the bar was unusually empty, not that emmeline was complaining; it was nice to have a peaceful night out every once and a while, especially considering how hectic work had been. em curled tighter on her side of the booth as she readjusted the sketch pad resting on her knees, her purse rustling against her shoes from the movement. absorbed in the lines of the picture, em almost didn't notice when someone approaches. she doesn't even glance up as she spoke, "free seats everywhere. did you need something?"

pragmatic, level headed, and composed. those are the traits often attributed to emmeline. because she doesn't show emotions in an obvious way, those traits are often misconstrued as her being heartless. in actuality, however, emmeline is quietly compassionate and passionate about those in which she cares for. she also has a strong sense of justice that can translate into self righteousness without the proper checks and balances. her moral superiority also feeds into her pride.

B A C K G R O U N D

it came as a shock to many when anson vance, renowned pureblood extremist, married the halfblood, laurel callaghan. some thought he married below his station, others believed she settled. but the simple truth of it was that two people, from different backgrounds and with opposing personalities, got caught up in a whirlwind romance and fell in love. it was actually beautiful while that love lasted.

laurel gave birth to their first child soon after their nuptials. a few years later, emmeline was born, and it was around that time that their marriage had started to disintegrate. they argued more, fought more. eventually those fights escalated into physical altercations, courtesy of anson.

so it wasn't that surprising when the target of that violence shifted towards their children as well. a backhanded slap when emmeline got too mouthy. a hand tangled in her hair while her father screamed in her face. when she was shoved to the floor in the middle of an argument. the only solace to be found in those cold halls were emmeline's mother, older sibling, and her eventual younger sibling.

and then she got her letter and almost everything changed.

being at hogwarts felt like a haven. while the school wasn't a hundred percent safe, she could walk down the halls without dread settling into her stomach or constantly looking over her shoulder. she found peace, to a degree, despite that familiar sickening feeling she'd get whenever a letter came from home.

it was off and on like that for a few years. being at home vs being at school. em would always rationalize that she only had to make it through a few months before she would be back at her safe space, and soon her younger sibling would be there as well. but eventually, during her fourth year, things boiled over. anson and laurel had gotten into the worst fight they'd ever had; anson had gotten violent. and emmeline…she got in his way.

it wasn't like she hadn't been hit by her father before, but this time was different. she was no longer a little girl nor was she completely defenseless. she pulled out her wand and pointed it at him, the threat clear. maybe he was too shocked to respond or maybe it truly became clear to him what he had done to his family. whatever the reason, he backed off and left the room.

the next day, laurel and the kids moved in with her parents. she filed for divorce soon after. she'll never say, but it was that moment that em realized what she wanted to do. she wanted to protect people, to be an auror.

about five years after her mother got divorced, laurel remarried the sweetest wizard. emmeline gained a few step siblings from their marriage.

despite her career choice, as a child, she wanted to be a magizoologist. there was always a soft spot in her heart for animals, so she figured being in a career that involved them was the right fit. considering her disinterest in the biology aspect of it, however, it's for the best that it never happened. that doesn't stop her from volunteering at muggle animal shelters when she has some free time.

her best hogwarts subjects in school were flying and charms. her worst was potions and herbology.

she hasn't had contact with her father since the divorce. letters get immediately burned, should they come.

she enjoys sketching and painting; her apartment is filled with artwork.

she is a very bubbly and talkative drunk, much to her embarrassment. it is the biggest reason she doesn't drink. often.

THE BEST FRIENDS

CHAOS ENABLER: these two are very different. they are the reckless to emmeline's cautious, the energetic to her calm, etc. and so and so forth. they force her to push boundaries, and she keeps them steady. they've been best friends for years. (2/2: alice travers & otto bagman)

BIRDS OF A FEATHER: her other best friend is similar in temperament. they enjoy similar things. while they obviously have their differences as well, the two are mirror image of each other. (0/1)

THE RIVAL: ever since their hogwarts years, these two have been at odds with each other. whether it was with their class marks, on the quidditch field, or over the more mundane and petty, they would find themselves on opposing sides. that hasn't changed in adulthood as they both became aurors. THE MENTOR: this person has unintentionally taken emmeline under their wing (despite an unwillingness on both ends) and has shown them the ropes at her new job. other than helping emmeline grow as an auror, they also challenge a lot of her black and white ideas of justice. (0/1)

THE EX: young love is a wonderful thing. that is, until it ends. maybe they were tired of emmeline's lack of vulnerability, maybe she was tired of their lack of communication, or maybe they fell out of love. regardless, she still holds a soft spot for them despite her awkward avoidance of their presence as of late.
