brief history of the kerem
the Kerem was a new area that started off the new city of Tel Aviv beyond the Jaffa Port which was already thriving at the time. when they Temanim (Yemenites) settled in the neighborhood they organized their own marketplace which was they called “HaKerem”. this turned the small neighborhood into a commercial center and eventually the name of the market was changed into Shuk HaCarmel which has continuously been growing in success. Up until today, it has consistently been one of the best places to get local and fresh produce. the municipality of Tel Aviv even tried to move the Shuk to a more central location but the locals didn’t want to lose their roots and wished to protect the intimate and authentic charm of the neighborhood.

Quote
Walking around the Kerem is a little like entering another Tel Aviv – or maybe not Tel Aviv at all. A very different atmosphere that feels apart from the rest of the city – some streets quiet and residential, but others loud and filled with people from all over the world.

a journey around the kerem
as we go down the kerem, we will see how the once historic place – a home to yemenite jews – has turned into one of the most unique and chic neighborhoods in tel aviv. filled with art, foreigners, cheap food and living, people gravitate towards the kerem for a simpler life in a beautiful and charming neighborhood.
