This involves the local government issuing tax-preferred bonds to finance the Anaerobic Digestion, or LFG energy project. This approach (if available) is the most cost-effective way to finance a project because the interest rate is low and the terms can often be structured for long repayment periods.
However, municipalities can face barriers to issuing bonds, and therefore it may be better to look at:
Funding Instrument 4 - Direct Municipal Funding
Direct Municipal Funding, possibly the lowest-cost financing available other than Municipal Bonds, uses the operating budget of the city, county, landfill authority or other municipal government to fund the project.
This approach eliminates the need to obtain outside financing or project partners, and it avoids delays caused by the extensive project evaluations usually required by lenders or partners.
However, many municipalities may not have a budget that is sufficient to finance a project, or may have many projects competing for scarce resources.
Delays and complications may also arise if public approval is required.
Funding Instrument 5 - Lease Financing
Lease Financing provides a means for the project owner or operator to lease all or part of the energy project assets.
This arrangement usually allows the transfer of tax benefits or credits to an entity that can best make use of them.
Lease arrangements can allow for the user to purchase the assets or extend the lease when the term of the lease has been fulfilled.
The benefit of lease financing is that it frees up capital funds of the owner or operator but allowing them control of the project.
The disadvantages include complex accounting and liability issues and loss of tax benefits to the project owner or operator.
Finally, there may be the possibility of grant programs for some anaerobic digestion and renewable energy projects:
Funding Instrument 6 - Grant Programs
Grant Programs, offered by many federal and state programs may provide funding for LFG, biogas and anaerobic digestion energy projects.

With a general election in December 2019, we thought we would write about the news for anaerobic digestion.
Stop Gap Funding Urged to Support the Rollout of Biomethane Plants
Chancellor of the Exchequer Sajid Javid has been urged to provide stop gap funding to support the rollout of biomethane plants when the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme expires in 2021.
In a letter submitted to the Treasury, ahead of the scheduled date of next month’s Budget, the Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ABDA) has called for action across government to more effectively support the process, which traps the methane created by organic waste.
It says that it is ‘critical’ that there is a commitment of additional support for the anaerobic digestion (AD) process beyond March 2021, when the RHI is due to end, including an interim pot of funding for deploying biomethane plants.
The letter says this support is necessary while a future funding mechanism is developed because existing tools are not fully fit for purpose. For example, while the Contracts for Difference provide support for larger AD plants, many in the sector are small. via www.edie.net
Anaerobic Digestion Needs Urgent UK Government Clarification of Financial Support if the UK is to Achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2050
Anaerobic digestion (AD) is currently recognised for its role in generating green energy, but it also prevents methane emissions from organic wastes left to break down in landfill. There is currently a huge untapped potential for methane capture, use and conversion with millions of tonnes of organic wastes from farming, food and sewage currently not being treated through AD. In addition, AD treatment of organics recovers nutrients to fertilise depleted soils and improve their ability to sequester carbon.
The Treasury has been tasked with coordinating government efforts to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050. Good cross-departmental policy coordination is therefore essential to enable the industry to grow and achieve widespread emission abatement.
Government must clarify its financial support as a matter of urgency, especially as around 70 LAs will be signing new waste contracts in the time period leading to the separate food waste collections implementation deadline.

Anaerobic Digestion Screening System Proposed Using 3D Printed Mini-Bioreactors
Research work has demonstrated the use of mini AD systems for high-throughput process screening to improve AD systems and has been successful. The excessive amounts of biowaste and wastewater produced in our society need to be taken care of properly. Better performing AD reactors contribute considerable to the sustainable treatment of biowaste and wastewater.
Today, anaerobic digesters are used as systems for treating waste, with bioreactors usually available in a variety of different shapes. The devices are not only used to handle waste with the help of microorganisms, but they are responsible for producing ‘high-value products' like biogas and biofertilizers.
Reactors may be large-scale, on the magnitude of a plant-scale reactor, or smaller. The authors explain that there is a need for reactors on the micro- or mini-scale as anaerobic digestion processes become miniaturized. During that process, sensory data can be increased—but maintained in a relatively small area—saving money and energy. Geometric integrity continues with the downsizing, which is sometimes referred to as isometric scaling—while other elements may not scale in a similar fashion (allometric).
"The results demonstrated that AD in low working volumes was feasible and efficient in terms of biogas quantity and quality. The results also established links between scale-down and process stability," stated the authors. via 3dprint.com

Organic waste is traditionally either incinerated and emitted as an environmental pollutant or left in a landfill where it rots and releases methane, a harmful greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. Through the use of anaerobic digester technology, Bioenergy DevCo offers an environmentally smart, proven technology to break down biodegradable waste materials naturally, using microorganisms. This natural chemical process creates two important products at an industrial scale. First is renewable natural gas, which can be burned cleanly and turned into a versatile source of renewable energy by being injected into a national electric grid or used as a transportation fuel as compressed natural gas.
Second, is a product called digestate, an organic soil amendment with the same organic and storm water management capability as compost.
