What’s the Real Lesson?
Here’s something that happens to ADHD children a lot:  Getting pushed beyond their limits by accident. Here’s how it works and why it’s so bad.
Child says, “I can’t do this.”
Adult (teacher or parent) does not believe it, because Adult has seen Child do things that Adult considers more difficult, and Child is too young to properly articulate why the task is difficult.
Adult decides that the problem is something other than true inability, like laziness, lack of self-confidence, stubbornness, or lack of motivation.
Adult applies motivation in the form of harsher and harsher scoldings and punishments. Child becomes horribly distressed by these punishments. Finally, the negative emotions produce a wave of adrenaline that temporarily repairs the neurotransmitter deficits caused by ADHD, and Child manages to do the task, nearly dropping from relief when it’s finally done.
The lesson Adult takes away is that Child was able to do it all along, the task was quite reasonable, and Child just wasn’t trying hard enough. Now, surely Child has mastered the task and learned the value of simply following instructions the first time.
The lessons Child takes away? Well, it varies, but it might be:
-How to do the task while in a state of extreme panic, which does NOT easily translate into doing the task when calm.
-Using emergency fight-or-flight overdrive to deal with normal daily problems is reasonable and even expected.
-It’s not acceptable to refuse tasks, no matter how difficult or potentially harmful.
-Asking for help does not result in getting useful help.
I’m now in my 30’s, trying to overcome chronic depression, and one major barrier is that, thanks to the constant unreasonable demands placed on me as a child, I never had the chance to develop actual healthy techniques for getting stuff done. At 19, I finally learned to write without panic, but I still need to rely on my adrenaline addiction for simple things like making phone calls, tidying the house, and paying bills. Sometimes, I do mean things to myself to generate the adrenaline rush, because there’s no one else around to punish me.
But hey, at least I didn’t get those terrible drugs, right? That might have had nasty side effects.

Just wanted to add that sometimes people with OCD can develop reading problems as well, no matter how well-versed or fast they are with words in times when their compulsions don’t actively take over their lives. Reading subtitles or longer pieces of text, e.g. book pages, can be exhausting and feel like a chore instead of as a part of entertainment. Some need to read the same sentence more than 10 times, read each letter individually, or a combination of that, before being able to continue and then still feel unsure if what they read has been interpreted correctly.
There will always be folks around who can only enjoy something if it’s dubbed, purely for reasons like dyslexia, OCD, or literally any other disorder that can envelop reading problems. No one chooses to have trouble reading, but you can choose not to be a dick towards people who do and prefer dubs over subs as a result.
A note on bullshit Dubs vs Subtitles
Its frankly fucking infuriating that tumblr will bend over backwards about providing subtitles and promoting the use of subtitles for those who have hearing difficulties, but continue to laugh and deride people who rely on dubs as being lazy ‘unintellectual’ idiots.
i’m dyslexic guys
reading is fucking exhausting for me. I’m a smart fucking person, I’ve written a goddamn dissertation, and I was in AP English in high school. But reading is fucking hard. Especially reading a white Helvetica font on constant changing background in the bottom 1/5 of a scene. like its not rocket science but some of you arseholes apparently really need to be told this
Subtitles are not dyslexia friendly
look, there are a lot of people out there in the world who have low literacy. some of those factors are developmental like dyslexia, some of those are to do with economics and access to education.
but its fucking infuriating to see you all patting yourselves on the back for being so accommodating for those with hearing difficulties, while making no attempt to even understand those with literacy struggles, let alone help us. in fact, you’ll actively make fun of us
If i want to watch something with subs, I have to watch each line of dialogue at least 3 times, often more. an hours episode of tv can easily take me multiple hours to watch because I have to keep going back and rewatching moments so I can read it once for the words, then a second time to understand the contextual meaning, and then a third time to be able to watch the actors while thinking about what they’ve said. And thats fucking exhausting.
So you guys have got to stop jeering and sneering at the use of dubs. yeah, a lot of performance is lost in a dub, but its also lost by not even looking at whats happening on the screen because i’m struggling through trying to read the dialogue fast enough to comprehend the written text into what it means. theres a fair gap in my mind  between a reading a phrase like ‘i want to leave’ and interpreting that as ‘oh this character wants to leave’. It might sound dumb to you but thats how dyslexia fucking works. its not floating words and all jumbling up letters, its me being a fluent reader in my native language needing a minute to translate written words into actual meanings. and thats an exhausting and difficult thing to do when I’m trying to watch an actors performance or a perfect camera angle.
TL;DR stop shaming dub users. low literacy does not make you an idiot. dyslexia fucking exists. stop being cruel
