our dad served in the military for 30 years and growing up in the military definitely shaped us In ways we didn’t think. It had its downsides, but we got to explore the world and explore our self expression in so many different places with so many different people and for that we are thankful. Retired military kid Mogai coiners rise. We are a little scared to post this not gonna lie, but honestly, being in the military is a big part of our identity as a whole. 

Usually, I don’t go into the color meanings of my flags, but my dad was in the Air Force branch so it is based off the Air Force colors. In the retired flag the colors are based off of purple, which is based off of the month of the military child.

hey fellow white people in the mogai community: we gotta start doing more to point out and address racism in our community.

i know a lot of us (myself included!) are hesitant to point out and address racism because we feel it's not our place, don't want to speak over POC, etc., but unfortunately that just results in the burden falling solely on POC. if we ignore racism when we see it, even if it's coming from a place of not wanting to do the wrong thing, we're contributing to the problem. the fact that we can choose to ignore racism is white privilege.

if we don't point out and address racism, we're putting the POC in our community in the position of either needing to tolerate seeing it, or needing to address it themselves. generally, when people are told that something they said or did was racist, they either deny it and act like the person pointing it out is being too sensitive (which is, itself, racist), or go overboard with apologies and self-flagellation (which makes it about them). both of these reactions put even more burden on the person pointing out the racism.

if we want to make this community safer for POC, we have to actively try to do that. it is unfair to the POC in this community for us to sit back and expect them to do all of the work to make this community safer for themselves on their own.

we've all been raised in racist societies, so none of us are incapable of racism. (see @radiomogai's post on the subject (link) for more about this.) this means we will make mistakes along the way, and we have to accept that. we can't let the fear of not being perfect allies prevent us from trying at all.

Hi MOGAI community. Let's talk about racism.

I'm racist. You're racist. Everyone is racist. Don't panic. We can work through this. Take a moment to sit with that. How does that feel, to be told that you are racist? Think about it for a moment. Try to look back and remember something you have said or done that was racist, intentionally or unintentionally, knowingly or unknowingly.

Can't think of anything? You've never done anything racist and you never will do anything racist? There, that's your racist action, that you claimed that you have never and will never do anything racist. I'm not calling you evil. I'm not calling you a bad person. Don't start apologizing, don't start panicking. Take a moment and sit with that.

We are all products of deeply racist societies. No matter where you live, no matter your own race and ethnicity, no matter your own personal experiences, you have been, continue to be, and always will be shaped by constant and inescapeable racism around you. Racism has been taught to you while you were growing up, racism was reinforced to you in your classes, racism surrounds you in your workplace. Racism is at home in your home.

Recognizing this and accepting this is one of the most important steps that you can take towards anti-racism.

The word 'racist' does not describe a type of person. The word 'racist' describes an action or idea. If we begin to think of racists as some other kind of person, then we separate them from ourselves. When we separate them from ourselves, we deny our own capacity and willingness to be racist. When we deny our own capacity and willingness to be racist, we ignore it when people point out our own racism to us. We become more focused on the idea of, "I can't be racist, I've helped with all of these racial justice initiatives!", than on the idea of addressing racism in and around us. We become more focused on maintaining our own self-image as someone who isn't racist than on working towards anti-racist action.

A person who cannot consider that they may have done or may be doing something racist is not someone that people of colour are safe discussing racism around. A community where accusations of racism are considered more offensive than racism itself is a community that prioritizes the white status quo over the safety and wellbeing of people of colour.

I have done racist things. I will do racist things again. You have done racist things. You will do racist things again. Sit with this. Accept it. Only once you no longer panic at the idea of being racist can you take meaningful anti-racist action. Only once you no longer prioritize your own guilt and shame about performing racism can you begin to prioritize anti-racism.

If you want to know more about the subject, then I can highly recommend White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo. I still have yet to read through the entire book, but I have here a link to the introduction and first chapter of it. a flag for those with gastrointestinal disorders and diseases of any kind! i partially wanted this flag for myself, as someone with gerd and ibs, but there's also not a lot of gi disability flags in general and i want to work towards remedying that.

purple, periwinkle, and green are common colors for gi disorder/disease awareness ribbons — periwinkle in particular is very common (used as the awareness ribbon for cancers of several gi tract areas/organs, gerd, and ibs), so i used two stripes of that color. the red stripes represent pain/discomfort, the gastrointestinal tract itself, and the stigma those with gi disorders/diseases face.

This post is not about me, even though I'm the one making it, the only interaction I care about is the attention given to the users I have listed. I am a simple white boy from Detroit. I do not want you to listen to my voice, I want you to follow my finger as I point to the voices you should be listening to. Along with that, you may notice not many users are listed. I have noticed as well, and I feel that says something about this community. Something that leaves a sour taste in my mouth. I am not blind, I have seen how our community treats POC and it is honestly pretty damn abhorrent. Many users speak over POC voices or simply don't take it seriously. Rather than actively being anti-racist, a lot of people just put shit like "racists DNI" in their rentry's or carrd or anything and call it good. There is no active fight against racism here, simply a passive acceptance whenever it rears its head.
