“A peek in the life of a Kolehiyala”
by: Arabila Concepcion
College is often seen as a time of growth and opportunity, but it can also be a time of struggle for many students. From financial challenges to academic pressures, college students face a wide range of difficulties that can make their college experience more difficult than they anticipated. Questions such as, “What specific challenges do they face in a daily basis?”, “How do they cope?”, “Are there still any doubts on the field they’ve taken?”, “What are their study habits?” are often being asked to them. So, to crack the coconuts, I have interviewed two students with different lifestyle, habits, and timeline in attending school and made a comparison. From the right is Joyce Sevillo (21F), a student boarder, and Grace Ann Pedarios (20F), a commuter student. Both students are taking up Bachelor in Secondary Education and majoring in Social Studies at Sultan Kudarat State University-Access Campus.

(from the right to the left: Grace Ann Pedarios and Joyce Sevillo)
As a student who commutes from Isulan to the campus of SKSU-ACCESS, Grace often wake up early in the morning between 4 am to 5 am just to get ready for school. Then she’ll ride a university-owned coaster vehicle to get to the university. Commuting actually exhausts her energy, so she usually feels sleepy everytime she attended her classes. On the other hand, the boarding student, Joyce wake up much later than Grace as she is living in a rental place near the university. To get ready for school, she needs to wait for her turn to use their rental house’s comfort room and kitchen as these facilities were also used by her co-boarders. After all that, she’ll walk to school 15 minutes before her classes’ starts. The two clearly had different ways of living as a student. The difficulties are clearly identifiable. For Grace, Commuting to school as a student can be a daunting task, and one that comes with its own set of challenges. From long travel times to the financial burden of transportation costs, it's easy to see why commuting can be a source of stress for many students. One of the most significant difficulties of commuting as a student is the amount of time it can take, which can cut into study and leisure time. Another significant difficulty of commuting as a student is the cost. For students who are already struggling to make ends meet, transportation expenses can be a significant burden. The cost of gas, parking, and public transportation can add up quickly, leaving students with less money to spend on books, food, or other essentials. Moreover, students who live far from campus may need to pay for additional transportation, such as a shuttle or taxi service. All of these expenses can be overwhelming, particularly for students who are already dealing with financial difficulties.

While, for Joyce, Living in a boarding house as a student can be a challenging experience. Boarding houses offer a unique living arrangement for students, providing them with a sense of independence and responsibility. However, with this independence and responsibility come struggles that can be difficult to manage. The lack of privacy and personal space can be a significant struggle for students living in boarding houses. In a boarding house, students often share rooms or living spaces with other students. This means that they have limited privacy and may not have personal space to themselves. Additionally, students may not have the freedom to decorate their living space in a way that suits their preferences, which can be frustrating. The lack of privacy and personal space can make it difficult for students to relax and focus on their studies, which can impact their academic performance.

When asked about the specific challenges that they often faced, both of them answered; Financial issues, Time-management, Academic pressure, Mental and Physical Health Issues, and keeping up with social life. They cope up by planning their schedule in advance, talking to their peers, distracting themselves with social media or through watching kdramas, animes or tiktoks. They’re also doing some side jobs to help financially support themselves.
As I was writing this blog, I have reflected something on myself (as I am also a struggling college student) that as you navigate through your college years, you might find yourself facing various challenges, ranging from academic pressure to financial difficulties. These struggles can be overwhelming, leaving you feeling unmotivated and unsure of your goals. It is not uncommon to feel that you have lost your sense of direction and purpose. In such times, we need first, to start by identifying our purpose. You should reflect on why you enrolled in college in the first place, what inspired you to pursue your degree, and what you hope to achieve in the long term. This may include academic achievements, career aspirations, personal growth, or social impact. By identifying your purpose, you can begin to reconnect with your values and goals. Secondly, acknowledge your struggles. Recognizing your challenges honestly and openly can be liberating. It can also help you gain perspective and identify ways to overcome them. It is crucial to remember that everyone has setbacks and obstacles, and what matters is how you choose to respond to them. Thirdly, seek support. Reaching out to professors, counselors, or peers can be an invaluable source of support. They can provide you with guidance, feedback, and encouragement. Additionally, consider joining a student group or club that aligns with your interests or passions. This can help you form connections and build a sense of community. Fourthly, take small steps towards achieving your goals. Instead of focusing on the big picture, break down your goals into manageable action points. This can help you feel more in control and motivated. Celebrate even the smallest victories along the way Finally, practice self-care. This includes taking care of your physical health, such as getting enough sleep, exercising, and eating well. It also means taking care of your mental and emotional well-being through activities such as meditation, journaling, or spending time with loved ones. I hope that you will something that can be a powerful tool to help you regain your focus and enthusiasm. By reflecting on your purpose, acknowledging your struggles, seeking support, taking small steps, and practicing self-care, you can overcome any challenges that come your way. Remember that you are not alone, and that with determination and effort, you can achieve your goals and reach your full potential.

Best Milktea in Koronadal? Hmm?
Milktea is a trendy drink nowadays specifically to the teenagers. My hometown , Koronadal City, is also keeping up with the trend. Cafes are popping out evereywhere in the city because of people making money out of it.

( picture above: Okinawa Milktea)
Temp-tea-tion's Milktea stood out among the rest. It has a full five-star ratings from their satisfied customers. So, I went there to try the milktea personally. I ordered the Temp-tea-tion's bestseller, the Okinawa Milktea. The presentation is so cute and very appetizing. It's caramel sweetness overloaded my nerves at one sip. Adjusting to its taste is hard, especially if you had tasted it for the first time. The milk, tea and the caramel are blended perfectly. The tapioca was not overcooked nor undercooked which I really loved about it. Now I know why it had received five stars from the Koronadaleños. Temp-tea-tion's milktea is really the best milktea in the city.  Although, Okinawa Milktea is the café's bestseller, I recommend that you should try these two; If you love oreos, you should try Oreo Milktea and for coffee-lovers out there, Coffee Milktea is one of the must-try milkteas in the café.

You can find the Temp-tea-tion café near the Koronadal City's Rizal Park and they also have a branch in Odi street beside McCoy's Rib joint.
