Iolasus anon here and omg just wanted to say you made my day 😭🩷 I had been trying to search for that fic for so long it’s one of my favorites!! Do u happen to have any fic recs similar to it? Thank u so much hope ur day is good and also that ur pillow is always cold 🫶
Hi Anon! I'm so happy I was able to help; it's a gorgeous fic, and everyone should read it :D I'm not sure which aspect of the story you're referring to specifically (i.e. being similar to Iolaus), but here are some recs featuring internalized homophobia: April by nextraordinaire In the sharp, unforgiving plains of the Canadian Arctic, Erik is since long adapted to solitude and silence. Separated from civilization, dedicated to nothing but his research, he has formed a life that suits him. There is nothing he would ever want to change. So, naturally, the arrival of grad student Charles Xavier upends everything Erik ever thought he wanted, for better or for worse.
Definitions of Love by TurtleTotem
Erik says he loves Charles like a brother. There is nothing, he insists, inappropriate about the way they interact.
Pride & Prejudice - Rip it from my hands
“Say you forgive me,” Erik whispered, his breath warm against the skin of Charles’ neck.
Charles stood quietly by the window, looking past their reflections out into the yard.
“You made your feelings quite clear,” he said, stepping away from Erik.
Erik grasped his wrist hard, refusing to let Charles walk away.
“Please.”
The Butcher of Lowtown; a Tale from the Early History of Adaptives by Pookaseraph
Erik Lehnsherr has been on the trail of Herr Doktor Klaus Schmidt his entire adult life. He thinks he has finally found a lead in the person of one Doctor Charles Xavier: man of business and science, airship mogul, and expert on the adaptives who have started to proliferate in the last few dozen years. What he never expected was to find Dr. Xavier is also a philanthropist and a mutant. Together they must confront Erik's past and also face whatever emotional entanglement has started to form between him and the good Doctor.
Photographs and Memories by tirsynni
When war-battered Erik Lehnsherr met Charles Xavier, the man kneeling in the dirt and whispering to a lost refugee child, Erik feared his days of running from his deviance was done.
Heller Als Tausend Sonnen by Cylin
The title translates to 'Brighter Than A Thousand Suns'. Erik has a tin box no bigger than a shoe box with all that he holds dear and simultaneously hates with a passion. He keeps his passport in there, the coin, his knife, which he brought back from Argentina, his gun, a piece of blue and white striped fabric wrapped around a lock of hair – Magda, he thinks and his heart aches – and on the bottom, underneath a much thumbed postcard of Lady Liberty, tucked away from prying eyes and fingers, lies a yellow star with a pink triangle sewn over it.
If It's Cloudy or Bright by pearl_o
It's too late to write back now, Erik thinks. Not after all this time.
But he would--he would like to see Charles again, he thinks.
----- This one is more period typical homophobia than internalized homophobia but gorgeous and deserves to be devoured:
By Faint Indirections by kianspo (series)
Erik is in his ~50s, and lonely and bitter. He survived the Holocaust and was only ~14 when the war ended; and even ~40 years later, living in a country that helped to end WW2 and the Third Reich, homosexuality is still a taboo topic. Then one day, he stumbles over Charles, who is young(early 20s) and bright and smart and cheeky and full of energy and beautiful. And moving in the same street where Erik lives.
---- And I just rec'ced these but they're awesome and definitely deserve to be on this list!
to put the world between us by populuxe
Erik Lehnsherr is one of the hottest actors in Hollywood: fresh off an Academy Award nomination, he’s about to star in HBO’s most anticipated show of the year. And even though online chatter about his recent string of queer roles keeps getting louder, his personal life remains personal—just as it always has, and just as his manager and publicist continue to advise.
But when he winds up at the same wedding as his college best friend, Charles Xavier—and when they quickly fall into bed together—he’s forced to revisit the past he’s been trying to get away from for years. The pull between them has always been magnetic, but so has the weight of secrecy. Can they keep from repeating the same mistakes, or will the price of the truth be too high?
Iolaus by clarasteam
He calls Erik my friend and the words resonate with a meaning only Charles can hear. There’s a dangerous pleasure in it, that hidden meaning he longs to be able to share with Erik. Maybe one day, or one night, he’ll find a way to tell him. But time is running out and he hasn’t done it yet.
