      anything. she hears his words, and she knows he means them, but somehow it still doesn’t feel true. there are some things that are too hard to say. things that if said out loud. . . well they become real, and you can’t take them back.

           “ mare, hey mary, wait up a second! ”  lily’s voice echoed louder than she had intended off the stone walls of the corridor, as she called after the familiar mess of brunette hair in gryffindor robes she could see ahead of her. she hurried toward the other girl, readjusting her hold on the books and parchment spilling out from under her arm.  “ so i’m not naming names, but apparently i slept in this morning and no one in the dorm thought to themselves: ‘huh, strange, lily isn’t at breakfast, maybe we should check if she’s okay’.  —   so i’ve decided you’re all on temporary friendship probation. ”

as she was speaking, her stomach growled, a wave of hunger washing over her.        “ you know, i might consider early parole if you possibly have any leftovers from breakfast. ”

          « no, it’s fine. » his smile was warm, though he still looked a bit baffled. this had been a lot, he could not deny that, and especially with the amount of sleep he’d missed mending people’s wounds all night long he felt like he would take a while to respond to all of this. but, the thing was, he got it— he got her. so much it almost hurt.

          he brought his cup to his lip and took a sip of the tea he’d made for the both of them. only then he spoke again. « i get it— i mean, this is the only break i’ll get for hours. » not that he could complain— it was mostly his fault he was this restless, and he was fairlysure lily must feel somewhat similar. « and it’s tiring trying to find people who listen to these things when everyone’s busy trying to prevent your woes from happening in the first place— right?unfortunately there isn’t a cure against it, just— enjoying the moments of calm, i suppose. and drinking your relaxing tea. »

she let out a breath she hadn’t even realised she was holding, the muscles in her face relaxing ever so slightly. she hadn’t meant to make herself so vulnerable in this moment, to speak her thoughts so freely. but ted is kind, and she is beyond thankful that he doesn’t appear bothered by her spontaneous barrage of words.

    “ the tea helps, you’re certainly right about that… ”

she absentmindedly swirled the spoon in her cup, the occasional soft *clink* ringing out as it hit the porcelain sides, before lifting it to her mouth to drink. the warm tea offered her a comforting feeling not dissimilar to ted’s understanding and warming presence.

          “ and for what it’s worth, i’m sorry for interrupting your hard earned break. i know peace is difficult to come by at the moment. but it’s always nice to have a friendly ear, someone who understands. ”   she offered him a soft smile, as if hoping to convey her thankfulness with her expression.  “ has it been a particularly rough shift or just … ”  her voice trailed off, “ more of the usual horrors? ”
