MIP #3
Basic Video 103 DMS SP 2020 Charlie Best MIP #3 DUE: 2/20 Moving Image Project #3: Notebook Inspired by Marie Menken’s “Notebook”, for this assignment you will keep a video “notebook”. Then, you will write a response to your video notebook. Both the response and video notebook will be due 2/20 at the beginning of class. Video Notebook: Step 1 - For at least 3 days (they do not have to be consecutive), record a total of  3 minutes of video clips. -These videos should be of anything happening/existing around you. -These videos cannot be filmed in your dorm room/bedroom/living quarters. -You must hold the camera while filming (do not set the camera down or use a tripod). -It is recommended to record many things for a short amount of time each day that you record, instead of one or two things for a longer amount of time. (watch Marie Menken’s video to see an example). -Other than the above requirements, there is no limit on what your videos are of, how you hold the camera, what you are doing while filming, the time of day, etc. Follow and do what you find visually interesting, curious, exciting, or weird. Video Notebook: Step 2 - Transfer your video clips from your camera to a video editing program. Adobe Premiere is recommended. Put these clips together in one video. Do not edit the clips in any way. Export the video to a .mov file. Response: Step 1 - Watch your video notebook from beginning to end. Make observations about your video notebook, and write some notes. Here are some possible topics/questions to help you: -did any patterns emerge? -what colors are present? -are there many people? Plants? Buildings? -are the images abstract or can we tell what is in the video? -did you move the camera quickly, slowly, somewhere in between? -did you record things you are familiar with or unfamiliar? -what elements are most present in your video notebook? The “notes” part of your response can be informal. Complete sentences are not necessary. Response: Step 2 -  After writing some observations about your video notebook, reflect on those observations in writing. There is no right or wrong answer. Maybe there isn’t an answer at all. Here are some possible reflections: -Why did you think you recorded what you did? -What stood out to you the most? -What part did you enjoy recording the most?  What part did you enjoy watching the most? -Did you learn anything? Did you surprise yourself? -Did any part of your video notebook remind you of something you had seen before? -Were you frustrated by anything?  Please use complete sentences for this part of the response. Email your response to [email protected] or hand in a hard copy in class. How This Will be Graded This assignment will be graded out of 15 points. Following all instructions and turning in the assignment on time in the correct format will give you 10 points. The remaining 5 points will be based on the thoroughness of your response. Helpful Hints -start sooner rather than later -make sure you book your equipment/editing space ahead of time -stay curious and focus on your process more than your product -try things you have not tried before -plan out time to explore -take your camera with you while you are having fun doing something not related to class -A link to view Marie Menken’s “Notebook” will be on the class blog. Email [email protected] with questions or to set up an office hour appointment. **Please note, if you email me after 9pm, there is a low chance I will respond before the next morning.**

MIP #2 - Elements
Moving Image Project #2: Elements **This assignment is now due Thursday, 2/13***   Make 3 videos that document/express the exploration of a specific element of time based media. You can make more if you wish. Quality over quantity is important here, but quantity in either exploration length or amount of studies could potentially benefit your making practice. Think of these videos as rigorous studies. You are to deeply investigate how an element can appear/operate/be present in a video. Most time based media has a mixture of elements present. These exploratory videos will too, so do not worry about that. The goal is that, for example, your video about Texture is clearly focusing strongly on texture. There may be movement/light/contrast involved, but the first thing we are understanding is that this video is studying texture. The main goals of this assignment are for you to: -gain a deeper understanding of some time based media elements, and hopefully learn something new -gain familiarity with the production and post production process -develop formal studies/experiments that can aid you in making future videos Requirements for Content and Form Please select from the following elements: Time   Space    Movement   Texture   Light   Color   Balance   Contrast    Each video will be at least 30 seconds long. You can make longer work. Please have your videos exported to a .mov/.mp4 format, and saved on your portable hard drive. Bring this to class on 02/13. Please try to have your videos be no larger than 1GB each. How This Will be Graded This assignment will be graded out of 15 points. Following all instructions and turning in the assignment on time in the correct format will give you 7.5 points. Your 3 videos will be graded as a whole “reel” or collection. They should all meet the criteria below to some degree. The remaining 7.5 will be based on the following criteria. -experimentation -clearly identifiable presence of elements selected -presence of exploration during BOTH shooting and editing the footage Helpful Hints -start sooner rather than later -make sure you book your equipment/editing space ahead of time -stay curious and focus on your process more than your product  Email [email protected] with questions or to set up an office hour appointment. **Please note, if you email me after 9pm, there is a low chance I will respond before the next morning.**
