Planet Headcanons part. 4
So, a question.....
How far would you go for a game you're really invested into?
Because well.
Yes, I went out of my way to find a Game Gear rom to see for myself what Ristar's Game Gear version is like. Honestly the experience could be a post of its own, but I'm here to talk about something else.
No, I'm here to talk about the main reason I got this version of the game: a planet which only exists in this version, planet Terra (or planet Fanturn in JP)
First I wanna state the obvious: the Game Gear version is quite different from the Mega Drive version. Different doesn't means bad, though! It's just a whole new experience compared to the Mega Drive version, which is the version most people play, I assume. (Only thing from the Mega Drive version I honestly REALLY miss is the music. I get that different consoles have different capacities, but the Game Gear's music too crunchy for my taste.)
Second disclaimer is that the English version of GG Ristar completetly deletes the first level of planet Terra???? Even the level intro shows a ship instead of the clouds from the JP version. I have no clue why.
(Third disclaimer, I couldn't find a JP rom to play on my own, so I grabbed screenshots from videos. A shame because I really liked the look of the first level :c)
Anyway, planet Terra. In the Game Gear version, planet Terra is the second planet, replacing Undertow. While Undertow is the Water planet, Terra is more in the lines of..... forests and ships?
Well, it's different enough from Undertow because you're not underwater. You literally walk around the ship, can climb on ropes and sailing thingies (I'm horrible with boat parts terms, I apologize) and you can even go to other ships thanks to chains connecting the ships together! Nice!
Something funny from the second level is that you can launch Ristar from cannons.
And shoutout to Them.
The first level (which again, was cut from the American version) takes place above the clouds. You even get to use rainbows as bridges, that's actually really cute.

The first level also has plenty of beanstalks of sorts? Which you can use to climb.
Now let's talk about the boss! The boss in this planet is actually a cute little sleepy tapir! The game doesn't names them as far I'm aware, but doing a bit of research, I was given the name 'Insomnis'.
He has two attack patterns: throwing pillows at you and using a sucking attack to swallow Ristar. Also, if he gets hit, his little bat minion will turn the lights off and he will sleep and heal. Luckily, the bat isn't THAT strong, three hits is enough to defeat it.
Also, you can attack 'Insomnis' by throwing his pillows back at him. Or you could just do the grabby thing over and over, that also works. Doing that reveals the ship where the battle takes place at is apparently a sunken ship? Was 'Insomnis' manipulating reality around him?
Headcanons aka don’t play the game expecting to see the shit I’m gonna talk about here:
Terra is considering the 'forgotten Valdi planet', as it's a planet somewhat hard to visit. First of all, the planet rather cloudy in a regular basis. Also, Terra's orbit is the slowest out of all the planets in the Valdi system.
Terra is a planet that really values fantasy, adventure and dreams. Some people consider it the 'second most artistic planet' (the first being Sonata) because of how daydreamy the population is. Many of them like writing stories or drawing to let their imagination go wild or to journal their dreams.
The population are also very 'fantasy-like' (unicorns, centaurs, just to name a few). Many of them are also very fluffy and cloud like.
There is also a lot of the population which look like bugs. The main one being similar to pond skaters or water beetles.
Most of the population can fly. They either have wings (natural or artificial) or can fly via magic. Even if you can't fly, you can walk on clouds.
Speaking of magic, Terra is a very magic focused planet. Most magic is used to make flying and life in general easier for the population. There is also a lot of magic focused on sleeping and dreams - magic to help you sleep better, for lucid dreaming, etc. Terra is also the planet which created the Dream Dimension.
The Dream Dimension is a place where you can see and even interact with other people's dreams. The downside is that you can also do the same to their nightmares - although the nightmares are stored away in an area which is closed off. Somehow, small creatures named Sleepyheads - small colorful sheep-like creatures - were born here. Sleepyheads are harmless, though! All they do is eat strong emotions out of dreams (the worst that might happen is you might wake up startled).

The Planet Databases posts may be edited to include more headcanons as I remember or think about them. I'm mostly throwing the first shit I can remember just so it's not so empty rn
So the screenshots. The scores aren't always consistent because sometimes I just use the round select code to skip levels (with Scorch I was a lazy fuck didn't felt like playing that Simon says challenge LMAO). I'm mostly doing that to have visuals for the Databases because I'm a more visual person.

Planet Headcanons part. 3
The Deltarune news grabbed me by the throat and kept distracting me from posting here.
Anyways!
Planet Scorch, or Planet Onaclove in JP.
Canon level elements: Planet Scorch is where - in my opinion - the difficulty ramps up. The very start of the level throws meteors at you. You learn the enemies can control fire machines. There are lava rivers. There are bird enemies which will try to throw you into fire pits. Welcome to hell!!
To be fair, you can also control the fire levers, which is fun.
Get fried.
I realized there is something I haven't spoken much about, which I will need to mention here, so some context first.
So in the end of each first levels in the game, there is a 'mini challenge' of sorts, which varies level to level. In Flora, it's a mini boss. In Undertow, it's a set of enemies which are thrown at you by waves (literal waves of enemies lol). Sonata is a mini boss which is a rhythm game, Freon is also a mini boss, so on.
Planet Scorch's? It's a game of Simon Says.
It starts out easy, showing the number order, but you gotta do that two more times. Once with the numbers disappearing later, and once rather fast and no numbers to help you.
As somebody with a shitty memory, this challenge is a pain in the ass to me. It's usually THE part of the game I dread replaying.
The second stage, Under Factory, shows off the planet more industrail setting. Lots of pipies, places to fly or climb.... Oh, there's still plenty of fire, though! And enemies now have access to explosives.
Next up the boss, Adahan!
Probably not what you would think for a fire themed planet, but Adahan is a giant armadillo-like creature.
Every time he takes a hit, he will dig a hole and hide underground before he can strike again. He also has a jet pack of sorts.
Every few hits he will also throw you into this falling segment of sorts, where he is flying. He is definitely a challenge compared to previous bosses so far!
However, once you beat Adahan, he loses his Evil Power and his armor, and we get a plot twist:
Adahan is actually a tiny little armadillo.
He will still try to attack you, but his attacks now don't do any damage.
You also have to hit him even if he is a wittwe baby. Not cool, Ristar.

While a super hot planet already, Scorch especifically uses its machinery to control the heat. When Greedy took over the Valdi System, he also took control of the heat system in Scorch.
Scorch is also the first more technological planet we see (not as advanced as Automaton, but we will get here when he get here!). The most popular technology here, besides using industrial factory things, is steampunk-like. Insdustrial factories tend to be more pricey, while steampunk is more accessible and affordable.
The population of Scorch, if they look like animals, tend to look like mammals or bugs. It's also common for they to wear heat resistant armor and/or to be made of 'metal'. Some of them look shiny because of that.
I also no idea how to describe these thingies from the Factory level, but I imagine they're pretty popular as 'elevators':

Planet Headcanons part. 2
Had a bad day at work and need a distraction so... let's continue this train ride.
Today we will talk about Planet Undertow (or Planet Leatow in the Japanese version)
Canon level elements: Undertow is the infamous 'water level' of Ristar. When you first enter the level, it doesn't seems to be the case.... until you're forced to hit a wall, which causes the water level to increase, so now you have to swim. Oops!
The good news is that unlike his fellow Sega game protagonist, Sonic the Hedgehog, Ristar can't drown. He can just breathe underwater, apparently. So you won't have to deal with 'Oh god I need to find a bubble or I will drown!' anxiety.
This planet introduces the fact Ristar can swim in any directions. He can still use his stretch/hit attack, though. Now underwater, you will see some enemies based off sea animals: fishes, jellyfishes, eels, lobsters, you get the picture. You will also get to see the water level in this planet seems a little... weird. It rises, then lowers again. Sometimes you will be forced to walk on 'land' again, and you get to see the 'poor' fish enemies trying to get you, but not being able to walk or live on land. F in chat.
Now talking about the second level, Lost Palace. Remember when I said you can't drown in this game? If you COULD drown, this level would be a pain in the ass. Unlike the first level, this level is even more underwater than the previous one. The main gimmick is that you have to explore a 'maze' underwater palace, each room has something you need to do before you clear it.
Oh! A little fun fact, this level also has something to note. This level has a little 'enemy' which isn't present in the Japanese version: It's a little starfish guy who glues itself on you. Don't worry, that doesn't hurts you. It only makes it so Ristar can't jump high. Really, that's it. If you go back to the water or attack an enemy, the starfish falls down.
This little enemy inspired the creation of a Ristar Sibling, but I'll talk about him another time, shhh.
Back to Lost Palace, it's an interesting leve. Sometimes you have to fight enemies, sometimes there is a fan that tries to blow you to spikes and sometimes you have to fight Big Friends.
Big Friend!
The boss of this level is Oshat, a hammerhead shark. He is a little tricker compared to Riho. Not only sometimes he hides in the background of the level like a bastard, he can suddenly dash in to tackle you. He will also hit the pillars in the background to drop rocks at you, or even summon fish minions to help him.
Something to note about Oshat, he is probably the only boss in the game which doesn't changes colors to tell you how much health he has left. However, you can tell how much HP he has by looking at how much corks are covering the holes. You start the battle with four corks, so you have to hit Oshat four times.
Also, uncorking the holes will decrese the water level.

Undertow is naturally a planet full of water, but the population has worked out ways - either by magic or their own technology - to increase and decrease the water level as needed. In game, this was something Greedy and Oshat messed up with, as a mean to control the population and make their lives hell.
SPEAKING OF POPULATION, which a lot of people in Undertow are fishes or live underwater, there is also plenty of people who can live out of water. Everybody born in Undertow can breath underwater, though.
The population are either fishes or amphians. Aquatic mammals (otters, seals) do exist, but are more uncommon.
Most of the technological things in Undertow involve pipes and water. They tend to prefer to use magic or water (or both) to sort things out.
Flora is famous for their fruits, but Undertow is popular for meat related products, of course, I'm talking about fishes. Fishermen are pretty common in Undertow and they have a pretty cozy living. Sushi is also pretty popular.

Planet Headcanons part. 1
Okay, I figure this is a good place to start! Each post will talk about each planet, so I'm guessing it will be..... 6-8 posts. We'll see!
Today we will talk about the first planet of the game, Planet Flora (or Planet Neer in the Japanese version of the game).
Canon level elements: Planet Flora is the first planet in the game, and as such, the first two levels and then boss fight are on the easier side. The planet takes a plants/nature/forests aesthetic, and this is reflected on the enemies too, an enemy being based off a owl, another based off a bat/flying squirrel thing, and in the very start of the level there is this enemy who as a kid I was pretty sure was a bunny.
The level design also takes full advantage of the forest elements: tree branches, bushes with hidden things on it, dandelion-like thingies which you can grab on to float away... the second level even makes you drop down trees to continue your journey. The first level contains what could be considered a 'mini' boss in form of a big snake.
The second level, Dark Woods, also features a thing where the level suddenly gets dark every now and then, but you can make your way bright by hitting these glowing trees you run into. You can continue walking even while it's dark, but you can't deny it's hard to see where you are going.
The boss in this area is named Riho, implied to be the little enemy who takes control of this priest/elder character. This elder is actually seen in the start of the game, praying for help. The boss itself isn't TOO hard? You need to hit the possessed elder three times, which makes Riho fall down, then you tackle Riho. Tackle Riho three times, and you're done. Easy.

Naturally (hahahahaha) Planet Flora is the planet the most involved with nature and plants care. The population's access to technology is mostly tied with wood, stones and anything you can easily find in a forest. They also have the biggest amount of food production tied to fruits, vegetables and plants in general, making it one of the popular planets for the food economy.
Flora is also one of the more 'religious' planets, if not the most. They share a lot of stories about the Space Gods and many areas have altars for prayers. Because the goddess Oruto is the Space God living the closest to Flora, the religious inhabitants have a huge spot for her in particular, so she tends to be THE god people pray for when they need help.
Tied to the point above, Shooting Stars are very respected in Flora too, since they are children of Oruto.
While more humanoid inhabitants are common too, anthropomorphic animal-like inhabitants are also very much present. Most of these 'animals' resemble mammals or reptiles. The animal-like population in general also has night vision, so it's not unusual to see them living or working in the Dark Woods area.
Transportation varies from area to area. Most places encourage walking or using wooden wagons. The floating dandelions I mentioned above can be used for VERY short distances, since they're useful, but fragile. Some more windy areas also use leaf gliding.

I don't know how, but somehow my love for this little game from my childhood resulted on me wanting to expand on it, which I got carried away with and now I have so much stuff I feel like I gotta put it somewhere so even I don't lose track of shit.
