yeah in my head that’s what he meant to say. drives me insane too
so the thing about what might happen if jay got to read tgg (the book as if nick wrote it) is that there’s 6 billion ways for it to go and they’re all fucking funny. these are examples of things i think jay would say to nick, especially if natsby happened
1. “You call me gorgeous three times in this book.”
2. “Do I really say old sport that much?”
3. “Nick. I would say you complimented me more than once.”
4. “Were you—Nick, were you trying to say ‘I love you’?”
5. “What happened between you and Mckee?”
6. “I think you judge people a lot more than you think you do.”
7. “Why are you talking about your cousin’s husband like this?”

NICK CARRAWAY - THE GREAT GATSBY

reasoning: he describes gatsby's smile like he's in love (which he is), explains how he hates everyone except him, and dedicates a whole book to him. and also there was the whole thing with chester mckee which was kinda gay.

Is he gay?
disclaimer: this is a hc, not speculating on what the writers intentions were.
reasons: The entire book. Just... the entire book. (And the movie adaptations as well.) - he could not give a fuck about Jordan and was so obsessed with his male best friend the whole book

fitzgerald’s response: write about the beautiful man
hemingway: kill the most beautiful man so he doesn’t have to face it
Fitzgerald: you ever seen a man so beautiful you want to immortalize him forever?
Hemingway: you ever seen a man so beautiful you want to launch across the table and strangle him then and there?

what if i killed myself and everyone in this room
"You've got Daisy," I said. "Why do you make yourself miserable by trying to live over the past?"
"I've got to," he announced with conviction. "That's what I've got to do—live the past over again. And I don't want to stand by running away.
"Why,—" he added, "I could be a great man if I could just forget that once I lost out on something I wanted. My life has got to be like this—" He drew a slanting line from the lawn to the stars. "It's got to go up."
"What is it you want to do most."
"Upset things," he said intently. "I want to turn the world upside down and give people something to think about. I don't care how much people talk about me or hate me. Just so I could make them admire me, make everybody admire me—like my company did in the war. They knew I was a good man. They gave me a watch."
I smiled but he didn't see.
"Do you think Jay Gatsby's a good name for that sort of thing?" he demanded anxiously. he said suddenly in a ringing voice, "There goes the great Jay Gatsby
I was afraid he was going to change it on the spot.
"Jay Gatsby!" he cried suddenly in a ringing voice. "There goes the great Jay Gatsby! That's what people are going to say—wait and see. I'm only thirty-two now."

um. this was written for sociology as ‘the other side of the story’ (i didn’t know disney and so. teacher said ‘yeah you can do gatsby as long as it’s not a MC’) luckily chester is a MC in my heart. i love him
basically it’s chapter two from chester’s POV.
logging in might get you around AO3’s silly little issue it has with me sharing a link that’s designated registered users only, but it might not. if so, it’s my most recent fic, otherwise known as ‘the start of a summer’
