Just some dark gods and eldritch horrors from goddamn Mario games of all things.

I'm feeling nostalgic for Final Fantasy V.

Like this is basically an affectionate parody of Final Fantasy and so doesn't take itself too seriously (until it does). The heroes chosen by fate are a hobo, a runaway princess with Chronic Self-Sacrifice Syndrome, an amnesiac grandpa who fell to earth on a meteorite, and a crossdressing pirate who can very easily be read as transmasc or non-binary and is also Best Character. Part of the plot where our heroes try convincing world leaders to stop overexploiting the magic Crystals because of ensuing climate crises is especially relevant today. The Job System is awesome, and every character has unique sprite outfits for each job. It's like if Final Fantasy and The Neverending Story combined, minus the latter's meta aspects.

The characters having pronounced bonds with their chocobo and dragon companions is so sweet and at times heartbreaking. There's no romantic subplot; in fact, there's a greater focus on family and friends (Bartz only seems interested in Faris when she's perceived as feminine but she's not into him and is like "nah fuck you" when Galuf tells her to act more ladylike). The villain is a tree that absorbed so much evil that it became a bombastic hammy warlock hellbent on destroying all of creation.

FFV also brought us Gilgamesh (the character) and the FUCKING TONBERRIES. Go figure the most easygoing entry in the mainline series unleashed those terrors upon us all.

And when people ask the old "Why didn't anyone use a Phoenix Down on Aerith?" show them FFV. They tried Phoenix Downs; they tried everything; nothing worked.

It's a silly game, and I'm glad for the Pixel Remaster release, but I think it deserves a 3D remake that not only does it justice but makes it even more fun. Give me fully voice acted 3D models of these idiots engaging in chaos.

This dialogue between Yelena and Alexei was dangerously relatable

Alexei: Stop. Stop it. We have all things that we regret

Yelena: No but l have so many. My first test at the red room. Anya, she was just a child. She was so small.

Alexei: So where you. I know, there were dark times. Very very dark times but. Before you were such a special little girl. Did you know this? You walked into a room, you made it brighter. You felt a lot of joy.

Yelena: l don’t remember that
