VidOvation Live PD Control Room
faced several technical issues.  One major challenge was how to cost-effectively produce a lie cop show in six cities simultaneously using up to 41 cameras.  The show is a REMI (Remote Integration Model) production, where every camera is home run from each police vehicle to A&E master control in New York.  All cameras must be in perfect genlock synchronization and have perfect audio and video lip-sync because there is no time in a live broadcast to correct synchronization issues.
In this presentation, we’ll dive into details behind the video transmission solution from VidOvation and AVIWEST that solved this unique technical challenge.  Learn about AVIWEST’s SafeStreams technology, with advanced forward error correction, that automatically re-requests dropped packets and uses bonding techniques, precise timing, and adaptive bitrate encoding over bonded cellular and the public internet.
Time permitting, we will also discuss new developments in wireless technology that
Fiber Optic Extender for AB512 Wireless Video System
facilitate broadcast-quality transmission up to 3 kilometers with only 7 milliseconds of latency.  A unique combination of adaptive modulation and a highly adaptive H.264 codec enable reduced latency and increased picture quality in wireless video transmission.

wireless video system. ABonAir has achieved the highly sought after goal of 7 milli-seconds or sub-frame latency while still using the industry standard of H.264 encoding. The typical latency of 2-6 frames or 30-90 milliseconds is not acceptable in many applications. ABonAir’s very low latency of 7 milliseconds is a game changer.
Transmit video directly from cameras to your remote truck wirelessly, with only 7 milliseconds delay. Sports, news, and reality shows have unrepeatable moments… football goals, parachutists’ landings, split-second finishes. You can’t afford to miss a second of crucial content in your broadcast. Wireless transmission means your camera operator can get the shots that aren’t possible with an encumbered cabled camera.
Low latency, reliable transmission, broadcast quality video, great price!
Low latency – 7 msec delay
Switch between multiple live cameras with no lip sync issues

Guide to Adaptive Live Broadcasting - VidOvation Blog
Bonded cellular video transport solutions use some combination of dedicated hardware and various network optimization techniques to ensure the system will adapt to changing network conditions.
See the article in Creative Planet Network.
These days, the goal is to broadcast live from anywhere, whether it’s a high school football game or the scene of a natural disaster. As broadcasters well know, mobile production and electronic and satellite newsgathering can be plagued with technical challenges. Our customers often come to us struggling with weak signals, interference, signal loss, latency, poor picture quality, lack of redundancy and more. Fortunately, there are feasible, real-world solutions that will keep their live coverage on track no matter what the conditions.
One of those solutions is bonded cellular technology, which is the focus of this guide. The technology bonds any available combination of network interfaces—including local cellular and Wi-Fi networks, Ethernet, and satellite—for high-quality and reliable video transmission links. With its ease of use, flexibility to support a wide range of networks, and ability to deliver live coverage from places trucks can’t go, bonded cellular technology helps broadcasters alleviate frustration and save money.
CP Communications Uses AVIWEST DMNG PRO180-RA to Transmit Live Video Captured From an Athlete’s Wheelchair
Bonded cellular video transport solutions use some combination of dedicated hardware and various network optimization techniques to ensure the system will adapt to changing network conditions. That’s because simply getting a connection is not enough; the picture also has to look good. If there is a problem with the cellular network or the internet connection, for example, bonded cellular solutions will self-adjust to minimize the likelihood of signal loss or other issues. In areas where there is no cellular signal, some solutions can hook to other IP connections, such as LAN, Wi-Fi, Satellite, and BGAN. Some solutions are so versatile that they’ve been able to broadcast live over distances of 11,000 miles with latency as low as 1.2 seconds.
youtube
VidOvation provides Bonded Cellular for First Live Reality Cop Show
In most applications, the talent can go out alone with nothing but a camera, a tripod and a lightweight cellular transmitter that can be mounted on the back of the camera or placed in a backpack. Just hook the backpack onto the side of the tripod, set up the shot and turn on the backpack to transmit live, broadcast-quality video from virtually anywhere in the world. When the transmitter is mounted on the camera, setup is even quicker. All cables can be prewired for video, IFB, and audio. If the operator should get into trouble, a simple button press lets master control take over and operate the link remotely.
Being able to send one person to cover a story instead of a two- or three-person crew certainly saves money. So does getting rid of the truck, and the portability and versatility of bonded cellular can eliminate the need for a satellite, ENG or mobile production truck in many situations. Consider this conservative estimate: If it costs $2,500 per day to rent a satellite truck, and you rent it for 25 percent of the year, then you could save as much as $228,000 per year by replacing that truck with a bonded cellular solution.
AVIWEST DMNG PRO180 Election Night 2016
Clearly bonded cellular technology makes good financial sense in many live broadcast workflows. Whether it’s news, reality TV, sports or entertainment, bonded cellular is the solution for getting live shots to any master control in the world. At the same time, the right bonded cellular solution mitigates the problems and limitations of traditional satellite, ENG, and mobile production. When choosing a bonded cellular system, be sure to evaluate for ease of use, reliability, and ability to transmit in challenging environments.

VidOvation’s AVIWEST Bonded Cellular System Rides Along During NYC Marathon’s Women’s Wheelchair Race - VidOvation Blog
CP Communications Uses AVIWEST DMNG PRO180-RA to Transmit Live Video Captured From an Athlete’s Wheelchair
VidOvation today announced that AVIWEST’s DMNG PRO180-RA bonded cellular system reliably provided live broadcast coverage of the women’s wheelchair race during the New York City Marathon on Nov. 5. As AVIWEST’s exclusive distributor in the United States, VidOvation supplied the AVIWEST gear to CP Communications, the New York-based production service and digital media technology rental company whose expert technicians designed the video acquisition and transmission solutions and operated the equipment during the marathon.
“The only way to get live pictures from the course during a marathon is to use wireless technology. From there, bonded cellular is a good option for ensuring video gets where it needs to go, even in a dynamic, uncontrollable environment with millions of people taxing the network,” said Jim Malone, director of technology for CP Communications. “VidOvation’s AVIWEST system not only delivered a solid feed during the women’s wheelchair race, but its command-and-control capabilities gave us far more control over the video than we’ve had with some other systems we’ve used. Our technicians were happy with how it performed and found it to be a valuable production tool.”
CP Communications Uses AVIWEST DMNG PRO180-RA to Transmit Live Video Captured From an Athlete’s Wheelchair
CP Communications had more than 50 technicians and nine vehicles at the marathon. Teams were tracking alongside selected runners and wheelchair contestants, capturing live video from the course, and relaying that video to viewers of ABC, ESPN, and other Disney properties.
For the women’s wheelchair race, CP Communications mounted a 5.8-ounce package, provided by Inertia Unlimited and consisting of a camera, battery, and microwave transmitter, onto a wheelchair. The camera was positioned over the athlete’s right shoulder to capture the competitor’s perspective. A scooter equipped with a microwave receiver and an AVIWEST DMNG PRO180-RA unit rode along about 25 feet away from the wheelchair. The wheelchair’s POV system transmitted video to the scooter on a microwave channel, and then the scooter’s receiver handed the video off to the AVIWEST bonded cellular unit for transmission to the internet. From there, the crew in the production truck grabbed the video from the internet and passed it to the production switcher. An AVIWEST DMNG StreamHub studio receiver inside the truck accepted the signals from the scooter’s AVIWEST unit, while built-in AVIWEST SafeStreams® technology applied special stream-grooming techniques to improve link quality and reliability.
CP Communications used bonded cellular technology as a backup for the traditional microwave feeds related to the men’s and women’s lead runners and other selected athletes, but in the wheelchair race, the AVIWEST bonded cellular system was the only means of transmitting video from the scooter to the production area.
“During the women’s wheelchair race, bonded cellular proved to be the most convenient way to get the wheelchair video from the scooter to the production truck because it reduced the complexity and amount of hardware we had to put on the scooter to get the feed. All it took was the microwave receiver and the bonded transmitter,” Malone said. “Having the AVIWEST unit on the scooter made for a very simple and efficient bidirectional connection that came together quickly, and most importantly, the unit responded well and gave us very consistent video coming from the relay on the scooter.”
The AVIWEST DMNG PRO180-RA is a live-video transmission system that uses up to eight 3G/4G cellular connections, two IP Ethernet connections, Wi-Fi, and satellite. Patented antenna technology, superior cellular radios, and the SafeStreams resilient and robust transmission protocol make the DMNG PRO180-RA one of the most reliable live transmission systems on the market.
“AVIWEST’s DMNG PRO180-RA solution gave CP Communications a portable, cost-effective, and reliable transmission method for delivering high-definition footage of the women’s wheelchair race to the production crew and on to viewers around the world,” said Jim Jachetta, executive vice president and chief technology officer at VidOvation. “It is a pleasure to work with Jim Malone, Kurt Heitmann, and the CP Communications team on exciting projects such as the NYC Marathon. The broadcast industry is now experiencing bonded cellular reliability at a higher level, and we are proud to represent one of the world’s most reliable bonded cellular systems.”

compression standard. AVIWEST’s live IP video solutions support HEVC, allowing broadcasters to deliver even better video quality at lower bit rates.
AVIWEST’s HE4000 4K Ultra HD HEVC live encoder is ideal for real-time delivery of live UHD or HD content over unmanaged IP networks. The compact, half 1-RU encoder combines 10-bit and 422 HEVC encoding with the latest generation of SafeStreams® technology for delivery of live video content over IP at low latencies and low bitrates.
Thanks to AVIWEST’s SafeStreams® technology, which combines intelligent H-ARQ algorithms with IP bonding mechanisms, the HE4000 ensures the delivery of live video even in the midst of unpredictable and unmanaged network conditions, enabling broadcasters to provide seamless news and sports coverage from any location around the world. By combining HEVC encoding and AVIWEST’s SafeStreams® technology, the HE4000 dramatically reduces bandwidth costs while guaranteeing superior video quality.
Advanced Cloud-Based Live Video IP Contribution
AVIWEST’s live IP contribution system is mainly composed of the DMNG StreamHub

Brick City TV & PayPal Chooses VidOvation’s AVIWEST Bonded Cellular Solution for Live Streaming - VidOvation Blog
Brick City TV Chooses VidOvation’s AVIWEST Bonded Cellular Solution for Live Streaming of PayPal’s ‘Local Selects Live’
LAKE FOREST, Calif. — Aug. 24, 2017 — VidOvation today announced that its AVIWEST bonded cellular technology delivered reliable and low-latency HD video feeds for “Local Selects Live,” a new interactive shopping experience from PayPal that debuted June 4. With an AVIWEST DMNG PRO180 system mounted on the video camera, the show’s roving film crew had the mobility and flexibility it needed to transmit broadcast-quality video and audio from the Melrose Trading Post flea market in Los Angeles.
Billed as PayPal’s first mobile market, “Local Selects Live” gives people around the world the ability to shop like a local from wherever they are, simply using a mobile device. Over the course of the two-hour live streaming event in June, internet personality Leandra Medine visited and interviewed 11 on-site vendors, and home viewers were able to purchase the vendors’ wares using PayPal. Without on-site Wi-Fi or hard-wired capabilities for connecting to the internet, producer Brick City TV had originally planned to use an on-location satellite vehicle to uplink the video feeds from the mobile film crew.
“Late into planning and testing for ‘Local Selects Live,’ we realized that the satellite uplink
AVIWEST DMNG PRO180 Bonded Cellular Live Streaming Link
would not give us the reliability we needed to get our feed online and keep a steady stream throughout the show. After encountering significant problems with the wireless feed from the camera to the truck dropping out, we went back to the drawing board,” said Yoav Attias, producer, Brick City TV. “Then I heard about the AVIWEST solution from a friend who had used it successfully on A&E’s ‘Live PD’ production. After testing the DMNG PRO, we realized we’d found the ideal solution.”
The AVIWEST DMNG PRO 180 uses bonded cellular technology to bond any available combination of network interfaces including local cellular and Wi-Fi networks, Ethernet, and satellite for high-quality and reliable video transmission links. Throughout “Local Selects Live,” the camera-mounted unit transmitted the live, high-quality video back to the control room, where an AVIWEST DMNG StreamHub receiver, decoder, and distribution platform streamed the video online.
“The DMNG PRO was a godsend — it really saved the day for us,” Attias added. “I had been a bit concerned about cellular bandwidth since the flea market has lots of people walking around with their phones and sharing available cellular bandwidth. But from the first second of the shoot, the system performed flawlessly and didn’t drop once. By removing the uncertainties from the technical side, the DMNG PRO allowed the creative side of our program to sing.
“I would not hesitate to recommend this system to other producers, and we plan on using it again in any situation with internet connectivity challenges. Not only was the AVIWEST gear extremely reliable, but it’s a much more cost-effective approach than uplinking to a satellite.”
More information about the AVIWEST DMNG PRO 180 and the full VidOvation product line is available at www.vidovation.com.
