that poll is a good example as to why the term 'player sexual' actually does serve a necessary purpose in discussing video games.
I'm sorry but Skyrim did not intend their marriageable NPCs to be bisexual. They just didn't gender gate anything and kept it open to all players. Cause it's easier, cause they wanted all players to be able to do what they want, or cause they didn't think about it, who knows? Doesn't really matter. But they aren't bisexual or pansexual. They have no sexuality besides 'people with cool necklace.' aka. the player.
This isn't a problem. It isn't a bad thing. It's also not a bad thing for people to consider these characters bisexual, at all, of course it's fucking not! Mechanically speaking, they have been diagnosed with bisexuality, ya know?
But there's a difference between those situations, and, say, when the creators intentionally set out to make all romanceable characters Bi. Again, whether they were motivated by genuine interest to provide that rep, or just to make it easier for them, or just to stop fan complaints, it doesn't matter. Practically, it all ends up in the same place. With characters who are bisexual, for whom their sexuality is a part of them, and was considered when making them. It wasn't something that was just a non issue entirely.
We are getting the second of these two more and more in modern games, that's good! I'm glad if people are going to go down the open for all player options route that they're doing it with thought and intent!
I completely get why people hate the term when it's levelled at characters who are just fucking bi. BG3 or Veilguard, for example. That's trash, that's hot fucking garbage move to the sewer behavior. And because of that, I get people being wary when they see the term used, but it works to make an interesting distinction in handling. If there's an alternative one, I'd genuinely want to hear it.
#and like personally speaking - in reference to the poll - i prefer a diversity of npc identity in narrative and character driven games but -#especially since i imagine it's more difficult to navigate programming and handling that shit when offering more gender options -#a crew of intentionally designed as bisexual characters is awesome#especially vs the alternative of sexualities feeling disconnected and unimportant to the character and it more being a mechanical thing#if that makes any sense
