Gathering more secondary research
Working with shadow, human form and light. I see similarities with my own body of work, obscuring the background with shadow in the foreground. I think shadow is an interesting medium to choose because it can become quite whimsical and playful, reminding me of shadow puppets in some sense.

Augmented Shadow - Inside on Vimeo
Very liminal space inspired, strange atmosphere created through use of sound and animation. Moving shadows, use of human form to create a familiarity to viewer. I like work that makes you feel uncomfortable/ on edge and allows you the space to question mortality and the space between us.

"Light and space are in an inseparable but invisible connection (theory of relativity)."
Very concept-focused work, a desire to make viewer uncomfortable with an interactive light installation. Again, forces the viewer to question their reality and state, taking away familiarities between space and light.

Artist Statement + Final 10 Images
When considering the index brief, I began looking at shadow and ways in which I could manipulate light to produce various forms. Following this, I experimented with ‘drawing using unconventional mediums such as presence of light, movement, colour and space. Using a range of disciplines that I am unfamiliar with e.g. glass, bone china and installation type sculpture. I wanted to challenge myself in order to progress my own skill set throughout the module.

‘Drawing’ with glass shards attached to human form.
As previously used, I wanted to make use of the left over glass and attach it to my hands/arms and make repetitive movements to 'draw' with the ink-dipped fragments. Wanting to explore movement, this worked successfully in doing so. Another thing to note is the sound created from the fragments colliding with each other, if I were to further develop with sound/vide work this would be something to consider.
I think the glass fragments themselves, all bunched up and attached to string, makes an interesting sculpture piece. I could see this done on a larger scale hanging up as an installation.

Ink on canvas shadow painting
More shadow painting with additional use of colour, incorporating some of the 3D glass sculptures which I traced from the shadows themselves. Again, using my own form linking back to the original Draw2Perform videos I was inspired by at the very beginning. Using my profile, hands and development work to make the composition busy and unnatural.

Projection Development
Using video projection to further develop 2D and 3D work. I projected some previous moving image/GIF work onto the glass panels as their transparency makes it easy to overlap other imagery onto.
I tried to maintain consistency with the forms, sticking to angular and geometric shapes. Again, focusing on the shadows and reflections as result of the projector acting as the primary light source.

Stained glass inspired development
I wanted to further my use of the glass panels I had, since the acrylic inks had worked well on the miniature fragments. I decided to follow the geometric shapes, sourced from previous developments and replicate some of the patterns.
I really like the shadows that these panels cast, using paint to outline the shapes made the projections sharper and cleaner. I intend for the two panels to overlap each other to create dimension and layer up the colours and forms. Almost like a sculpture.

Hanging/Installation of glass fragment sculptures
Main objective and point of this development is experimenting with how I can introduce colour into shadow and manipulate them in an abstract way to cast reflections onto the surrounding area. Next step would be to introduce video projection and cast onto the glass to see what comes of this.

Experimenting with acetate- pressence vs absence of light source
Taking inspiration from folded forms, 2D into 3D workshops.
Seeking out other materials which share similar values e.g transparency, light is able to reach through to highlight the difference between the presence and absence of it. An experiment in the varying ways you can use light e.g as an outward source, casting light to make objects visible vs a directed, inward source where the object is lit up from the inside. Thus creating a glowing sculpture, with the acetate allowing light to pour through in some areas.

Glass Sculptures
Gluing the assortment of glass fragments together to create small and delicate sculptures. The symmetry from the shadow makes them resemble butterflies/dragonflies in a way, with the fragments appearing as wings. This development turned out as I had hoped, next steps include making a hanging installation with them as i did the bone china. Perhaps introducing projection and movement.

Fragmented glass- dyed and painted pieces.
In order to introduce colour into my shadow-based work, I chose glass as a medium to work with. Due to its transparency, I knew that any colour would reflect off of the fragments and create vibrant shadows. Using ink and acrylic was most effective, i made a variety of these stain glass-like pieces. To develop this further, I intend to create mini sculptures to possibly hang up or install.

Development of ‘shadow drawing’, use of own form.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Continuation and development of ‘shadow drawing’
Using my own form as the subject matter as I did before when creating folded forms. Layering of my hands, arms, profile and glass fragments to make a cohesive composition.
The purpose of this was to explore the indexical nature of shadow and the importance of light. In a sense, shadows are 'drawn' due to the presence of light and this is something I wanted to explore further in my developments.

Gathering secondary artist research
Amir Mogharabi works with similar materials that I gravitated towards when exploring the brief; glass, reflective surfaces, fragmented materials.
Mogharabi’s work explores these tensions between an object and its life- including all the lies in between.
Amir Mogharabi: A stone’s throw | Bidoun
What intrigued me about Mogharabi's working practice is his intuitive pursuit when working with different mediums, he states that he works with what feels right, rather than working to fit a certain concept. I work similarly, often choosing materials on a whim and experimenting with them of my own accord. I think this way of creating is often overlooked, outwith any constraints or confines .

Painting on acetate- to be developed from 2D into 3D

Making multiples from acrylic, acetate and tiny fragments of bone china to give texture. I would like to explore presence vs absence of light as I develop these into a 3D sculpture piece.

Digital overlay developments
Introduction of colour, digital manipulation to plan this out for next developments. I want to use materials like acetate or something similar to project colourful shadows onto the walls and experiment with that. I'm interested in 'drawing' with unusual mediums such as, light, movement, colour etc. Presence vs absence of light is also a focal point I intent to take forward. Also, liminal spaces are of interest; the uncertain transition between where you've been and where you're going, this can be physical, emotional, or metaphorical.

Exploring light, shadow, dimension and colour through use of household objects and opaque materials. There are arguably elements of post-modernism found in Alakbarov's work as he explores the relationship between sign and meaning, in some of his text based worked.

Hanging Instillation/mobile
Attaching the bone china pieces together to create small sculptures and then attaching strings to create a small-scale installation. Creating GIF from shadows moving erratically. Angular, sharp shadows created- works well.
Next step developments: use of projector, introducing colour and light. I would also like to expand on use of installation-type work. Using glass, perspex and acetate would work well for exploring further. I like combining use of colour, shadow and light to experiment with negative and subliminal space.
