Saw a post about villains who love their wives but also villains who love their husbands and that made me think of a lady villain who is big bad and terrifying and meanwhile her husband is just this pathetic man. Just a sad wet kitten of a man. He probably wears sweater vests and big glasses. And she LOVES him. That is the love of her life. A McDonald’s is on a fire because he asked for no pickles and they didn’t listen damnit. She would kill for this absolute fucking loser. The wind could knock him over but it’s okay because she’ll be there to catch him.

It is night. Is it the same one as when you began watching? You do not know. Perhaps a day, or more, has passed on the other side of your curtains since then. It does not matter. You are one third of the way through the women’s free skate.

Ted Barton informs you that the skater in the Kiss & Cry seems happy with their score. They do not look happy, but you are no longer confident in your ability to judge human emotions. At least this one is wearing a mask.

The last seven skaters have performed to precisely the same cut of the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. When the music started for the fourth, you briefly considered devoting your life to the eradication of all audiovisual technology. That urge has passed, now, and you have accepted the situation. You will wait until it is over, or perhaps it will never be over. On the screen, you think you catch a glimpse of Ewan McGregor sitting in the stands. He appears to be weeping. “Roxannnne,” you sing to your cats, idly. An eighth skater takes position, wearing black with red trim. The first note of the strings brings you peace: there is a quiet joy in an entirely predictable universe.

You attempt to skip the warmup, in hopes of going to sleep at some point in the future. The video is so long that you cannot choose a time with any finesse. Oddly, when you give up it returns to precisely where you left off.

Ted reads emails from viewers aloud. One asks how he maintains energy and concentration when commentating for so many hours. He laughs, hollowly, for a very long time. You laugh with him.

It is time for the final group. Instead of listing any names, the screen simply shows the Russian flag for several seconds. You decide that this is a little rude to the Canadian–or perhaps American, or Korean–skater who is in the group, but accurate enough overall.

The event is over. You return to the JGP YouTube page, and wait. There will be more.
