Week 12 Compulsory Question 2
For week 10, I wrote my vision statement. I wrote down the answer to question 4 because it was funny. The comments from classmates were all encouraging, and I was deeply inspired by a comment about having a goal. Setting goals helps you improve both your personal and professional life. Think of it like a beacon: It helps guide you toward the best version of yourself. For example, improving your self-motivation through goal setting could make it easier to focus at work and help you land that promotion you’ve had your eye on. This comment made me reflect on my own goals and how I approach my future.
Tumblr media
One of my main goals is to become a graphic designer at a large company, a goal I plan to achieve within five years after graduation. During this time, I aim to deepen my skills, understand industry operations, and gain real-world experience. Working in a large company will allow me to learn from professionals and establish a solid foundation for my career. However, I don’t plan to stay in this role forever. I value personal freedom and want to eventually start my own company, especially in packaging or the food industry. I believe owning a business will not only give me more autonomy but also provide greater financial freedom.
While thinking about my goals, an experience I had recently came to mind. A classmate and I were shopping at Paris Baguette and noticed the beautifully designed packaging of a floral tea. We bought the product simply because of its appealing design. This made me realize my strong interest in packaging design, especially food packaging and promotional posters. I find joy in food’s aesthetic appeal, and combining that passion with design excites me. I want to create packaging that not only looks beautiful but also tells a story and enhances the product's appeal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Currently, I’m preparing to transfer schools. During my gap year, I want to make sure I use my time productively. I plan to gain hands-on experience through internships, ideally with a food company or in any field related to packaging design or marketing. This will help me understand industry trends and move closer to my career aspirations. I’ve also noticed that my art lacks depth, and I want to improve my thick painting technique to add shading and texture to my work.
My illustration work:
I want to learn:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Looking ahead, I also want to improve my proficiency with various design software. I plan to dedicate time to mastering tools that will make my work more polished. My current courses are focused on packaging and brand design, and I’m excited to continue refining my abilities. Through consistent effort, I believe I will achieve my professional goals and contribute creatively to the design world.

Week 11 -Compulsory Question 1
In today's class, the teacher asked us to create a personal manifesto. Initially, I didn’t fully understand the task, so I asked two classmates. One suggested "think less, do more," and the other said "have fun and be economical." After reflecting, I realized my biggest issue is procrastination and a lack of deep thinking.
Although I’ve been at school for three semesters, looking back, I realize almost none of my assignments left me satisfied. The issue wasn’t my ability, but a lack of focus and planning. I often complete assignments hastily because I procrastinate, leaving no time for deep thinking or proper planning.
I am preparing to transfer to a more demanding school. To prepare my portfolio, I spent five months working on three collections. Initially, my approach was lazy until I had a one-hour conversation with my teacher. He told me I had potential but lacked deep thinking and planning. After that, I reflected and decided to plan more seriously. I spent three hours creating a plan, and the next day, I shared it with my teacher, who praised my process and even complimented my efficiency in front of the class.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My portfolio: TITTYJOY
Tumblr media
Since then, I’ve realized my past poor performance was due to procrastination and lack of planning.
In conclusion, planning is an essential component of achieving success in both your personal and professional life. It helps to clarify goals and objectives, increases efficiency and productivity, improves decision-making, reduces stress, and facilitates effective communication.
I used that chaotic mind map as the background and added my manifesto: "Quiet and Focused." Initially, I used only English, but later, my instructor suggested adding Chinese for a personal touch. "Quiet" means I need to create in an undistracted environment; "Focused" means that only by clearing my mind of distractions can I engage in deep thinking and effective planning.
Tumblr media
Since then, I’ve dedicated several hours before starting any assignment to think and create mind maps. This process, though time-consuming, has added depth to my work, moving beyond haste and superficiality. One significant example is the food festival project in Studio, where our group combined traditional Singaporean food with modern foreign influences. I did extensive research, defined the design style, and created posters, merchandise, and brochures blending traditional and modern elements. The colors and patterns reflected Nanyang and Chinese styles, while the fonts and layout conveyed a modern feel, showcasing a fusion of old and new cultures.
I want to learn from:
Tumblr media
My studio works :
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for the importance of CTS, I initially thought it only helped me organize my thoughts. Over time, however, I’ve realized that CTS helps me express my ideas clearly, which in turn clarifies my thought process. It has positively influenced my creative work and has given me a more structured approach to problem-solving. This clarity has had a profound impact on my learning and creative output.

Week 4&5 Field trip+Analyse Artistic Traditions and Lineages
This week, we visited the National Gallery of Singapore, which showcased a variety of diverse artworks. My favorite painting, which we discussed in class, is Man and Environment by Chng Seok Tin. This painting embodies elements of Abstract Art .Abstract art is art that does not represent an accurate depiction of visual reality, communicating instead through lines, shapes, colours, forms and gestural marks.
Tumblr media
The vibrant colors of this painting beautifully depict the scenery of nature with intertwining greens and blues, while the complex lines and patterns create a harmonious visual effect. Upon closer inspection, I noticed various faces—some outlined with lines, others represented in black-and-white patterns, and some as color patches. This piece skillfully merges the themes of humanity and nature.
Tumblr media
My second favorite work is Venice by Cheong Soo Pieng, which aligns more closely with Impressionism. Impressionism often painted thickly and used quick (and quite messy) brush strokes. In most of the paintings before impressionism, you can't really see the brushstrokes at all.The blurred background highlights the prominent subject. Simple lines depict boats, figures, and trees, creating a sense of movement. The dusky, blurred sky and lake add a layer of mystery, enhancing the architectural elements and stimulating the viewer's imagination.
From these two paintings, I learned the importance of color usage and composition. The first painting made me realize that coordinated colors and elements can effectively convey deep concepts, while the second taught me how to find a balance between blur and clarity.
This visit deepened my understanding of art, and I plan to apply this knowledge in my future designs to create meaningful works.

Week 2 Connecting Theory and Practice
The topic of today's class was "How you see yourself." When I first saw the title, I immediately thought of the words "extraverted" and "talkative." In fact, my family and friends often joke, "You talk so much!" I am someone who enjoys sharing my thoughts and opening up to others, which I see as one of my strengths. Talking helps me improve my logical thinking and communication skills, and it also allows me to connect with others more easily.
Tumblr media
Secondly, I love pets, so I included photos of my dog and hamster in my presentation. They are important parts of my life and reflect my nurturing side. One area I believe I need to work on is procrastination. I tend to leave tasks until the last minute and sometimes avoid taking action altogether. This has been a challenge for me, and I know that overcoming this habit is essential for my personal growth and success in the future.
During the class discussion, I realized that everyone sees themselves from different perspectives. Some people focus on family, others on hobbies or fashion, and some prioritize their personality traits. It was fascinating to hear how my classmates view themselves, as these differences reflect each person’s unique life experiences and background. Everyone has their own lens through which they define their self-image, and I learned how important it is to appreciate these diverse viewpoints.
I am determined by my relationships with other individuals and my place in society. This is the social facet. The self is shaped by the role a person plays in society and the qualities others attribute to them.

Week 1 Creative Practice and Critical Thinking
Today’s class was impressive for me, I learned the importance of balancing critical and creative practice. We were asked to write a story about social issues, what I wrote is about modern societal Issue: Entertainment to death
Tumblr media
After discussion with classmates and lecturer,I learned that my story has some shortcomings. The story section is brief and lacks emotional depth. When discussing "tittytainment," it lacks specific examples of social and cultural phenomena, making the argument less persuasive. Additionally, it does not explore how cultural and social contexts influence the popularity of "tittytainment." Lastly, the solutions presented are too numerous and could benefit from being more focused.
These made me realise I spent too much time explaining "tittytainment," which made the story lack depth and resonance. My solutions are also too lengthy, weakening the overall argument.
Through this class, the main takeaway I had was how to balance creative practice and critical thinking. Writing a story to discuss a social issue made me have a better understanding of them. I should add more facts and details to support my story and help readers empathize in my future writing.I also discussed with my classmates how critical thinking can be creative and how to balance creative practice and critical thinking. You need to keep practicing your skills, mindset, tools, and methods in different contexts and situations. You need to seek feedback, reflect on your outcomes, and learn from your mistakes. You also need to expose yourself to diverse sources of inspiration, knowledge, and perspectives. By doing this, you will improve your performance, expand your repertoire, and enjoy your work.

WOII Summary
During learning World of ideas & Imagination this semester, I learned a lot of new knowledge I have never known even heard. Such as Phenomenology, Cultural Materialism, Postmodernism, Act Ecosystems, etc. For the first time I heard these words, I felt confused and intricate. After the discussion and activity in class and after-class review and summary, I gradually understood the meaning of them, which expanded my horizons and cognitions. Before I learned WOII, I only cared about the beauty of my designs. Now I try to connect the topics taught in WOII and think about how to make them related to my work. It will help me to get the design inspiration easily and consider more aspects, such as the experience of users, function analyses and materials, not just the appearances. What’s more, knowing about these critical theories also leads me to have a clearer understanding of art and design, it helps me to design easily. The activities and field in class makes them connected to my daily life better and I can understand them more intriguingly.
Through writing the reflections every week, not only can I review what I learn in classes, but also can understand WOII more comprehensively and develop the skill of expressing my opinion in a concise way.

Week 11 Postmodernism
For week 11, we learned about modernism. I’ve never known about this before this class although I have heard that at the art class. Along with new trends in culture and society, political agendas, technological advances in industrialism, and scientific discoveries during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, new methods of thinking and creating emerged. The Modernism time period, which influenced art, design, literature, and philosophy, led to an immense cultural transformation. From early modernism in art came Impressionism, followed by Expressionism, and later Fauvism, Cubism, and abstract art.
The influence of modernism on modern art is multifaceted. It encourages artists to challenge traditional forms and concepts, seek new modes of expression, and drive diversification and advancement in artistic creation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the class activity, an object I chose was a Chinese drink I brought. It’s a grain milk drink made by black beans, black rice and black sesame. The partner who makes the poster with me is a Flipinos. So I translated the information about the drink with her. With modernism in mind, we decided to make the poster vintage and weird style.
Due to all the ingredients being black, we chose black to its main colour, the white on the bottom because it is a milk drink. You can see there is a group of children standing on the top of the drink and an old lady next to the drink. It's because the main crowd drinking it are mostly old and young. The text of the poster, we chose red to make it look more eye-catching and grotesque.

Week 9 Cultural Materialism
In week 9’s class, we focused on what is Cultural Materialism. Overall, cultural materialism is a theoretical framework and research method for examining the relationships between the physical and economic aspects of production. It also explores the values, beliefs, and worldviews that predominate society. Cultural Materialism is divided into three aspects, infrastructure, structure and cultural superstructure.
In the class activity, we were asked to pick an infrastructure around us and answer some questions. Our group picked the Earl Lu Gallery of Lasalle. The reason why we chose it is because the gallery generally changes the exhibits of interior but the exterior remains the same. In addition, it is not just a place for artists' exhibitions, for people to know about art, but it shows and publicises the art to the public.
Tumblr media
To this question, I would like to say mobile phones have significantly influenced my understanding of design communication and experiences in many ways. They have transformed the way we interact with information and media by providing instant access to various content. Nowadays, people can view the exhibition online without leaving home, which is different from the actual exhibitions that focus on experience and atmosphere. Virtual exhibitions are more focused on the content typesetting.
Tumblr media
Although there are a lot of conveniences provided by digital privacy, including communication, access to information and so on, it also exposes individuals to potential privacy risks. From targeted advertising and data breaches to government surveillance and identity theft, there are many ways in which our digital footprints can be exploited or compromised.

Week 4&5 - How to Analyze a Work of Design + Field Trip to National Museum of Singapore
In Week 4, we were required to bring something meaningful to ourselves. We talked about why the item we brought meant a lot to us. I found that everyone has their own story and thoughts, which leads me to understand what we learned in lecture: Design Analyze Framework.
In my opinion, analysing a design work can be approached from various aspects. For instance, design concept, function analysis, materials and processes, user experience, or to think about where their inspiration comes from and what we can learn from this design work.
After learning this class, not only can we analyse other’s design work, but also teach us that we can consider more aspects when designing and where we can get the design inspiration.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Week 5, we visited the National Museum of Singapore. During this field, the thing that impressed me the most is the exhibition named EXPERIENCING SINGAPORE THROUGH TRAVEL. This exhibition shows us the history of Singapore, including The Singapore Airlines, MRT, the famous restaurant and club, national diet of Singapore, etc. As an international student, viewing this exhibition makes me know more about Singapore’s history and culture. The other reason that it impressed me is because I am a big fan of vintage. I really enjoyed and appreciated these vintage collages. They are inspired by the historical and cultural background of Singapore, which brings a lot of design ideas to my art work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What’s more, the recycling exhibition also caught my attention. It tells us the knowledge of plastic and how others can recycle it in the arts, such as remaking a comb, pencil case, earrings and so on. So we can reuse plastic to protect the environment and make lots of intriguing and colourful art works.

Week 3 Semiotics
For week 3’s lesson, we knew about what semiotics is. Semiotics is the study of signs and symbols and their use and interpretation in language, culture, society, and cognition. It explores how signs are created, communicated, and interpreted, and how they influence people's understanding and communication of the world. There are 3 categories of semiotics, icon, symbol and index. Additionally, we also learned about during the age of languages haven’t invented yet, how people use symbols and signs to communicate with each others. “If early humans were creating signs with specific meanings during the Ice Age, it would mark a huge step forward in when we developed complex writing systems. After all, our ability to communicate graphically is one of the things that sets us apart from the rest of the animal kingdom.” It meant humans use signs to communicate and regard it as a form of writing.
Tumblr media
For my poster decoding, I chose this poster of Mc Donald. The poster has mostly dark tones,it not only creates an atmosphere of ambiguity, but also makes you think there are two people kissing. However, when you look at the right person deeply, you will see it is a hamburger instead of a person. So that you know why the slogan on the bottom left of the poster says “i’m lovin’ ‘it’”. This poster makes the burger look like a person, which means people regard Mc Donald’s burger as a lover, it shows how tasty the burger is.

Week 1 - Phenomenology
Today’s class we learned about Phenomenology. Phenomenology focuses on the study of human experience, emphasising how we experience the world rather than simply analysing the world. In brief, it is how we understand and see an event and how it relates to our personal experience. For class activity, we are supposed to interpret the ideas of shadows or time in a series of images. I chose to draw shadows instead of taking pictures because I think there is nothing intriguing about the passage of time I can explore around our school.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When we were presenting in class, I found that everyone has a different understanding of time. Some took pictures of old people, some took the cracks in walls and the annual ring of the old trees. For me, I drew two pictures to show shadows, one about a forest and the main focus on a tree, the other a man in a lake.
Tumblr media
This is a picture that can explore how people look at things from different angles. You may see this is a girl turning her head back, or an old lady with a long chin wearing a hat. Which depends on how you look at this image from your viewpoint.
I believe you will gain more empathy for the other person by seeing things from different angles. By trying to “walk in their shoes”, might you come to better grasp why they are where they are in their thinking? It is really hard to understand someone else’s position if you cannot fathom their starting point. Empathy is known to increase prosocial behaviours. Empathy means you are trying to understand someone else’s emotions.

Week 10 Compulsory Question 3
Today, we had a group work which combines Mind Map with Visual Metaphor. I learned what Visual Metaphor is in today’s class. We had a discussion to decide what we were going to draw. For instance, hamburger, bulb, cat, tree and so on. Finally, we decided to make the lighthouse our Visual Metaphor. Because the lighthouse is a symbol of wisdom and shows people  direction.
Speaking of my favourite activity, I think teamwork is the one I like most. Because not only can it improve our express abilities, But also it can learn different ideas from others. I was impressed when we enjoyed others’ presentations. There was a hamburger drawn by another group that was so good. Their ideas are creative and it is colourful, especially the receipt which writes the topics of Critical Thinking. I was inspired by their earnest spirit while admiring them. We should take every activity seriously in class.
I learned a lot of things from teamwork. I think the value of it is to review what we have learned in the last seven weeks. Which is an excellent chance to learn again. I think I am good at providing some ideas during group work and I am active in communicating with others. I also used it in the studio class which was a research project in our library. We were  asked to put the unrelated information searched by everyone and give them meanings. We had the same search target, which resulted in a good collaboration with each other.
From my point of view, Critical Thinking is the ability to think clearly and rationally, understanding the logical connection between ideas, it also can be described as the ability to engage in reflective and independent thinking.

Week 12 Compulsory Question 3
In terms of collaborative projects, I think I would like to have a collaboration with the Fashion Design major in our school. First, we can communicate to define the theme and style of the design, ensuring mutual understanding and agreement. After that, I can take charge of creating clothing patterns, colour coordination and so on, providing visual elements to support the fashion design. Meanwhile, the fashion design student can focus on tailoring, fabric selection, and the actual manufacturing process. It will be an excellent collaboration.
Speaking of final projects, I would like to make a portfolio about graphic design in the final semester. That includes poster design, logo design, product design, web design and packaging design. I would take the portfolio to apply to an American art college. That has been my dream since I was in high school.
I would like to showcase and demonstrate all the design skills and knowledge that I have learnt over the past 3 years in this school, and display it in my portfolio.
If I meet some community engagement in the future, I will help them by the knowledge I have learnt. For example, create posters, flyers, event brochures, or signage to make the activity information more attractive and easily communicable. Secondly,Design social media images, website interfaces, or other digital media to enhance the online exposure and engagement of the event. Last but not least,Share my design skills by conducting workshops or training sessions, helping other community members learn and apply design techniques.
After learning CTS, l learnt a lot of things which can help me professionally, including mindfulness, collaboration, emotional intelligence, growth mindset and so on. These will help my work, such as having a clean mind when working, reassessing my weaknesses and strengths, and adjusting my mindset if I don't reach my goal or ideal.

Week 11 Compulsory Question 2
In today’s class, we were required to make a mind map of reviewing the contents we have learnt in the past 9 weeks.
After CTS I learnt mindfulness means focus on what you are doing and it also includes acceptance, meaning that we pay attention to our thoughts and feelings without judging them. I think I will combine mindfulness with study. Now I understand how significant it is to think before starting on work and have a clean mind when working.
In week 2, we learnt about collaboration. I have learnt it helps in having a discussion in teamwork with others and accepting others’ ideas. Besides, I have used it in my studio class, where we were asked to collaborate for Data Space. I think the most important thing in collaborating is dividing the work. Someone was collecting things that others brought, someone was classifying things.Multiple processes can be carried out by different people simultaneously. This results in faster work.
We learnt Emotional Intelligence in week 3. I reassessed my weaknesses and strengths by this class. I tend to fall behind on my assignments, which leads to me overworking myself on deadlines. I should improve my self-management.
I knew there were disagreements with the directions of our artworks in week 4. Learning to Include others and improve ourselves. Besides, in week 5 when I didn’t reach the aim or ideal, I learnt to adjust my mindset.
In week 6, I knew when getting inspiration, we have to learn to be productive and efficient in focusing on the weekly topic. Secondly, to properly accredit artists and to give credit when it is due.
Speaking of week 9, I knew to find a consistent workflow, especially when it is important to reference back to specific weekly topics. Besides, researching on different artists for different projects.

Week 03: Emotional Intelligence
In today’s class, we talked about “Self-management”, “Self-awareness”, “Empathy”  and “Relationship management”.Each of our team played a melodrama around these words. The melodrama we played was that the student whose work is up for discussion is very defensive.
I think the reason why the student argued with the teacher was that he was lack of self-control and relationship management. He didn't know how to control his emotions and manage the relationships with his classmates.
I would see myself as a person who is good at socialising and managing the relationship among my friends or classmates. I would take care of other’s emotions instead of only caring about myself. Especially in some public places, I would adjust the atmosphere in my own initiative to avoid awkward silence.
Although  I am a social person, I still think there is something I need to improve. First of all, my emotional intelligence is not high enough. Sometimes my jokes will make others feel uncomfortable, which is because I am a bit outspoken. Secondly, I am a person who is lack of sense of humor. I don’t understand while someone plays jokes on me and I take everything too seriously.
However, self-management is the most important thing that I need to improve. In my daily life, I prefer to do as my wishes and lack of management. I should learn how to make plans to manage my time and self-control in order to push myself to finish work first instead of playing.

Week 02: Collaborative Skills
As a collaborator of today’s group work, I realised that my strengths was I had a lot of ideas of creation. I came up with the idea for the Cat Castle, which brought a huge help to our team. However,my weakness was that my expression ability is not that good. Some of them didn’t know what they needed to do. I didn’t organise the teamwork well while building the monument. I should organise the work of everyone, such as the
drawing group and building group. The most important thing was, we didn’t manage the time well. When other groups started making, we hadn't decided what we wanted to do, which resulted in our progress being slower than other groups. I think the reason was because we didn’t have a discussion before creating the Cat Castle.
If I have more time and better materials, how should I re-design it? First of all, I will colour it in a variety of colours and draw more patterns on the castle, including bricks and walls, which makes it look not so boring and monotonous. What’s more, I will make more castles to make it bigger and grander. Last but not least, cut the papers into more shapes, so that we can build more kinds of castles. What is significant is that we should use paperboard, because papers are too flimsy and easy to distort, wrinkle or tear.

Week 01: What is critical thinking?
Before having my first critical thinking class, I thought it was to criticize someone whose thinking is different from mine. After the critical thinking class,I realized that I need to be well-qualified if I want to criticize others. For example, ensuring my thoughts are well-founded and avoid being overly offensive. So that I can manage the relationship between people.
In today’s class, I learned what mindfulness is. Before I thought that it means focus on what you are doing now. Now I know mindfulness means maintaining a moment by moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations and surrounding environment through a gentle lens. What’s more, mindfulness also includes acceptance, meaning that we pay attention to our thoughts and feelings without judging them. In the future’s learning, I think I will combine mindfulness with study. For instance, when I am testing, I can use mindfulness to calm myself down and focus on thinking. Or when we meet some difficulty  in doing homework, which can help us escape the vicious cycle of negative thinking.
Speaking of the eventful moment, we watched some videos about failure during today’s class. These videos told us not to harbor negativity toward failure as it is an important part of growth. Before, I thought that failure implies a big setback for me. After watching the video, I realized that failure doesn’t mean setback. On the contrary, it can help you to recognize the issues and look at it in different ways.
