, to a small planet that both Theta and Veritas had grown fond of.  The war ended at a terrible cost and Veritas lost track of her friend for several decades, until they met back up just recently.

She heard the tone, and knowing she had hurt him, she wrapped her arms around him, knowing that the simple gesture would shock him. "I'm sorry, my friend." She murmured in Gallifreyan, knowing their native tongue would mean more to him.
She pulled back, reaching into a pocket to place a small clock work dancer in front of him. "Remember these? I have hundreds of them that you and Drash used to make." She smiled and moved back to her chair, picking up the stuffed bear and beginning to sew again, humming a lullaby she used to sing to her children when they were little.
It morphed into a rendition of Silver Bells, and she smiled, wishing for some tea to drink while she stitched, content to spend time with her friend, one that she had missed for so long.

"Being a school bus suits her much more than a carpet bag or a motorcycle," she smiled and squeezed his hand, her other find the key and unlocking her TARDIS. "Come lad," She tugged him up, windering her way throw rows of seats to the back door, which she opened into her sitting room, a lushly velvet room decorated in burgandy.
On the mantle was a set of little mechanical toys and a stack of well worn books, centuries old by the looks of them. "What happened with your sister?" She asked, fingers brushing the small artifacts as Lizzy bustled around getting stuff for tea. A hand dipped into her pocket and pulled out a banana, which she tossed to him, a small grin on her face.

She flushed slightly, glancing up to catch his eyes. "This is the first I've picked up to sew since before.." Her voice caught and she looked back down at the little dog she was finished stuffing, holding it in her hands. "I've met one of my grandchildren, other than Arkytior. I didn't get to see her grow up though.. I've had no reason to sew." She stitched the dog up and laid it with the rabbit, before picking a black teddy bear.
She glanced at the doll laying against her side, in her plum dress. "I miss it.. Being a mother and a grandmother.." She held the plush bear in her lap, watching him shape the scooter. Setting it down, she got up to stand with him, close enough that they were almost touching, so she could watch what he was doing.
