“it’s a completely valid concern,” vander acknowledged consolingly. shadowhunters going missing for any length of time was never a good thing. “where have you looked so far? do you think there could be something seriously wrong?” bombarding her with questions was the last thing vander really wanted to do, but this could be important. surely she understood that.

maybe laughing hadn’t been the best reaction he could have had in such situation, especially when it was that absurd, but then again he couldn’t be blamed for that, just the thought of the goat roaming around the institute was enough to make him snort. shaking his head, his expression sobered up and he looked at vander before giving half a shrug. “trust me, i really wish this was just a joke, a not so funny one for the matter, but we really have a goat in the institute. at least when leo’s brother is here.” the shadowhunter offered a genuine smile to the other. “elena has been knitting sweaters for it since right after the fair.” he pulled a face. “and she’s been trying to rope me into helping.” he added with a groan.

slowly but surely vander evaluated then understood what he’d been told, nodding as his brain worked calmly yet diligently. “so...” he finally began in a drawling tone, “not only is there a goat here in the institute, and not only is it kinda noisy, but it’s a goat...who’s noisy...in a sweater?” vander awaited confirmation from the other shadowhunter, just as a final check to ensure he’d gotten that right. “this doesn’t sound like something my dad would be okay with,” he muttered, more to himself than to lukas. ( all the more reason to keep the animals around, in vander’s opinion. the more the merrier and all that. ) “does he know? is this supposed to be a secret?”

he doesn’t quite understand the answer but decides not to pry, accepting it with merely a quiet murmur. “oh,” vander frowns, “well, i’m sorry about that. it’s unfortunate — everybody thinking we can’t be trusted anymore — but i understand it’s just self - preservation and i’m trying not to take it personally. i mean, think of how we’ve treated downworlders for centuries,” he suggests, implying that it might put the current struggles of shadowhunters into a different perspective.
