“ I never dream of missing the parties, especially the best ones.” She smiled, allowing herself to give in for a moment, wrapping Emma in a warm embrace. “You know, the proper pureblood things.” Narcissa murmured as she released the girl. “Keeping myself out of trouble, planning for the wedding.” She kept the smile on her face despite the reservations in her heart. “And you? What have you been getting yourself into?”
Emma hugged her back before pulling back and looking at Narcissa’s face. She smiled and nodded. She forgot that Narcissa was engaged to Lucius. Again she felt slightly bitter that she hadn’t been the one to hook Narcissa up with someone. “Sounds great. Hows that going?” She tilted her head, giving her another small smile. “Well, I’ve gone and gotten myself a big girl ministry job.” She rolled her eyes and grimaced. “I’m an auror.”

Narcissa had never missed a party and she certainly wasn’t going to start by missing one of Lorcan’s. Everyone who was anyone was present and it was no secret that she was one of the best. She had found her way to the dance floor after enjoying a drink with a few of her friends from school but as she caught a glimpse of a familiar way she made her way over. “Emma Vanity.” She greeted, her tone almost surprised that she was here but she wore a smile as she was pleased to have ran into her, knowing that their were certainly worse people here. “I haven’t seen you since the last day of term. You look well.”
Emma looked up and smiled at the familiar girl. “Narcissa Black. I was wondering when you’d show up!” She nodded. “Things have been really crazy. You look great as well.” She squeezed Cissa’s hand, grinning at her. “What have you been up to recently?”

Roland had seen Emma around the school over the past few months. He’d been jittery in her presence, trying to figure out how to talk to her. Every time he got near he ended up walking in the opposite direction. He couldn’t count the number of times Doe had teased him about it. He was trying. He really was! She was just so pretty and he thought she’d never speak to him. Finally, one morning after potions class, he finally knocked up enough courage to stop her in the hallway and ask her on a proper date. He didn’t know what he was doing but he knew he wanted to spend time with her. Much to his surprise, she’d said yes.
So he’d ran to Lily immediately, asking her for advice on what to do. ‘Take her to the Black Lake! Get some food from the kitchens.“ She’d said, and he followed her advice probably a bit too well. By the time he was done in kitchens the next evening, he was lugging two baskets full of food. He was certain that was entirely too much. On top of one of the baskets he had a blanket and wrapped inside was a bottle of goblin wine that he’d knicked from Slughorn’s office. He made it safely to the edge of the lake, laying out the blanket with great care.
He’d been developing his magic over the past few years, working on spells from his grandfather’s collection, and was incredibly grateful for them. From one of the books, he’d learned how to create roses that burst into showering stars upon contact, without injury to the holder. Those were sitting in a vase in the center of the red blanket, surrounded by sandwiches and muffins. There were all kinds of fruits and puddings as well. He fidgeted with his shirt, nerves all over again, while he waited for her and hoped she’d show.
Honestly, he felt a little sick to his stomach, but he chalked that down to the fact that this was the first time he’d ever asked a girl on a date. Especially since she was the prettiest girl in school. At least, he thought she was. Roland cared naught for other people’s opinions, as he’d learned quite quickly that some of the students his friends disliked were actually pretty decent people. Except for that Amycus bloke that had graduated. He was glad to see him gone. He reached for the wine, and balanced two goblets carefully, watching as the red liquid filled the cups.

Emma had spent most of her time setting people up on dates, hand picking who would work together and who wouldn’t. She would give people advice, give them a little push here and a little push there. And when she wasn’t doing that, she was out on the quidditch pitch playing chaser and being team captain. She had noticed Roland in the hall, his shaggy brown hair that she wanted to run her fingers through. He kept popping up everywhere she went and it made her curious. She was usually so busy hooking up other people that she hadn’t even thought about herself. They shared a couple classes together and she couldn’t help but stare at him. She liked the way he looked but also she was thinking if he could be a good match for her.
When he finally asked her out after class one day, she had looked at him with her bright brown eyes and a smile on her face and said yes. Emma had taken her time getting ready for the date, changing her outfit more than once. She ran her hand through her black hair, frowning at herself in her mirror. Since when did she second guess outfits? She was so confident with making other people happy, that she felt a little off put in her own love life. She brushed at her skirt, pulled the arms of her sweater up slightly, and fixed the head band in her hair. Emma ran a finger over the pearls around her neck and shifted onto the balls of her feet.
Emma made her way down to the black lake, rubbing her cherry red lips together and pushing a strand of hair behind her ear. She felt butterflies and it threw her for a loop. She’d never been nervous about anything, is this how everyone felt going on dates? Making her way down the sloping grass to the lake, she spotted him. He was laying on a blanket spread with a bunch of delicious food and the most beautiful roses she had ever seen. He was pouring wine as she walked up to the blanket, smiling at everything he had prepared for them. As far as first dates went, she was throughly impressed. “Hi Roland.” She spoke softly, again running her hand nervously over her necklace. She sat down next to him, her stomach growling hungrily at all the food and she flushed. “This is amazing.” Emma looked at him, her eyes grazing over his face.

He wanted to hurt her. He couldn’t help the urge. There was something about her, he didn’t remember feeling it as much when she and Alecto were friends, but now all he wanted to do was cause her pain. “I’m glad.” He told her flatly, sipping his tea before taking a bite of his food, trying to sort through his thoughts about her. “It would be a shame if even in your free time you were making terrible life choices. Then again, when you’re spending time with me it can never be a terrible time.”
Emma bit into her sandwich, chewing and looked at him appraisingly. “No I’m good at my personal life.” She wiped her mouth gently with her napkin, smirking at his confidence. She admired it, not many people had it. “Well not that this hasn’t been great, but I really should get going.” She put her napkin on her empty plate, collecting her purse from the seat next to her.

“Does having your ways mean that you have someone who’s having sex with you? At the very least tell me that you have someone on the side to entertain you. You know, making sure that you’re getting something on the regular.” He made a face when he noticed that she was still smirking. Why was she smirking? She shouldn’t still be smirking, she should be feeling bad or wondering why her life wasn’t as good as it could be. Smirking? No. that wasn’t how this was supposed to go. Either he hadn’t tried hard enough or she was even worse off than he’d originally imagined. “Why are you smirking darling? Something entertaining you?”
Emma shrugged her shoulders, still smiling at him. “Occasionally. Not the same person though and not all the time.” She sipped her tea, finishing the cup. Emma was finding this turn in conversation interesting. She loved all sorts of love, whether it was emotional or physical. She furrowed her eyebrows and chuckled slightly. Was she bothering him by being amused? If so it amused her even more and she grinned at him. “Yes. I’m having quite a lovely time.”

Remus walked along the path, passing a few shops that had recently turned him down for a position. He felt a bit awkward. Remus wasn’t one to really get a drink with some stranger, or at least a person he barely know. He tugged on his bagging cardigan and nodded. “Not really no.” He shrugged, his eyes darting away from Emma. Remus didn’t like the fact that he was a failure and he obviously couldn’t speak about the Order. “Have you?”
Emma tapped on the brick wall, feeling the awkwardness pass between them. “I’m in the Auror’s office.” She shrugged her shoulders. She was warming up to her job, but she still hated it. She wanted a job that she enjoyed and one where she wasn’t so stressed out all the time. She walked through the door to The Leaky Caldron, walking straight to the bar. She ordered a fire whiskey, looking over at Remus. “It’s on me.” She smiled at him. Emma sat down on one of the stools. “Do you still hang out with your old group?” She asked, trying to make him more comfortable.

Emma was excited when she had gotten the invite to Lorcan’s party. His parties were always memorable and it was almost like a school reunion in the way that she knew half the people there. Although she wasn’t sure if that really was a good thing, but at least there was people she could make conversation with and that she knew she’d have fun. The first thing Emma did was grab and glass of punch, downing it right away. She wanted to dance, so she made her way to the dance floor, sure she’d run into someone she knew.

It wasn’t that he was ignoring her letters, it was just that he hadn’t had any clue how to respond to them. “I’ve been doing work with the Order and the Ministry. I didn’t really have time…had a mission I was on for a while.” He’d shortened his stride, it had become second nature for him, seeing as he’d always done with when she was walking beside him. He didn’t want her running to keep up with him, and though the pace was leisurely, he was in a bit of a hurry to get inside. “Life has been chaotic. I thought you might be more preoccupied with your auror work to worry about me.” he rolled his shoulders in a shrug, surprised that when they reached the entrance there was a guard standing outside. The feeling washed quickly when they finally got inside and he saw the mess.
He sucked in a breath through his teeth, cocking his head to the side. “It’s a wonder it didn’t come crashing down.” true to his nature, he began exploring the area, looking for anything that might help with the investigation, against his orders. “How are you?” he turned back to her, pushing a hand through his hair. “I am sorry I didn’t respond to you.” that much was true. It wasn’t that he hated her, he never could hate anyone, it wasn’t an emotion he was fond of. He just knew that when they were together the arguments they’d had were not something he wished to repeat. He missed her in the same breath, however. She’d been able to entrance him and infuriate him in the span of mere seconds. All in all, he was attempting to be kind and open even though it went against his better judgment.
Emma nodded slightly, she hated hearing that he was risking his life. She wanted to take Roland and hide him away from all this bad awful shit. Her brow furrowed. “I always worry about you.” She looked at him and then quickly looked away, towards the guard that was standing outside of one of the Ministry entrances. She followed him inside, chewing on her lip. “Stressed. I’m heading the Investigation to find McLaggen.” Emma usually hid how she was really feeling for the most part, but when it came to Roland she couldn’t help but be honest. She rubbed the back of her neck, shaking her head at him. “Don’t worry about it. You were busy.” Emma’s stomach felt like it was in knots. Part of her wanted to disappear from the spot, but she couldn’t help but stay. Roland was like a drug to her, one she couldn’t kick and she wasn’t sure she wanted to. She shuffled her feet slightly, again looking at his wonderfully familiar face. “Listen, I’m sure I’ve taken up enough of your time, but if you ever want to catch up...” She shrugged her shoulders and threw her hands up slightly. “Well I’m sure you’ll be able to find me. You were always good at that.” She smirked at him.

Remus nodded, he knew what busy was like. He spent much of his time going on Order missions in between hanging out with his friends. “That’s good.” He nodded, rocking back and forth on his feet. He studied her face for a moment and smiled back at Emma. “No.” He shook his head, folding his hands together. “Sure, yeah.” He scratched the back of his head. “I’ll join you. Good to catch up with old classmates.” Remus bit his tongue, feeling slightly nervous.
Emma smiled and nodded her head, she continued walking down Diagon Alley towards The Leaky Caldron. She shifted her bags on her arm, glancing over at Remus as they walked. “So have you been up to anything interesting since we left school?” She asked, glancing ahead she could see the brick wall that The Leaky Caldron was magically behind.
