❧ fireworks masterpost
❧ Summary: Atsumu had given up on the prospect of finding his soulmate years ago. He just wasn’t lucky like his friends, or so he thought. Because after an accidental meeting with a local painter, the volleyball player found himself entranced by someone who wants nothing to do with him.
❧ the soulmate principle: “The Soulmate Principle is the idea of two people being destined for each other at birth. These people are called soulmates. Soulmates will often instantly ‘recognize’ or be drawn to one another, even if they have never met. A soulmate couple are regarded as being ‘perfect’ for each other in every way. Usually, the soulmates provide each other with understanding, healing and strength. Soulmates are connected by a phenomena called the “silver cord,” or soulmate bond, which remains unbroken until death. It can be felt by a shock or a jolt of electricity when bare skin touches bare skin. Soulmates can also share emotions with each other through the bond.”
❧ warnings: verbal abuse, toxic af father, reader is exhibiting signs of mental illness, suicidal thoughts (nothing explicit), suggestions of suicide, mentions of physical illness, attending the hospital, mentions of cancer, mentions of injury.
❧ story format: written.
❧ word count: 3.2k
❧ part: three out of three | read part one here | read part two here |
❧ A/N: holy shit 500000 years later and it’s here! :( Sorry for the wait. also this is kinda dark!!?!?!? so be warned.
Tumblr media
It took a single glance in your soulmate’s direction to plant an entire garden inside of your chest. It took a single conversation to turn those seeds into perfect little sprouts. Hope had begun to nestle into your lungs, making it easier to process the air and to breathe. It should have remained that way. Perhaps an intelligent individual would have taken the blessing and returned home. Perhaps they would have decided to call their soulmate rather than knock upon the door leading to a troubled past.
If only you were intelligent, or wise, or anything along those lines. Because it appeared you had forgotten that his words have always been far more lethal than poison. And it is exactly his words that set ablaze the garden of newly sprouted flowers, leaving behind ashes and the same emptiness you were so damn accustomed to.
How strange that the person who was meant to protect you from harm, was the one always inflicting it.

Ten: Badtz-Maru x My Melody
Tumblr media
you smooth your palms over your outfit; today you chose to dress somewhat cute, opting to wear a black mini skirt with a dark grey baby-tee that had Sanrio characters on the front.
did you choose darker colours to wear in hopes of matching with Suna? perhaps. well, nobody else needed to know that but you.
with soft steps you make your way to his door, quickly touching your hair to ensure it was perfect before pressing the doorbell. you hold your breath, trying to look calm even if you feel a storm of emotions brewing inside. the door swings open, a gust of heat from the house enveloping your skin like a warm blanket. you look up, meeting deadpan eyes.
“Hi, ‘Taro!” you beam at him.
he squints his eyes at you, eyes analytical as his gaze drops before lifting. “Hey, Ms. Ditz,” he smirks, huffing out a small chuckle when you gawk at him.
you slip inside, getting a whiff of the soft earthy scent that emanates from Suna. “What kind of treatment is this for someone who is helping you make your favourite snack?” Suna rolls his eyes.
“Alright, so what should I call you?”
you grin, “How about baby?”
he pauses, looking at you emotionlessly.
“No? What about sweetheart, or my love, or.. if you wanna go slow, babe is okay too!” you lift your hand and give him a finger-heart, winking.
he turns his back, opening his fridge, “Did you want anything to drink or eat?”
“No, I’m okay, thanks.” you sulk, sad that he had no reaction to your flirting. in your gloom you miss the way he presses his lips together to stop himself from smiling.
you unzip your backpack, pulling out the ingredients one by one. you place them on the table, glancing at Suna who looks at the items with mild confusion. you giggle, “What?”
he walks over to you, your stomach lurching at the close proximity. he’s so pretty, long eyelashes and messy brown locks. his nose is sharp, and his lips are pink and smooth. is he wearing lip balm? you wonder what flavour it is.
he turns his head towards you, raising a brow, “Did you listen to a thing I said?”
your eyes widen. “Of course! You were talking about how… how you didn’t know there were so many ingredients.”
“No, I said I didn’t know it had such a small list of ingredients,” he exhales, staring at you with an exasperated look.
you feel bad, realizing you should have been listening, especially when you were merely a guest in his house. you smile, guilty, “Sorry, I got distracted by your pretty face. That was my bad.”
he presses his lips together before sighing once more. “It’s fine, just focus now.” you salute him to show how serious you are.
you move towards his stove and grab a small pot. Suna cautiously follows you, hovering behind you like a lost puppy as you walk towards the sink, turning the tap on to pour water inside.
“What are you doing? Explain it to me.” he demands softly.
you laugh, “I’m just filling it up with water first, then we boil it and then we can add the Agartine.”
he tilts his head, messy hair flipping onto the side, “Agar-what now?”
“Agartine.” you repeat, giggling to yourself at how cute he sounds.
you place the pot on the stove, before turning around. except you don’t realize where Suna was standing, until you are faced with his chest. you look up in surprise, pausing at the sight of him so… close. your eyes meet his hazel ones, observing the slight eyeliner he chose to wear. your heart jumps when you think about the fact that he wore makeup just to see you.
in your observing, you find an eyelash that had fallen onto his cheek. you lift your hand, gently cupping his face and swiping your thumb to remove the piece of hair.
you glance at his eyes, “Sorry, there was an eyelash.”
“…It’s fine.” he swallows harshly before softly grabbing your wrist and pulling your arm away. you watch as he walks back towards the ingredients, placing a hand on your chest as your heart thumps loudly. he truly made you feel such intense emotions.
in your stupor, you don’t notice Suna covering his face with a hand, nor the soft blush that coats his cheeks.
-
“aaaand it’s all done!” you clap your hands together happily.
Suna’s eyes sparkle, with more emotion you thought his irises could hold. “If only you looked at me that way,” you sigh dramatically. Suna ignores you as he picks up a jelly stick and places it in his mouth, chewing slowly.
“How does it taste?” you ponder, poking his cheek as you scan his face for any sort of reaction.
he straightens out his features, “It’s okay, I guess.”
you scoff, “Really now? Okay, guess I’ll just throw it out then.” you move to grab the tray of jelly sticks until he grabs your hands.
“Hey! Stop that. How could you throw away my chuupets so easily?” he grumbles, taking the tray away from you and placing it on the counter.
you smirk, “That’s what I thought, ‘Taro. You don’t wanna test me.”
he side-eyes you at your words, raising a brow at the lack of fear he feels. you glower at his unimpressed face, “Listen, fool. I could beat you up any day.” you roll up your sleeve, flexing your arm to show your muscle- or lack thereof.
Suna takes once look at your arm and turns his face to the side. you’re about to question him until you notice his shoulders subtly shaking and his hand covering his mouth.
is he - is he laughing?
“Excuse me?!” you screech, completely and utterly offended at his reaction. he continues to laugh, and removes his hand at your voice. he turns around, chuckling without remorse as you stand there, baffled.
his lips have stretched out to a pretty grin, “Shiver me timbers,” he teases, causing you to lightly punch his chest as he smiles down at you. you flush at the serene look on his face, but the moment is interrupted when the front door opens.
the two of you snap your heads to the side, Suna taking a step back as the carefree smile fades from his face.
“Oh, Rintarou. I didn’t know you brought a friend over.” his mother speaks, placing her keys in a round blue bowl.
you wait for Rintarou to introduce you, but it doesn’t seem like he will. you decide to take it into your own hands. you bow your head in a greeting, “Hello Mrs. Suna. It’s nice to meet you, I’m [Name].”
“Nice to meet you, dear,” she smiles sweetly at you. you find her to be one of the prettiest mothers you’ve seen yet. with eyes just like Rintarou’s and dimples to match, you find yourself stumped at the beauty of the Suna family.
Rintarou stands off to the side, seemingly uncomfortable. you glance outside and notice how dark it has gotten, realizing you should leave by now. you look over at him, “I think I’m gonna head out now.”
he nods, moving to grab a jacket and his keys as you stand there, confused. he frowns at your expression, “I’m not letting you walk to the stafion alone at this time. C’mon, let’s go.”
your heart stutters at the sweet gesture. you quickly zip up your backpack and throw on your jacket before giving a soft goodbye to his mother. you follow Suna out of the house soon after, finding yourself satiated and happy.
Suna looks at the grin on your face, “What are you so happy about?”
you stare at him, eyes twinkling, “Just thought about how today was fun.” you tug on his sweater gently, looking up at him through your lashes, “Let’s hang out again sometime, okay?”
Suna merely gazes at you in response, but you figure it’s better than an immediate rejection. you arrive at the station soon enough, and your heart feels heavy when you realize you will now have to part with Rintarou.
you give him a soft smile, “Okay, I’ll see you around, ‘Taro!”
he looks down at you, hesitating before lifting his hand and placing it on your head. he ruffles your hair gently, “Bye. Text me when you get home.”
your chest warms at his words as you nod happily.
-
Suna walks back home with countless thoughts swirling in his head; one is prominent, however. he found that he was slowly warming up to you, his frozen heart beginning to thaw out and leave himself bloody and raw.
he wasn’t sure if you would be able to handle the massacre that existed within him; in fact, he wasn’t sure if he could handle it all the same. all he knew was that you were a risk.
he continues his walk, glancing up at the sky.
were you a risk worth taking?

❧  A/N: Sooo what are we feeling so far, ya'll!
Tumblr media
"The weather keeps on getting worse, huh?"
Concern had the black-haired male's mouth twitching into a partial frown. Above him, strokes of light animated the sky in a battle that had even frightened away the stars. The sounds of the aerial conflict was startling too - to say the least. The rumbling was enough to mimic a minor earthquake, which was why Kuroo was considering abandoning his plans for the night. A single kilometre remained on his journey, but the streets were now flooding and his desire to attend a party in soaked clothes was close to 0.
For a moment, he had to wonder, just who angered the Gods above? As this was perhaps the worst storm he had witnessed in his entire lifetime. Okay, 25 years may not seem much to most - but it's two decades and a half!
After exhaling an elongated breath, he managed to convince himself to continue a bit longer. Kenma seemed to desire his presence, and there was also Koutarou who had almost separation anxiety. The thought had him chuckling lowly to himself. And as for his clothes, someone would lend him something, right?
Eh, that was a problem for when he actually arrived.
The pathway to classroom H9 was mostly deserted, although he did pass by a few stragglers rushing to find shelter. The scowls on their faces and the curses uttered under their breath had Kuroo shaking his head with a faint smile.
The rain appeared to be the primary adversary for the students of Sacred Arms Academy today.
Well, except for one.
A lone occupant could be observed on the bench ahead, sitting with her head against the backrest. What stunned Kuroo was that she was simply accepting the disastrous climate. From his current vantage point, he could not make out whether or not her eyes were open. However, he could see clearly that her face was taking most of the brute force of the rain.
The scene resembled a painting; one that would cause viewers to pause and ponder what exactly happened to the subject of the work. Was she heartbroken? Was she lost? Or was she purely insane? Or was it something beyond the average person's comprehension?
Before Kuroo's mind could catch up to his feet, he was already moving towards you. Whether it was sympathy or the pull of curiosity, he did not know. And as he proceeded closer, a strange thought occurred to him - was she hiding her tears in the rain?
The identity of the person only registered when he was stood right beside you. Mikage Y/N. Reo's older sister. The one the younger male was worried about.
Upon closer examination, it was easy to determine that you were outside for at least 15 minutes. Not an inch of your face or body was spared from the wrath of the harsh weather. Mascara was smudged on the corner of your eyes, and yet you still somehow looked breathtaking. Truly a worthy subject for a piece of art.
"I'm pretty sure you're supposed to use an umbrella when it rains." Kuroo shifted the umbrella within his grasp as he leaned in, it was large enough to cover you both to a degree. But he was content with getting a bit of rain on himself now. Perhaps, you inspired him just a bit.
Your heavy eyelids flutter open when you hear the unfamiliar male's voice. If you were in a different mental state, you probably would have been startled to see a handsome man peer down at you. But after enduring your father's latest lesson, you were defeated and desired nothing more than to drown in the rain devastating the city.
"I didn't ask for your kindness." Your attention lazily flickers to the umbrella now sheltering you before returning to the man ahead. He's staring so intently with curiosity twinkling in his irisies. And all you can do is return his interest with an empty glare.
"There are some things you don't have to ask for." Although he was hesitant for a second, a playful smile tugged at the end of his mouth. "And I'd be a pretty big asshole to ignore a stray cat without an umbrella." He had prayed silently that his teasing remark would at least earn him a smile. Or even a crack in your cold facade.
Oh, he was surely mistaken.
"I'm not an animal that needs saving." To catch the male off guard, you lifted yourself from the bench suddenly, causing him to stumble a step back. Surprise morphed instantly into amusement as he took in your unusual stance. "And let me give you a warning, since you clearly need it. Unnecessary kindness can kill. You're going to school with cutthroat assholes, you might as well learn to behave like one too."
Despite the pellets of liquid colliding with your body, you crossed your arms over your chest protectively. Sure, you probably came across as a lunatic. But it was better that way. Nothing in this life came free. Everything came packaged with expensive price tags, and you were exhausted from continuously paying the price.
"Anyway. Please stop looking at me like that. I also didn't ask for your pity, and I don't deserve it either." Pressing your teeth together, tension formed along your jawline.
Just why was this man so interested in you? Why had he not left yet? Why was he still standing there, watching you with those damn eyes?
"I'm not sure what you're talking about and why you're so angry. But accepting help in a shitty moment isn't a bad thing. It doesn't make you weak." Honestly, Kuroo had no standing to attempt to reason with you. Yet he found himself rooted in his spot and overcome with a desire to comfort you. It probably had to do with the moment earlier, when you secured gazes. He had never come across someone with eyes that displayed true and unadulterated sorrow. And while he knew virtually nothing about you, his chest was overcome with heartache.
No one should have to suffer that much.
"I didn't ask to be taught a lesson. I've had quite enough of those. And I understand the world well enough." Why were needless words spilling from your lips easily to a stranger? Even that question puzzled you. Did you not just spend an entire week avoiding conversation with your colleagues?
The only reasonable possibility was that your father's manipulation had commenced its reign over your mind. His desire - no.
His instructions were for you to become a socialite, one that everyone envied but no one was able to touch. A lethal individual truly, one that every man knew to remain clear of. It had appeared your two-minute conversation with the gamer had reached your father's ears, and he was rather displeased. That was why much of his lecture focused on how a lady is to behave around men.
And the person in front of you was certainly a man, and an incredibly attractive one. Not that it mattered.
Right now, you appeared as a damsel in distress. When in reality, this was a form of suffering you had chosen.
"So, I'd suggest that you go on your way and stop looking for people to save. Because clearly your hero radar is broken." This was the final thought you had selected to vocalize. It was enough to repel any ordinary person. Who would want to waste their time on an ungrateful bitch?
Right?
"Wow, my hero radar." A hand was sent to his chest to feign hurt from the strange insult. However, by this point, your back was turned towards him and you were already starting to walk away from the scene. It was peculiar just how confident your strides were despite the fact you were undoubtedly soaked and shivering.
Internally, the voice of rationality suggested that he leave you alone from now on. But it was the other voice that was much more convincing.
For some bizarre reason, he felt compelled to seek you out again. And based on the whispers in the hallways, he knew exactly how to make your paths cross again.

Tumblr media
❧ 2. Indestructible
❧ Masterlist - Previous - Next
❧ A/N: written portion below!
Tumblr media
It's all too suffocating. The expectations, the micromanaging, and of course, the eyes that never stop analyzing your every decision. Whether you choose to extend a sigh only a mere second longer, or whether you choose to wear your favourite sweater twice in a row. Everything is observed and critiqued.
And sometimes, it's just far too much.
Even the mirror cannot provide you with a safe space. The fluorescent lighting is far too cruel for your liking, highlighting every imperfection that you really wish to pay no mind to. Yet, beyond the imperfections, it's the eyes that captivate even your own interest. A shell of a person stares back at you, yet the eyes... They carry a heaviness that would startle most, and would haunt others.
They tell a story about a marionette whose entire life consisted of obeying the wishes of others. The invisible strings that were embedded into the limbs of the marionette, lifted her up and helped her continue the play.
No matter how disastrous the storm inside of her soul was, she had no choice. The show must always go on.
"Y/n? Are you okay?"
The voice disturbs your inner monologue, yet it does not frighten you; nor does it trigger any negative emotions. Instead, a small smile claims the corners of your mouth as you take in the presence of your younger brother.
"I'm okay, Reo. I just needed to use the bathroom." Instinctively, you reached out and provided a gentle pat to his cheek, earning you an inquisitive blink in response. It was clear that your words did not provide him with the reassurance he craved.
"You don't have to hide things from me." The purple-haired boy stated this as if it were a universal fact; one that was not open to debate. "I'm only a year younger than you. I can help protect you too."
The latter part comes out more in a childish grumble; one that warms up the ice that was claiming the surface area of your chest.
"Oh, is my younger brother now a knight in shining armour?" Lifting up your brow, you tapped a finger against your bottom lip with a sincere smile now itching to grow. "Or is it, a knight in shining Armani?"
"I think Armani." Another party joined the conversation with a whimsical laugh. It's a sound that brings a wave of tranquillity, so you more than welcome it. "He's too weak to carry armour."
"Right, anyone would appear weak in comparison to you, Oikawa." The younger boy showcased a charming smile, but the irritation underlying his words was clear.
The chestnut-haired male blew out another laugh before snaking an arm around your middle. The fluidity of his movements did not catch you off guard. This was all merely part of the performance. And the two of you, were no doubt, the best performers.
"Oh, you're so kind, little Reo. Maybe I should repay that kindness by teaching you how to work out?" After slowly leading your back to collide with his chest, Oikawa leaned down to whisper into your ear. "Unless Miss Y/N has an issue with that?"
Ahead of you, Reo narrowed his eyelids the slightest, while the emotion drained from his face. He knew that you and Oikawa were simply pawns on the chessboard. It was not as though you both had the luxury of free will. Yet, it bothered him how easily Oikawa could play the aloof asshole.
Nothing belonged to Reo. Not even his own body. Every part of his life was calculated from birth. The only reason he had the slightest bit of sanity was you. His older sister. The one who bore the punishments that would come if he made any errors. And the one who sheltered him from knowing the true torment that came with being a Mikage.
So, the fact that Oikawa Tooru could make light of Reo's physical state... It upset him. Especially, knowing that the only reason he was not completely skin and bones was because his sister would sneak him in food.
"You should consider training yourself a bit more, before giving out advice, my sweet Tooru." Sensing Reo's discomfort, this was the only response you could offer. Beside you, a pout settled onto Oikawa's mouth, and you were unable to ascertain whether he was genuinely upset.
"What's going on here? Are my three favourite people fighting?" The last individual to enter the conversation had your stomach in knots. Your mind was prepared for the mental warfare, yet your stomach raged with a dozen emotions. The muscles of your body, responding to the havoc ensuing inside of your stomach, also strained under the pressure of his gaze. Oikawa must have felt your sudden change in demeanour, as his grip around you tightened.
"No, father. We are not fighting. Please do not misunderstand." Over time, you had perfected a low and velvety tone. It was one that contained an essence that was both docile yet refined. In ways, it served as a defensive weapon. One that had saved you and Reo on countless occasions.
"Yes. I sincerely apologize if it seemed that way, Mr. Mikage." Oikawa matched your facade, yet stated his words with a royal-like confidence. It was a simpler task for him, as he was not afraid of your father, but his own.
"Well, alright. If there are no issues, let us all return to our table, hm?" The grey-haired male pressed his lips together into a faint smile, before motioning forward with a short and calculated hand gesture. "And Reo, be sure to stop by my office when we return home."
****
The shedding of blood commenced almost 15 minutes after the family returned home. The ominous comment issued towards your brother had you on high alert throughout the car ride. Reo did not utter a single word, instead his attention was fixed on the tiny droplets of rain sticking against the glass. Your parents, on the other hand, were speaking freely with each other about how delightful the banquet was. The Kise family hosted the banquet to express their gratitude towards the Mikages. They were another family who were "saved", without truly realizing that their saviours had more than a few skeletons in their closet. Under the Mikage dynasty was a blood-run river, one that exchanged souls for wealth.
Oh, it was also the banquet that caused you to delay your enrollment into Sacred Arms Academy. Not that it mattered now.
When the four of you entered the shared residence, you prayed your father had forgotten about his request. Ten minutes slipped on by, and he did not call out for Reo. Usually, if your father was to administer a punishment, it would happen immediately. So, you accordingly thought that it would be safe enough to at least take five minutes to change your clothes.
Only halfway into changing into a sweater, the sound of glass shattering brings your heart to sink into the pit of your stomach. Almost on autopilot, you quickly slip your arms into the sleeves and begin down the long staircase. For approximately 20 seconds, silence consumes the house. And it's once you reach the bottom of the staircase, do you hear your father's loud voice boom through the space.
"You dare disrespect the Mikage name? You dare?!"
Panic ignites inside of your muscles as you proceed closer to the study room. Based on your experience, rushing in could make the matter worse. However, standing there - in safety - while your brother was forced to endure abuse was also not an option.
"You are no longer at the weight you were assigned. Two pounds. You gained two pounds! It was enough for the Oikawa boy to even notice!"
How in the world could Tooru's comment be construed as a comment on weight gain? Honestly, your father's lack of critical reasoning was beyond your comprehension. The truth was, the old man was always looking for excuses to harm his children. It was not about the perfect image; it was about keeping them within his grasp. He craved complete and utter control, but he could never fully obtain it. Because he was not God. And you two were not his puppets. There was no way for him to completely strip you both of your individuality. And he hated you for it.
"I... I'm sorry..." This time it was Reo's gentle voice that cut through the air and pierced your heart. "I'll make sure to lose it..."
Oh, Reo. Your sweet, innocent Reo. It wasn't fair. None of this was. But soon, you'd be leaving him to fight for himself. And you knew deep inside, that you couldn't.
You absolutely could not do it.
"He won't be losing anything." Upon entering the study space, your eyes instantly searched for your younger brother. It only took a few seconds to find the purple-haired boy, on the floor with a superficial cut decorating his cheek. When you had heard the glass shatter, you had incorrectly assumed it was aimed at the wall. Now, that you were inside the room, you could see the impact was right beside Reo. "You threw a glass at him?"
Terror gripped your throat as you stared at the younger boy. But the pure dread animating his irises devastated you in a way it had never before.
"You... This is enough." Perhaps it was time for the bricks to break from the pressure of the well. And maybe that was the reason for the steaming liquid running down your cheeks. "We're not playing your stupid little game anymore. Do you understand, father!?"
Senior Mikage took a cautious step back upon hearing your words. He reasoned to himself that he had no reason to fear you and yet, this was a new reaction he had elicited. He was unsure just how far you would now take this.
"What insolence... What -"
"No. You do not get to curse us anymore. You will not lay a hand on us. Do you understand?" Adrenaline had you practically bouncing on the spot. Even if your father were to strike you now, you doubt you would feel it until tomorrow. All you could do was continue your proclamations and pray your father would not lift his hand again.
"In fact, you'll be enrolling Reo into the academy with me. And we'll both be leaving tomorrow. You will no longer have the privilege of living with your children. Do you understand me!?"
The only reason Reo was not joining you in the first place was due to your father's needless meddling. The two requirements for the academy were an undergraduate degree and a recommendation from a family of wealth. Those were two items within Reo's grasp, the only issue was your father.
"What... How dare you -" The older male could not process what was occurring at a reasonable pace. He had become far too comfortable in his artificial reality that he forgot that his children could choose to defy him. Once the varying forms of abuse were no longer effective, what was he to do? What was his plan?
Well, there was no plan. And that was why you were able to use the circumstances to your advantage.
"Come here, Reo." After wiping away the tears with the sleeve of your sweater, you curled your fingers into your palm to motion the younger boy forward. Although he was hesitant, Reo mustered the limited energy left in his body and removed himself from the floor. "This is the last night we'll ever stay in this haunted house. We're going to finally be free."
Once Reo was within arms reach, you took his hand in yours and without sparing your father a glance, exited the study space. To your dismay, you almost strolled straight into your mother who was clearly listening to everything from the foyer. Upon seeing her children, the older woman exhaled a breath while crossing her arms over her chest. Her behaviour did not coincide with that of a worried mother. Instead, she appeared disappointed, and that fact alone had the acids inside of your stomach churning in revulsion.
A mother who could bring herself to care for her own children was no mother at all.
"We'll clean up your wound first, Reo. Then we'll start packing." Your intentions were purposefully stated, to serve as a warning to both your mother and father. If either of them were to intervene, you were not completely sure what you would do. But the adrenaline soothed your concerns, whispering little lies about your indestructible state.
For now, pretending would be enough. But starting tomorrow, you'll commence your journey into discovering how to become more than skin and bones.
