YEAR 3- POSTER DESIGN
Brief:Create an A3 poster using a software package of your choice for each of these subjects:Inspirational design piece.Artist/designer
My inspiration design piece was lipstick because it is the most popular cosmetic product in the history of cosmetics. It has been used for centuries and is always being engineered to be better for the future
I chose Jessica Walsh as my inspirational designer because she creates funky designs with a feminist twist. They have humour and are clean, simple and bright.

YEAR 3-LOGO DESIGN
Brief:A logo communicating an allocated partner’s design ethics.
Emily has a classy style but always fun fresh vibe. For her logo I took inspiration from the fashion brand coach (font style) and combined it with a feminine colour palette in order to give it a youthful appearance.

ADVERT MOCKUP- LEATHER BAG

This design...I don’t like so much. I used the same font and stylings as all the other designs but it looks way too plain. The circle design i added might look nice on it’s own with the Trashion logo. The bag looks too busy to me and isn’t the minimalist approach I was trying to achieve.
The circles don’t really go with my Trashion theme either. Trashion uses big photos with muted colours and adding a photo to this would just be a no.

ADVER MOCKUPS- WALL POSTER

For this poster design, I kept everything the same as the last advert except changed the picture and it’s orientation to landscape.
Although the background of the photo is pastel and very light, the white still stands out. It looks like its almost part of the water. I decided to take the landscape version and flip it on its side. That way people will walk by and the big block letters catch their eye and they’ll have to turn their heads to read it. That means they will take the time to look at the poster.
The lack of any borders or frames makes the photo stand out and look bigger and creates a fuller look to the eye (if that makes sense). The white font against the blue background makes the poster feel peaceful.

ADVERT MOCKUPS- BILLBOARD

For this advert brief, I decided to add a cheeky saying to make viewers curious. What is it they don’t know? I kept the font Avenir as per, and kept the words either centred or in a corner. That way people will be able to easily read what is on the advert without getting to distracted.
The words and the photo have perfect balance. Black against white and vice versa also provide a universal aesthetic that is classic. The polar opposites also increase readability. It is a simple, minimalistic design. I almost feel bad again for making this because it only took me a short amount of time to do. But it fits with the magazine as well as the website.

WEB MOCKUPS- IMAC TRASHION ARTICLE

For my desktop version of one of my articles, I used one i created which was a poll. I stuck with the style of minimalism as per. The title of the magazine remains black and white because it is off the homepage. All the font is Avenir and it’s different versions.
You can find social media links at the bottom left corner as well as copyright sign on the bottom right. Because I found that the small links in the bottom centre would have ruined the homepage’s simplicity, I decided to add them when there is an article or when the viewer scrolls down.
For this mockup i feel like i should have made the TRASHION logo bigger and maybe added an advertisement to the page. It would look a lot more realistic with ads at the bottom or the side.

IOS MOCKUPS-ARTICLE AND HOMEPAGE

I created an IOS version of Trashion Magazine. I wanted to keep the theme I had on the Desktop version of the website that the homepage has different photos of the day and that sets the color scheme for the homepage. Social media links will stay on the homepage to keep the app neat and clutter free.
When clicking on one of the links it will turn black with white font. The font stays Avenir throughout the entirety of the app to remain consistent and keep the minimal design. I decided to keep it in a grid like format with lines sectioning off different aspects of the homepage. This gives the readers’ eyes a visually pleasing and easy app to navigate.
When the reader scrolls down it will come up with the most recent stories rather than having to search for it through the topic links. It will show the reader at the top what section they’re in and will give them an option to click on the “Trashion Magazine” link to go back to the home page.Or they have the option to click the topic link to read more articles in that topic.

WEB MOCKUPS- HOMEPAGE: SAFARI PAGE AND MACBOOK

Relating to the magazine’s theme, I created a minimalist web page that was easy to navigate and visually pleasing.
In my idea I thought that the website would have a photo of the day kind of thing. So the homepage’s colour scheme would change with the photo. I decided on pink for the mock up because it’s my favourite colour and brings out the feminine side of the magazine. It also looks very peaceful and calming when you look at the photo.
The colour scheme would be white, black, and the main colour off the photo of the day. The social media links I added in the bottom right corner will also change to fit the colour scheme of the day.
Everything on the page is written in some form of Avenir which relates tot he magazine and it is obviously the magazine’s website. I also added the photo credit on the bottom right corner of the photo as well as a copyright on the bottom left corner of the safari page.
In conclusion, I feel like I didn’t work on this design hard enough. I though of it and designed it in maybe 15-20 minutes. But it looks like it relates to the magazine really well. I could have done better with the links and I struggled to centre the word “fashion”.

TRASHION MAGAZINE

For one of the production days, we were asked to create a magazine called TRASHION.
In my vision, I wanted to create a magazine that was beautiful and aesthetically pleasing. I wanted to use pastel colours and simple text. I basically wanted it to be a minimalist theme.
I started with the cover, I sed Avenir Heavy and only kept the outline for the word “TRASH”. It helps outline what the magazine is about and makes the reader realise the play on words. Since Avenir has any different type kits, i could use it several times in several ways and still keep a consistent look.
In my articles I used a simple grid plan and only broke the text with pull quotes and photos because I didn’t want too much going on. The magazine is meant to be minimal.
There’s a lot of things I was a little sloppy with such as making sure the word “TRASH” in any title text was italicised. As well as entering photos and making sure the colours were visible as some of them blended with each other too much.

GRID CASE STUDY 2- i-D Mag

Looking at the left page, you can see that whoever designed the page really focused on the grinding aspect of it. All the pictures and columns look almost like a puzzle. The designer clearly uses 3 different columns to create this page but their choice of sizing and placement makes it look like the reader will read less but in reality he’s added more to read.
The designer uses different sized columns and pictures to create small sections that line up with each other and create columns. ALTHOUGH you can argue that he breaks the grid in the bottom right corner’s section as it doesn’t line up with the second column’s lines.
Each photo’s frame is sized up to match either the height or the width of the column creating a aesthetically pleasing page.

GRID CASE STUDY 1- Dazed & Confused Mag

Dazed & Confusedis an independent youth culture magazine and the way they design their article shows it. In this article, it uses a 2 page photo spread. The photos are black and white but then they ad 2 columns smack in the centre of the photos adding not only colour but a focal point.
The first column carries the actual writing. It blocks out the face, implying that the writing will explain what the person is meant to represent. The subheadings are red and bolded to section off the article and make it easier to read.
The second column is only an asymmetrical, sheer, red rectangle. But this makes the spread look balanced and get well with the red subheadings.

REAL BEACH-Grids

For this brief we were asked to design an article using a pre-written story and use grids to create the design. I chose the real beach article as there is already a colour scheme I could use to relate to it. Pale blues, sea greens, and corals all relate to the beach. I used the font Avenir because its a simple and modern font that’s easy to read.
The story seemed a little long to me so instead of dividing it into 3 columns I used the third to add the time of the article. The other two I compacted into two columns and adde the photo on top to fill out the 2nd and 3rd column.
To break the grid and make it seem like there’s less reading, I added a pull quote ad placed it in the centre of the page. I made it coral because it pops out i contrast to the blue and green. I chose that certain quote to make readers want to know what they were doing on the beach, therefore wanting to read the article.
On the photo itself I placed a coral frame around it. This adds another pop of colour and gives a border to distinguish between the text and the photo. It helps keep the reader’s eyes from blurring between lines or getting distracted.

Colour Case Study #2
The Tabasco hot sauce is a very famous brand of hot sauce that is well known for its label.
It’s colour scheme is red and green. Red represents power, heat, and energy. It summons a strong emotional reaction from the consumer and red is known for making people hungry. Hence why so many fast food chains use red in their logos (i.e. Mcdonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut etc.).
Green is used to represent (in this case), freshness and nature. Since the sauce is made exclusively with natural ingredients. It is a soothing contrast compared to the vibrant red. It may also be that they want to portray themselves as eco-friendly.

Colour Case Study #1

The Facebook logo and website have very simple colour schemes. They are white, grey, and blue.
Blue is used as a calming colour, representing serenity and helping curb appetite. It keeps the users calm and undistracted. in fact, a majority of social media websites use blue as their main colour swatch (i.e. Twitter, Tumblr, etc.).
Blue is a non-threatening colour and creates a sense of security and trust for the user. It is one of the most popular colours to use for logo design in government and Fortune 500 companies (i.e. NHS, IBM etc.).
The white is used to fill the negative spaces and is a universal colour that represents purity and cleanliness. It often pairs well with most colour palettes as well.

ACID RAP ALBUM ART
Original Album Art:

My Redo:

Rough Draft:

Because we were working with colour this week, I also decided to use Chance the Rapper’s best album Acid Rap for this brief. I used a colour wheel because his voice and music are colourful and vibrant and aesthetically pleasing. It also resembles a CD and the eye in the middle resembles looking into the future.
As I was writing this I literally remembered that his newest album is called “Coloring Book” and I probably should've used that album instead of Acid rap but Acid Rap is so much better.
I began my rough draft loving the pattern and ended up hating it, I thought it was way too busy and looked way too childish. I was originally aiming for a retro 80′s trippy pattern but couldn’t find an inspiration to finish it so I scrapped it.

Photo Case Study #2 This pic

This is a very powerful photo that’s very simple but sends a powerful message. Written on this girl’s leg is are remarks normally made regarding the length of a woman’s skirt (or shorts).
It shows how judgemental society is and how common it is to hear those things just because of what someone is wearing. It also relays a message that women will wear anything and still be criticised. It gives the viewer something to think about.
Almost every girl who sees this picture will be able to relate to what is written on that girl’s leg. its a symbol of what women go through in society today.
