Okay, adding all my scritchy scratchy brain ideas into this~.

In the very beginning, Rook is convinced that Solas is a naughty elf that needs to be taken down.

Just like with the Secret ending, you are required to finish "Regrets of the Dread Wolf". That way Rook gets to understand Solas on a deeper level.

The first two times they meet in the Fade, the humor option gives approval. We all saw that cheeky smirk from Solas with the verbal quips between them. But it's still too early for a flirty option.

Maybe on the third Rook can start with a somewhat flirty move and Solas is absolutely confused and dismissive because he can't understand what he just heard.

The platforms do get closer, but because of the Veil, it can't fully connect. So their romance dates are them sitting as close as they can and talks about the old elvhen stuff, which makes an elf Rook want to reconnect with their old history. Any other race gets more interested about the old elvhen stuff and just wants it back to make Solas happy.

The gift for Solas would be either in the Crossroads or Arlathan Woods, but it's not something you can buy. It's either a hidden item you need to discover or.. a side quest where Rook makes the gift themselves. The handmade gift would change depending on what race Rook is. And you place it in the meditation room.

Way late in the game after the Ghilanain battle, where that cutscene of Rook and Solas happens where they switch places. That reach for the lyrium dagger is somewhat changed if you have locked in romance with Solas. Solas is visibly distraught when his hand grabs the dagger instead of the falling Rook.

Once Rook has confronted their regrets and is out of the Fade prison, a romance moment with freed Solas is available where he is apologetic and they get their first kiss scene where they plan the fake confrontation.

Ending options are still available. The normal fight and trick options will break his heart to pieces. But the romance ending is where Rook and Solas fake their confrontation to get as close as possible to the Veil and as far away from the team. And when in position, they stop briefly and give a knowing smile to each other. Solas holds out the dagger to Rook. Rook grabs onto the dagger too and they both kiss passionately as they stab the Veil together.

... could you imagine if they let you romance Solas if you didn't have a solvellan playthrough (love solvellan too, I just have a preference)

Maybe he's confused at first because why is Rook hitting on him? What? You just stopped him from taking down the veil and now you're flirting with him?? Like. Visible confusion after each time you take the flirtatious dialogue option.

There's a scene where he just. Has to stop you for a minute. Like, after something only vaguely flirtatious and not outright hitting on him was the thing to do it. Was it a longing gaze? A lilt in the voice? Some small change in posture? Either way he's just "... are you... serious? In your flirtations? With- with me of all people?" (Aka your expressing interest scene)

The gift you get for him is somewhere in the Crossroads, since everyone else's is pretty much from their own Faction hq (except Harding, I know I got hers but I don't quite remember where it was)

Supplementary point: maybe the gift for him is like. Really inconsequential. Like maybe it's just a silly little thing like a candle. But there ain't much in the Regret Prison™. It's something

The fact he's in prison does limit us in date options. But consider: the two of you spend some time reflecting on some shit together and/or just celebrating the fact you're still fucking alive. And at some point, you two end up dancing with no music other than each other humming. Maybe the Fade joins in and makes proper music to dance to. I doubt the Regret Prison™ would, but still.

THE PLATFORM YOU STAND ON GETTING CLOSER TO HIS OVER TIME AND IT FULLY COMES TOGETHER WHEN YOU LOCK THAT SHIT IN

... unlock changing your mind and taking the veil down with him? Letting him out early even? Perhaps? Maybe? (Everyone disapproved) (except Solas)

Of course obligatory angst over varric is here somewhere I know but I'm not in the angst mindset rn (feel free to add it tho I will eat it up and thank u for my life)
