I feel like I should mention that the purge movies also very much support this idea, noone really wanted to kill each other at first apart from a few nutjobs and murder tourists who came specifically for the purge, most people just wanted to be left alone or maybe stole some stuff, the purge was gonna be a huge flop until the government sent in a private army to start murdering people and cause chaos.

My beef with the premise behind "The Purge" is that it's not laws stopping people from killing each other in the streets - it's kinda just the default human experience to not want to hurt anyone. We succeeded as a species because we're generally decent at getting along with each other. The average, well-adjusted human has no desire to inflict undeserved harm.

We do, however, hate rules, so we'd probably still get a little wild in less harmful ways.

When I started reading this lovely series at around 9.5 years of age, I was oddly struck with the fervent desire to ship the two bloody main characters. Safe to say, the majority of the fandom actually despises the ship. But I love the fandom, and want to offer this olive branch. Guys, when I say I ship Valduggery I just wanna clarify it’s platonic.

As platonic as best friends who will kill and die and live for each other gets, as platonic as literal soulmates who will not ever have their needs fulfilled by anyone else’s love and company more.

As platonic as partners who will count on one another, and with great ferocity they find each other, save each other and will practically sew their hips to stay side by side until the world itself crumbles to nothingness.

I don’t know entirely where this was headed but its getting suspiciously romantic. But it’s not guys, really. They shouldn’t date. God, no.

They’re just endgame in the sense that if they are forced to watch the world end, they would be substantially comforted if they could die in each other’s embrace.

As a side tangent, I’m getting to reading Phase 2 of this series for the first time, I love that we’re exploring the trauma Valkyrie is having to work through as a soldier post-almost apocalyptic war. I wonder how long it took Skulduggery to overcome his own trauma, he’s not 100% I know his redemption is still pending but it’s not crippling his ability to function as it is currently is for Valkyrie. She’s so strong, she needs to know, and Skul is so awesome at reminding her.

not even JRR Tolkien, who famously developed the concept of the Secondary World and firmly believed that no trace of the Real World should be evoked in the fictional world, was able to remove potatoes from his literature. this is a man who developed whole languages and mythologies for his literary world, who justified its existence in English as a translation* simply because he was so miffed he couldn't get away with making the story fully alien to the real world. and not even he, in extremis, was so cruel as to deny his characters the heavenly potato. could not even conceive a universe devoid of the potato. such is its impact. everyone please take a moment to say thank you to South Americans for developing and cultivating one of earth's finest vegetables. the potato IS all that. literally world-changing food. bless.

Wrong! Things can be slightly or unsightly which means things generally look good.

the default way for things to taste is good. we know this because "tasty" means something tastes good. conversely, from the words "smelly" and "noisy" we can conclude that the default way for things to smell and sound is bad. interestingly there are no corresponding adjectives for the senses of sight and touch. the inescapable conclusion is that the most ordinary object possible is invisible and intangible, produces a hideous cacophony, smells terrible, but tastes delicious. and yet this description matches no object or phenomenon known to science or human experience. so what the fuck

Hi Tumblr! I'm Stephanie, I'm writing a LGBTQ+ fantasy Ya book currently called Tainted by the Void!

It's about a girl named Varyn, who can access the void, letting her effectively short-range teleport and store things behind reality, who was taken from her old life and indoctrinated into a cult, where she finds herself working for the wrong side of history.

She will have to figure out what she wants to fight for, who her real friends are and what her powers mean for her life.

Many people and cosmic forces have a vested interest in her and she doesn't know which path will be right for her.

There are of course many other characters to meet over the course of the story, such as Varyns eventual live intrest Alenia, who's viewpoint we also get to see in the book from time to time.

Alenia is a tall, strong, but quite femme girl who, after her village was raided as a kid, found refuge with her late father's band of monster hunters, where she learned how to fight and gained a healthy distaste for authority.
