Hi there! So in private messages my friend tends to send me like 10 posts at once, and right now there is no option to reply to those messages individually. For example in messenger etc if you swipe right (or right click) you can immediately reply to that specific post/message. I was wondering if you guys had any plans on incorporating that or if you'd be willing to. Thanks in advance! 😘

Unfortunately, we don’t have any plans on adding that kind of functionality to direct messaging.

But’s it not all bad news—far from it. It sounds like what you’re doing could be much better served by Communities! Sharing posts with friends in a space where you can all comment on them is one of the reasons we’re building it, and we think it would suit you down to the ground. Like a glove, even.

One thing that I hate intensely about the dominant culture nowadays is how common it is for people to place strong social expectations on people to respond to messages (text, email, DM's, etc.) in a particular time-frame. Like there's this idea that if you respond too fast, you are creepy, desperate, or annoying, but if you respond too slowly you are uninterested, unreliable, disrespectful, etc. And being too fast and/or too slow can be seen as a sign of being socially awkward (read: neurodivergent and any negative stereotypes that come with it) or just not having your life together (like too slow means you are drowning and not on top of life, too fast means you have no friends or no life, etc.)

To me this whole pressure seems ridiculous.

Like it seems totally normal to me that sometimes you will happen to stumble on a message the moment it was sent, and have free time and motivation to respond right there, so an immediate reply is most natural. And other times you are busy and the message reaches you at an inopportune time, and maybe you also lose track of it and forget to reply for a really long time. And of course sometimes you're somewhere in between these two extremes. All scenarios are natural and fine.

And which of these scenarios happens is more dependent on random circumstances than on the importance of the matter in the message and how you feel about the person sending it.

I think life would be so much better if we just stopped assigning meaning to the rates at which people reply to specific messages. Allow people to sometimes reply instantly, or other times take a really long time to reply, without judgment. If it's really important, double or triple text. I won't judge.

And please, reach out to me how and whenever it feels natural to do so. Don't artificially delay or pressure yourself to hurry a reply in a way that doesn't feel natural. Human communication is meant to be varied in frequency and pace. We can have rich and healthy relationships without having all these unnecessary norms about this stuff. The norms aren't serving us. Let them go.

Thanks Amy 💖 I appreciate your advice, truly, but I spent like two hours on the phone with four different Apple Support personnel so that we could discover that my iCloud storage was all but full, so it prioritized downloading the iOS update (and photos and stuff). So any unsorted notes not already saved in the cloud are just gone.

My iCloud storage has been expanded, so that hopefully this never happens again, but I’m still extremely disheartened and demoralized by everything.

It also deleted all the fics I had downloaded. I just spent three hours or so redownloading them (and I’ll download all of my own fics too so I have a copy), and four more had been deleted since I downloaded them before. So those are fucking gone forever too.

All in all, this is one of my worst days in recent memory.
