I'm realizing now that a lot of white people (especially in the middle class, suburban range) consider most music and art and writing to be jokes, maybe because of some weird protestant stuff, maybe just from a genuine refusal to deal in anything with heart and emotion and eagerness. It's certainly very depressing. Maybe surrender yourself to the beauty of music, and you won't write off songs by marginalized people as jokes?
