i have a sort of similar experience op, when i got into fandom and especially my current fandom i was mostly surrounded by antis and anti rhetoric, and i think i always felt more proship myself but struggled to accept that because of the company i was surrounded by. i also struggle interacting with the proship comnunity because a lot of what proshippers post im not interested in (or im actively uncomfortable with). my main "problematic" (i put in quotations because i really dont see it as problematic) are toxic relationships, because i like to see the angst. i also dont like interacting with minors online

Ok after looking more into the topic outside of an anti-centric community.. I guess I'd call myself proship. It's a label I've been avoiding using for myself simply because of the stigma that comes with it. I have no interest in any characters under the age of 19, but I'm still worried about accusations of being a/condoning pedophiles. Like.. not really for me. My interest is in toxic relationships between characters who met as adults or are the same age when they met as children. If anything, maybe a character who resembles a shota at most.

I just don't think it's very productive to have this sort of conversation. If you think that the media you absorb should influence the way you behave around others/treat others in real life, by treating them like sex objects or toys, then you already had those thoughts in your mind, you were already willing, the media had nothing to do with it.

Yes, there are bad apples, there will always be in any community.. but I will say, here, on tumblr, every single "proshippers please interact" post has been people defending themselves with entirely rational and reasonable arguments, and also, incredibly comforting and reassuring.. when I last saw this discourse in 2021-22, the way BOTH sides of the argument were presented to me was bad. I thought proshippers were only pedophiles and incest fetishists, again, both things I'm not interested in. I thought antis were a giant hate campaign mostly sent towards minors healing from trauma(I still kind of believe this actually).

Why even read fiction if you want censorship..? That's the beauty of fiction, anything can happen to anyone, because it isn't real.

I wasn't around on the old internet or really part of fandom, but I very much believe in the philosophy of "don't like, don't read", "dead dove: do not eat", and "ship and let ship". There are ships I don't approve of, I just block the tag. It's very easy to do that. Your internet is YOUR curated experience, that is what the block button is for! Use it!! It's so useful and FUN to push the block button !!

I only started thinking about proshipping again because I got on toyhouse for artfight this year, and realized that people take it very seriously on there, I've seen several people on blacklists just for being pro-fiction.

The last time I tried to explore the topic, I was dealing with a bad breakup and recovering from being assaulted, but the type of content I ended up seeing from other proshippers at the time made me deeply uncomfortable- I just think I ended up in a not great pocket of them, I try not to hold it against people.. I've just been a bit hesitant to enter proship spaces sense then.

I'd really like to join proship spaces and conversations, but.. as a a personal preference, I prefer not to speak to minors on the internet. I've been having trouble finding only 18+ spaces..

Anyways.. enough yapping I guess.
