thought i’d share another thing i made here :’)

i started working on this thing back in january, as russian troops were gathering around our borders, and i got around to finishing it a couple months later, after they retreated from kyiv and my lucky family and i were able to get back home.

for half of the process i was asking myself, “is making this even worth it if it’s going to be bombed to ashes in a couple of weeks?” (the answer was yes); for the other half, i was asking myself how and why do you even make a house now that there are dead and gutted houses all around (the answer was “well, what else is there to do anyway”).

was aiming for the “small ukrainian granny’s apartment” vibe with soviet era “ugly 70s brown” color furniture and a bit of a witchy/magical realism touch :’) details + a bit of ukrainian folk trivia below!

Things my ADHD brain hates

(because being dyslexic extrovert with trauma and -formerly- anxiety was apparently not enough)

-socks, gloves, stockings, tights -WHY

-shoes suck

-sewn in labels

-wool is literal devil, leather is gross and smells bad

-chores -prizeless horror

-eating yesterday’s dinner -gives me groundhog’s day vibes

-tearing foil or peeling tape off the roll -my spine crawls, not just my skin

-clicking mechanical keyboards -why would anyone want to work with something that sounds like an old machine gun

-something I can only describe as animal based goo (egg white, jelly, this kind of stuff)

-hand cream -why can’t it be powder why

-my hair growing back and touching my forehead/neck

it's always a good day to complain about English speakers

something the retro art people forget is that the past still exists in those time periods. Like those photos where every single iconic 80s thing is in the kid’s bedroom–no one lived like that outside of the very wealthy and/or the movies.

Someone kicking around in 1985 was probably living in a house built decades prior, and their parents last renovated in the 70s before the kids were born–because there’s no money for that when you had kids.

I mean look around today, there are plenty of people 10+ years behind the times. Old cars are out there, old fashions, old music–the present day is haunted by the past around every corner, the date doesn’t roll over to a new decade and all the old stuff doesn’t just disappear–it’s all still here.

Those achingly period-appropriate homes you see in movies and TV are just that–sets. Unless you just moved into a brand new home and all your stuff was lost in a fire so you had to replace it your home is not going to be all modern present day shit.

This is also something a lot of future-fiction doesn’t get–the future will have a lot of the past in it, because as humans bumble through life they pick things up and they don’t discard them–Someone who is 40 in 2040 is going to have shit from the 20′s when they got their first apartment or whatever, their home may have been built in 2000 and last remodeled in 2030…what I mean is cutting edge fashions and styles exist on TV but rarely in real life.

Whenever I see girls on tiktok or Twitter complain about how men are “all jerks to each other” and claim “women are always nice to each other and would never bully another woman! They always have each other’s backs and are pleasant to be around!” it just makes me think of my middle school days where the girls at said school made my life a living hell to the point I’m still traumatized by how bad the bullying was til this day. 🙃 Being a female doesn’t mean you can’t be an asshole to other girls.

Today is the Day of commemoration of the victims of Holodomor.

About 10,5 millions people were killed.

These tragedies still live in "no one can be trusted", "be careful because there are evil people around", "don't throw away food".
