We continue to see lots of excitment and interest in desktop virtualization with VMware View 5. One of the hot topics coming out of VMworld 2011 in Las Vegas are the many performance improvements found in View 5. Cisco is collaborating with Microsoft to bring its virtual switch to Hyper-V next year when Windows Server 8 is released. While Cisco’s Nexus 1000V distributed virtual switch already supports VMware software, Hyper-V in Windows Server 2008 R2 does not get the same love. The new support for Hyper-V will only apply to the forthcoming Windows Server 8, which introduces greater ability to integrate third-party modules than its predecessor, according to Cisco.

Why would one want to run nested ESXi 5? Because of the flexibility of such a solution. You can add more NICs to your “virtual ESXi”, more storage (just add another hard disk…), and more. For testing this solution is one of the most common, because you can use the desktop for anything else than just running a VMware Workstation and couple of VMs….

vSphere 5 revealed around 150 new features many of which are still to be understood. The new storage features however, got plenty of publicity. I have been involved in many VDI designs over the past years, and recently I have been involved in a design and architecture for a 10,000 user VDI solution. I thought it would be interesting to share here the considerations and decisions that goes behind hardware definition for such a large project. In an unusual move, VMware has given us a twofer and updated both its desktop flagship products today. VMware is releasing VMmware Workstation 8 for Windows and Linux, and VMware Fusion 4 for Mac users. The Fusion update makes Fusion "more Mac-like" and finally allows users to virtualize Mac OS X under VMware Fusion. Workstation 8 is aimed squarely at developers and professionals working cloud and virtualization deployments, with remote access to virtual machines and support for up to 64GB of RAM.

Veeam Software is preparing to enhance its virtual server backup software with increased scalability for enterprise use, support for Microsoft Hyper-V, one-click failover and file restores. Although Veeam Backup & Replication 6 won’t ship until later this year, the vendor today disclosed details of the product.

VMware View 5.0 introduces 32-bit color depth and makes it the default option. On top of that, to allow 3D support, VMware introduced a new feature in View 5.0 that allow administrators to select how much video RAM should be assigned to virtual desktops.

Some time back I wrote a blog post on enhancements to Storage vMotion in vSphere 5.0. One of these enhancements included the ability to Storage vMotion a Virtual Machine which had snapshots. Previously this was something we couldn't do, and was something a lot of customers were requesting, so this was a very welcome feature in vSphere 5.0. And Storage DRS with Virtual Machines that have snapshots also works, which is really cool.
