… “that is a …pretty fair comparison, yeah.” amber said with a little bit of a laugh and a nod as she pulled her notepad and pen out of the pocket of her apron. “there’s usually less blood and gore here though, so i would say that the er rush is definitely a little more stressful.” amber reached up to tuck back a strand of hair that had escaped her braid behind her ear, nodding as she jotted down the other woman’s order. “alright, well, let me know if you want to add anything to that. your order shouldn’t be long despite all the craziness, fries just take a few to fry up.”
veronica raised a brow with a laugh. “ usually? so sometimes there is blood and gore here? i’d better keep an eye out. ” she leant back in her seat with a contented sigh. “ thank you so much, i hope you get to relax a little soon at least, take your time coming back over i’m not in any rush. ”

declan hesitated. he could understand that feeling of loneliness. he didn’t like going home when the kids were with hope. he loved his life — but he didn’t love that feeling. “ah, i see. you talk a big game.” he motioned towards the dartboard. “go ahead and prove yourself, ma'am.”
veronica smiled as she stood with the darts in her hand, she could throw pretty well, she’d had a lot of practice over the years. she took her stance and threw the darts, two made it onto the actual dartboard and the other fell to the floor in front of it. “ okay, well, i’m a little rusty. ”

“Damn.” Alex tilted her head at the woman. “Someone got out the wrong side of bed.” She raiser an eyebrow slightly, curious at what could have gotten her this snappy. “Thanks. S’just – new job in a hometown I haven’t seen for about twenty years. Got me a bit – foggy. I’m Alex. Hope your day gets better soon.” The brunette gave her a small smile and a shrug.
“ yeah, something like that. ” veronica laughed and smiled apologetically at the other woman. she listened for a moment as the other spoke and nodded knowingly. “ i’ve just returned to seattle myself actually, i was in florida for a little while...i think my day will get better, well i hope it does anyway, it’s nice to meet you though. ”

Although it had been quite a few years, Alex was no stranger to Seattle. She had just decided the farther away from her family she could get, the better. However, as the rest of them had spread out across the country, and a more than decent job offer had appeared, Seattle didn’t seem so bad after all. The rain had never bothered her, and after the last few years in busy New York, she really wouldn’t mind somewhere that felt at least more like home.
Walking through the doors to Seattle Grace Mercy West, she suddenly felt scared that this might have been the worst call she had ever made. The last thing Alex wanted was to run into anyone from her past, nothing scared her more after having spent almost twenty years away from the city. She had never been one for being scared, but the amount of trauma she had buried deep down and refused to deal with from Seattle seemed to weigh heavier than she had realized. The brunette took a deep breath and shook her head, trying to rid herself of the overwhelming feeling, shoving it back into the tiny compartment in the back of her head. There were few things Alex could do as well as compartmentalizing. Well, being an orthopedic surgeon was one of those. She lifted her head and made her way over to the first doctor she saw, hoping they could point her in the direction of the orthopedic floor. “Hey, I’m new here. Think you could point me towards ortho?”
veronica’s day was going from bad to worse, she’d picked up the wrong coffee at the coffee cart and then an intern had messed with some of her paperwork that she had in order so she couldn’t help but snap as she turned to face the new doctor. “ there’s signs everywhere, can you not read? ” she shook her head and tutted slightly before realising that she was being mean and gathering herself a little. “ if you go into the first elevator and go up to the fourth floor, ortho will be on the right hand side, sorry to be an ass...long day already. ”

Cat had really appreciated Ronnie giving her the space they both needed, but after everything that had happened she couldn’t help but admit that she missed her so very much. So when she saw her phone was ringing and that it was the very woman she’d been thinking about, it only took her a moment before she answered. “Ronnie, hey, are you alright?”
ronnie smiled upon hearing the other’s voice, a voice that still gave her butterflies to this day. she smiled though cat could not see her but she would hear it in her voice. “ hey darling, i’m okay, are you? i was just thinking maybe i could come and see you tonight. i miss you. ” cat was the only person that ronnie could be completely vulnerable around and admitting she missed her was such a big thing. “ i mean, if you’re busy it’s fine, we can catch up another day... ”

declan liked to unwind with a bottle of beer and a game of darts some evenings after work. when he didn’t have the kids, most of the time he didn’t like to just go home and sit on his own. he had just arrived and leaned across the bar to ask the bartender for a cluster of darts when his boss spoke. he glanced over and smiled cheerfully. “hey, what brings you here?” he asked. sensing her reluctance, he decided to hold out the darts as an offering. “fancy a game?”
“ just needed some me time i suppose but i really could’ve just done that at home...i guess being around people is a good thing though, combats the loneliness. ” veronica laughed a little self deprecatingly and shrugged taking the darts from him. “ sure but don’t whine when i kick your ass... ”

“ – hey, take a seat wherever. i’ll be right with you.” she was supposed to have been off fifteen minutes ago, but being understaffed as of late meant that she was rarely getting off when she was supposed to. it was frustrating but, well, she could use the hours, and more time at the diner also meant more tips. they were almost uncharacteristically busy for a lunch rush, so amber wasn’t really expecting to get off even when the other waitress showed up for her shift. “sorry,” amber said as she approached the booth that the other had chosen to sit in. “lunch rush is a little crazier than usual. what can i get going for you?”
veronica decided on her only day off that week to go and eat out, she considered calling cat and inviting her along but decided against it. she headed to a diner that she had been frequenting a lot lately, lunches on her days off from the hospital, late nights when she couldn’t sleep and other times when she managed to coax a friend into going with her. veronica did as she was told and found a place to sit, she sat down where she could see everything going on and she loved that, she was in her element people watching. “ i can see that. ” ronnie responded to the other with an apologetic smile. “ it’s like the er at the hospital during any kind of holiday. i feel for you. ” she perused the menu for a moment as if she wasn’t going to order exactly what she always did. “ i’ll just have a coffee with a side of fries, please and thank you. ”

“ you, me, drinks at joes in five? ” it was a bit of a reach but veronica fancied a little something something that evening and would drag along whichever unsuspecting victim that she could. “ i’ll buy... ” if that wasn’t enough to pique their interest she didn’t know what was.

veronica sat at the bar with a glass of whiskey in hand. she was getting too old for this, all the noise around her was just irritating and she contemplated leaving. no, she wouldn’t go. she barely ever had any fun these days. she ordered another drink before turning around to look at her surroundings. she sighed and mumbled to herself. “ i really am too old for this. ”

“ look it isn’t hard... ” veronica stood in front of the almost cowering intern with her hands on her hips. “ you go down two lots of stairs, go left and then go right and you’re at the lab where you get the results that i need...okay? ” the intern nodded sheepishly and went off on their way. veronica turned to person beside her with a small huff. “ it’s hard to believe they made it through med school sometimes, isn’t it? ”

ronnie wouldn’t say that she had been ignoring cat, but she felt like the pair needed a little more space before they could truly come together again so that’s what she had been doing. she had been in back to back surgeries all day and that made staying away from cat much easier. she scrubbed out of her final surgery of the day and headed to the attending’s lounge to get her things together and get changed so she could leave. she got out her phone and hovered over cat’s name for a moment before deciding to actually press the call button, she felt silly for feeling a little nervous as the phone rang but she wanted to see her.

ronnie turned the corner to the cafeteria with a frown upon seeing the length of the queue that faced her. she decided against spending the entirety of the next hour in a queue so grabbed some snacks out of a vending machine and sat down at an almost vacant table. “ why do people queue up for that crap? we all know the food sucks. ” she turned to the person beside her with a somewhat incredulous look on her face and shrugged as she opened the chips in her hand.

okay, yeah, she’d slept with some doctor (well, he said he was a doctor) from the hospital after working there for less than a week. and, yes, they’d done it in the hospital. so what? she’d done worse. as she stumbled around the now empty room to reassemble her outfit, she yelped at the door opening. “hell!” her top was in her hands, pants gratefully already on and secure. “people in london usually knocked. is that not a thing here?” bella rolled her eyes. @traumasstart
veronica needed ten minutes, that was all. she wanted a break from everything going on around her so she made her way to an on call room, after trying a couple of doors which were locked she finally found a room that was unlocked and sighed in relief. she gasped as she entered and it was clearly already in use. “ well over here we normally lock the doors. ” she stood with her hands on her hips attempting to avert her eyes away from the younger woman. “ i really need rest so it would be great if you could leave or at least put some clothes on, we wouldn’t want rumours circulating. ”

brooke rolled her eyes and pouted. there was no way she would ask him what research project he was going after. that weren’t them. they were like cats and dogs since they started their residencies. “yeah, hell no. i’m not working with declan unless it’s for a million dollars. you don’t actually have that kind of money lying around, do you?”
veronica matched the expression on brooke’s face, rolling her own eyes. “ you know, you really are like children at times but i suppose i wouldn’t have either of you any way and do you really think i would be here if i had a million dollars laying around? i think if i weren’t here you’d be in charge of the department, but don’t get any ideas. ”

“I’m certainly trying.” Lachlan assured her. His leadership skills had certainly come under fire in recent months, and he was just doing his best to keep himself on top of it all and prove that he was really worth the position he held. “My office door is always open if you need it Veronica. I mean that.”
ronnie smiled gratefully at her boss, she doubted she would take him up on his offer, she tended to keep things to herself but she was grateful for the offer all the same. “ thank you, dr. covington. i appreciate it. i’m glad cat has a friend like you. ”

Cat’s smile only grew at Ronnie’s praise, nothing she ever cooked was ever going to be amazing but ‘not half bad’ was a pretty good compliment for her. “Good, good I’m glad you like it.”
“ well like is going a bit far. ” ronnie smirked as she joked. she finished up her food and sat back full and content. “ i think that’s just what i needed, cat. thank you. ” she reached a hand out for cat’’s hand and smiled. “ i don’t know if i’ve got room for dessert now. ”

SELF PARA.
ronnie smiled in a somewhat deceiving way as she kissed cat goodbye as the latter left to go to work. it was a bittersweet kiss and the smile was hiding a world of pain. ronnie knew that it was now or never and she sighed softly as she closed the door to their house. she headed up to their bedroom where she began taking her things from the drawers and the wardrobe, next she went to the bathroom and then to each room throughout the house, she packed everything up in multiple bags before sitting down to do the hardest part of all of this.
pen in hand, ronnie sat at their dining room table, she never expected this to be easy but she hadn’t ever expected it to be this hard either, she was torn. she didn’t know if she was doing the right thing or not. she decided not to fret over everything too much and just decided to write.
dear cat, this isn’t easy for me to write but i feel like it needs to be done now. i fear that we have reached a point where we are wanting different things. i don’t think i will ever want to have children, i feel as if our life is perfect as it is but i know that you want nothing more than to be a mother and i can’t stop you from wanting that and i can’t be the one who stops you from being a mom. i have decided that i can no longer continue in our marriage and that is for both of our sakes, you should be with someone who can give you what you want. i will always love you more than words can even begin to explain but this one thing is just ruining us slowly. i have packed all of my things and i will be moving to florida to be with my brother. i have left you my engagement ring and wedding ring, you can sell them or throw them away...just do with them as you see fit.
i want you to know that this isn’t something i am doing on a whim and i wouldn’t be doing it if i truly didn’t believe that we had run our course but alas we have so i am leaving. you will always have a place in my heart and i will see you again one day.
all my love forever, veronica.
and with that ronnie took off her rings, gathered her belongings and left before cat returned home that evening, she shed many tears but really felt as if she had done the right thing by the both of them.
