Some photos from when I went exploring a local bog a month ago. Flowers are of Yellow Pitcher Plant Sarracenia flava, Golden Club Orontium aquaticum, and Swollen Bladderwort Utricularia inflata. Bogs and swamps are stereotypically depicted as full of biting insects and other unpleasant things, but they aren’t full of mosquitoes(usually) and are actually really peaceful and beautiful places to explore.

Dusting this off
In the wake of wait appears to be Elon Musk’s purchasing of Twitter to make it into his personal playground, I’m dusting off my Tumblr. This might be a good change for me. I often feel  anxious scrolling my Twitter timeline. I’ll be posting some of my own photos and possible writing here in the near future.

pin-tailed sandgrouse (Pterocles alchata)
The pin-tailed sandgrouse (Pterocles alchata) is a medium large bird in the sandgrouse family. It has a small, pigeon like head and neck and a sturdy, compact body. It has long pointed wings, which are white underneath, a long tail and a fast direct flight. Flocks fly to watering holes at dawn. The call is a loud kattar-kattar. This gregarious species breeds on dry open treeless plains and similar habitats. Its nest is a ground scrape into which two or three cream-coloured eggs with cryptic markings are laid. Both sexes incubate the eggs.
The pin-tailed sandgrouse is about 35 centimetres (14 in) long. Its head and upperparts are yellowish-green. The underparts are white with a chestnut breast band separating the belly from the green neck. Sexes are somewhat similar, but the female is better camouflaged and has a shorter tail than the male. There are two subspecies; P. a. alchata breeds in southern Europe and P. a. caudacutus breeds in northwestern Africa, the Middle East and southeastern Asia. It is a partial migrant, with some Asian birds moving to the Middle East and northern Pakistan in winter. Males of the eastern race have duller underparts than the European birds, and the females have white, rather than yellow, wing coverts.

Construction illegally started here last year without the proper paper work. And implied threats.
This wasn’t even eminent domain, because they never seized the land they just started showing up with it still privately owned.
So, I live nowhere near here, but if anyone wants to try to do something I felt I should spread the word.
This should be something supporters of private land ownership and enviornmentalists both agree on.

NOVA Next: Going Vegan Isn’t the Most Sustainable Option for Humanity
The vegan diet uses no perennial cropland, making it a less effective use of land than you might suspect.
Researchers found that the carrying capacity—the size of the population that can be supported indefinitely by the resources of an ecosystem—of the vegan diet is actually less substantial than two of the vegetarian diets and two out of the four omnivorous diets they studied.

Angels
In the words of the artist Franck Bohbot:
“Almost everyone has some idea of what Los Angeles is, even if they’ve never been there. Home to Hollywood, the city churns out myth after American myth. Some see the city as a necessary part of a glamorous life — they migrate there to become stars. Others live ordinary lives and work ordinary jobs in this city of spectacle. And some see LA’s darker side — east coaster Jack Kerouac famously wrote that Los Angeles is “the loneliest and most brutal of American cities.” These photos highlight the oddly authentic beauty in this city of myth, however lonely and brutal, however packaged and commercial. Here, even the metallic glinting pole of exercise equipment along the shoreline, or a solitary streetlight in neon darkness, or a thrust of power lines cutting across the sky, captures something essential about the so-called “city of angels.””
