i like eursulon's theme of consequences he couldn't have possibly predicted. he accepts kindness from his new friends and it gets him wayshadowed. he turns down the sword of night and a dead man is forced to take up a fight he has no part in. he begs for a favor in a moment of desperation and the sea must march against the people it loves so, so much. i think it's an interesting inversion of his more obvious theme. with freedom to play and chase as you will comes the freedom to make mistakes, both small and world-shattering.

Something I wish more people understood is that optimism and kindness are a choice.

For some people that choice comes more naturally than others. In some situations that choice is easier to make. But even if you're naturally inclined to be kind and optimistic, there will be times when it's a real struggle to not just wallow in the misery, or to be a petty ass gremlin to someone. When it takes real effort to not just take the easy option, because you know it will not help, or will even make stuff worse in the long run.

On the flip side for those who it doesn't come naturally, who really need to work on it, they still can and often do choose both kindness and optimism. Because no matter the difficulty level, it improves your overall quality of life and that of those around you.

Also, choosing kindness is not faking things. If you do kind things you are a kind person, whether you have to actively chose it or not. There is no difference to those you were kind to whether or not you had to think about the action, or if it just happened automatically. You still treated them kindly, and that is what they'll remember. It will mean more than you might think.

The good news is that it's a muscle you can train. The more you forge those pathways in your brain, the easier they are to walk. Where one day you may find that while you may never be a fully natural optimistic kind person, you can pretty well imitate one, and that's all that matters.

Kindness and optimism are a choice and you always get to choose it.

This scene, to my experience as a trans girl who would date a boy, is giving bonding over the shackles of masculinity and the shame and self-hate that often comes when you dont want to go along with the scripts forced upon you when you are a boy (or in rumi/my case, grew up with those scripts and are now not bound by them but still feel the scars from them)

Hot take but men have feelings, so many feelings, just as many as women do. However, under traditional expectations of masculinity they are pushed down, repressed until they are sublimated into the only expressions that are acceptable by society (pretty much just rage and shame).

And for Rumi/Me, you’ve done your transition, you’re living your life, shining like you were born to be, but no matter how far you get from your past the marks, the patterns, remain. Gwi-Ma’s voice in your head comes back, telling you you’re a liar, you’re a fake, and everyone is gonna find out and hate you just like they hate them. You’re never gonna escape this part of yourself, because you were born this way, born wrong, a mistake.

And wouldn’t it be nice to be seen by someone who knows what it’s like, and tells you that you’re not?
