i love the scene in iron flame where they all sneak into archives so much. the concept of xaden being dragged into ~Shenanigans~ with vi and her friends (cause he thinks he's supervising, mind you) is gold

also the fact that breaking and entering has now become a sacred bonding tradition in fourth wing flame section's second squad

and also imogen being completely okay with aaric wanting xaden dead — even though the reason for aaric's grudge is xaden saving garrick's ass

i think bodhi at least was involved, since he helped alter andarna's harness in the beginning of IF. xaden was probably getting her and tairn's measurements alone though, i think he's the only one they tolerate getting that close (especially since tairn almost incinerated him at least once during the whole thing)

maybe garrick helped, but liam was for sure too busy watching violet and writing his letters to sloane. and i imagine everyone else in xaden's immediate circle (sgaeyl included) was just laughing from the sidelines at what a loser loverboy he'd turned into

exactly!! and that's why it just didn't sit right with me that he said that, and it's what i held against him the most bc i just couldn't understand.

but literally from day ONE he was bending and breaking the rules by trying to find ways to get violet out of the quadrant (and going so far as to ask markham for help! imagine the risk if markham had decided to report him). he made sure violet AND rhiannon were both put in his squad.

and really, what was he supposed to say to xaden in that moment? we as readers know that xaden wouldn't have held it against dain had he said he would've helped violet, but dain definitely didn't know that. from dain's pov, he as a squad leader admitting to the evil wingleader that he would break the codex for violet would be a terrible idea for both him and vi.

i'm very convinced this is what actually happened. we already know that violet is a bit of an unreliable narrator. and she was already resenting dain for making her feel like a liability in the quadrant instead of his partner in crime, so it was pretty easy for her to believe he'd save himself over her when it really came down to it. but it just doesn't make sense for that to actually be the case

and i'll also save my own essay on the "he treats vi like she's weak" argument bc that genuinely IS a whole essay on why it's unfair and hypocritical

i can't believe i'm only just now thinking of this, but what if dain lied about not being willing to save violet at threshing bc he didn't want to admit to xaden — his wingleader — about any possibility of him ever breaking the codex? especially not where violet's involved. and especially when he had just been accusing xaden of the very same thing

xaden had his shield up through the whole convo so he wasn't reading him, and he not only expected dain's answer but wanted it, so he wouldn't have thought to question it. but unfortunately for dain, violet believed it too

it also explains dain's attempt at damage control later on, cause he tells violet "You have to know that I would do anything to save you, Violet, to keep you safe" but vi doesn't really give him a chance to finish
