So it was about a 40% chance I was going return to my Voltron craze with VLD, a 45% chance with the Devil's Due comics, and a [squints for basic math] 15% chance it would be something else. I was off rambling to friends this week about Beast King Golion, Armored Fleet Dairugger XV, Defender of the Universe, and Voltron Force, so it was anyone's game. But Devil's Due has won out, so prepare for a liveblog as I reread one of my favorite iterations of Voltron.

I will liveblog by replying to this post for starters. Blacklist #voltron liveblog if you want to flee from any rambling, though it probably won't be excessive. If it is excessive, sorry not sorry, this is where fun times are made.

having watched all the voltrons up to vforce (i guess you can include vld though its been a few years) its honestly interesting and somewhat depressing how a lot of subsequent entries post-golion/dotu more or less wind up leaving keith and allura’s relationship to dry; the only time i think i felt like there was romantic chemistry and an effort put into their relationship was in the ddp comics.

in vttd, both keith and allura are given prominence but they almost seem to have a barrier between them. in the dynamite comics allura had Not A Lot Going On (and i cant say the treatment of women in the dynamite comics was good at all 😭 merla i’m so fucking sorry) and seemed like kinda just. There. for keith to be in a relationship with. and vforce light of life my true love etc etc i never could actually BELIEVE they had feelings for each other. in crossed signals it kinda felt that way, but i just. i dunno. it really only wouldve taken one scene of just them without Looming Destiny for me to feel convinced there was a relationship/potential for one there. i could believe them as friends and comrades but a couple ? idk

ultimately to me dotu/golion had the best representation, and if i had to choose between the two, while not romantic, golion’s really comes out on top for me. akira really believes in fala and her leadership capabilities, while fala believes in akira’s ability to lead golion. there is a genuine care and focus on their bond and the way it lay at the heart of golion, and i think my issue with all the subsequent iterations is that it’s like because we know in dotu keith and allura liked each other, because ‘he was a boy, she was a girl, could i get any more obvious?’ they don’t have to do extra legwork to develop them. maybe i’m being toooo critical but to me i really see keith and allura as one of the foundations of voltron, romantic or platonic. and honestly the way how their bond was very much neglected in vld outside of the stupid ass not-all-galra arc, it makes me sad. there was a real missed opportunity to make them great friends who were able to understand each other’s struggles as new leaders, but alas. here we are.

Season 1, Episode 6: The Right Arm of Voltron

The episode title worries me a bit, what the hell did Lance start now

Castle looks super shiny, how many times did it flash the light in someone's eye lol now some of the Arusians have come by to live in the castle

Hunk reduced to a fat joke, as per usual unfortunately Pidge why did you have to flip to reach the button for the door, you could've just walked

Pidge once again being a cutie, his little arm flaps when he's walking through the pantry is adorable

Nothing good ever lasts, another attack on the castle, but now it's worse because people are living in it

Coran said he was activating the robot defenses so I'm sure that the people I saw manning the turrets outside the castle are supposed to be said robots but I think it's cool that the Arusians just arrived at the castle and some are already fighting for Arus again

Ah, that's why Coran said robots, because people literally die There's the princess taking over for the barely dead guy on the floor Now sporting her typical bun!

OH SHIT THEY'RE FORMING VOLTRON BEFORE FIGHTING A ROBEAST?? I mean there is no robeast yet but my point still stands

"Somehow they built a new castle, it's awesome!" I know awesome is an old word, but man is it weird to hear still

Ok so Allura does have some weird clairvoyant powers then, because Haggar mentions that she's the only other one that knows the secret to make Voltron, and it's because she talks to her dead dad

More discrepancies, Zarkon has been saying he wants Allura brought to him, but only now do we get a reason for it, and apparently he thought she was dead after they first attacked Arus

Oh god is this the episode where Haggar actually does something to stop the team? Not good

Planet Doom is apparently 10 mil light years away from Arus, interesting I do have the canon map of the universe, so I'll have to look at it again to actually see the distance

Damn it we're back at the Galaxy Garrison again, at lease the building looks cool IS THAT THE GUY WHO FUCKS OVER THE TEAM?? MOTHERFUCKER

Why does the Garrison believe that Zarkon was defeated, he has a whole kingdom at his disposal and has literally attacked multiple times before even after Voltron formed Oh ok so this was trying to show that the GG does shit even though they're absolutely useless at best and STILL can't do things for the team like giving them an early attack warning Like their frequencies are blocked because of meteor showers which is why they can't, but man was that scene unnecessary

Allura mans a food cart, more at 10

Hunk reduced to a fat joke again Also, a scene is reused where pidge and hunk try to get more Arusians to come by again

Pidge says he's seen Haggar's cat before, but I don't believe it Yeah, this is the episode I thought was playing last time

Aw cute Lance is protecting Pidge, Very much the second parent to Keith's first

Oh shit both Sven AND Lance run after the cat And now Lance is captured ONLY TO BE SAVED WITH SVEN BY A SWORD LETS GOO

Haggar pulls a hydra on Sven, no matter how many times he slices her she just doubles See you later my dude, don't worry it'll get better because you'll become a trophy husband

Man these fight scenes are weird Pidge Hunk and Allura fuck off to the castle

NO SVEN HE GOT FUCKING TAG TEAMED oh shit blood! That's not something you can easily censor

I like the symbolism from golion seeping into voltron, Sven's sword is still standing after being stuck in the ground, but after Sven begs for the hospital it drops Tears and sorrow, Keith and Lance are crying as they hold their close to death friend This makes for REALLY GOOD LANCE ANGST

Now the robeast attack is ACTUALLY happening, that must be horrifying, losing a friend and the ability to protect the planet I'M SORRY SVEN IS VOLTRONS RIGHT ARM?? BITCH I THINK YOU RIGHT LEG

I can't tell if Lance is being self-sacrificing because of his guilt for leaving Sven alone which got him mortally wounded or not He purposefully led the robeast to a lava pit, so the team would push both of them into it, but then red is immune to really high temps

Well they defeated the robeast by melting it in lava, lucky break They're still celebrating though which I think is weird after your friend has to be sent to a far off planet to get decent medical aid

Episode end! I'm excited to watch golion at the end of this entire thing, the themes just come through because of the animation, it'll probably give me more of what I want tbh

Season 1, Episode 5: The Princess Joins Up

Just from the episode title alone, I know my boy Sven is about to be tossed out like TRASH

I wonder what Zarkon wants with Allura, Lotor hasn't been introduced yet so maybe just a political prisoner or something

All the guards and prisoners are like ??? because haggar swears she'll upgrade the winner of this next gladiator fight so they can go against voltron if they didn't push the "all the soldiers were robots not people" narrative so much I'd agree but one of them asked how she could improve robots,, many ways sir and it's worse because she uses magic

Again some of these robeast and alien designs are so cool, very creative and reminds me biology is a suggestion when it comes to making a new species

A look into haggar lab, interesting actually it's just being used as a torture chamber where she infuses magic into them while they're still awake to feel the pain, horrifying

On Arus again, now it's the team calling out to the remaining Arusians into the tunnel to give them safety in the castle AND LANCE ALMOST FALLS OFF A CLIFF, GREAT START It's ok Keith grabs him before he dies

Pidge and Hunk are also trying to convince some people to come by, too bad their main selling point is wanting their cooking because it doesn't work with them either

I couldn't find a gif of the team sitting on this brick wall which I thought was super cute, and I don't want to screenshot that rn, so now it's up to imagination but fr trust me the team are all cuties

"I hate to give [Allura] the bad news :(" to "Sorry! No one wants to help!" PIDGE A LITTLE MORE TACT PLEASE LMAO

Something interesting, Hunk points out that they can't use Voltron to outright attack Zarkon and Allura agrees because he's a defender Knowing that they defeat everyone at the end after outright attacking castle doom, it seems kind of ironic BUT ALSO in Voltron Force (2011) we get an episode that revisits this legit subject and answers why or why not that would change That'll be a fun episode to review when I get to it

Again why would he want Princess Allura so bad, political prisoner is my best idea here This is probably where the Keith/Allura shipping started because after Coran mentions that Keith is super quick to threaten violence against the guy if he tries to touch her I mean ignoring the fact that it's one of the more obvious pairings lol

An attack! And they destroyed that satellite dish thing that Sven and Allura just finished building, rip

They routinely call the lions "space lions" which I guess makes sense but if Earth or at least the GG have been in contact with aliens for god knows how long it feels like it's kind of redundant to specifically say they're from space

Again with the GoLion references, I don't remember it being this abundant it's just them saying the name GoLion btw, nothing subtle LMAO

This week's robeast is called the Dieklops! They named this one pretty well, so there's some hope for the future, This one is heavier than the last one at only 4100 short tons!

I like to think that the team fights in the lions first before forming Voltron because they're trying to see what it can do, and it's a lot easier to annoy a robeast into showing its cards when there's more of you

Activate interlocks, dynotherms connected, infracells up, mega thrusters are go! They finally did the chant this time! Maybe it's because I religiously rewatch Voltron Force (2011) but I expected them to say "Let's go voltron force!" but instead they just shouted Voltron that's ok too I guess

I didn't comment on the transformation sequence last time, but it's pretty cool because it reminds me of some frankenstein's monster type stuff especially because there are a lot of electricity crackles and zaps seen and heard when voltron forms

AND IM FREEEE FREEE FALLIN

Ok but actually though that's a really interesting landscape near the castle, pretty secure in case of ground attacks but what about when natural disasters hit? It probably isn't that safe

I know the show just pulls phrases out of its ass to sound futuristic but "nucleonic circut" is wild

Alfor CREATED voltron?? Again I'm twisting it to my own version because I can't trust them telling a linear story here, but my thinking is that after Voltron was officially split into five, Alfor later discovered them and had them slowly rebuilt as mechs which is why they form like this now

Man these guys suck at dodging

oh shit now the castle is getting taken apart I know what happens next but it's still wild

HELLO?? CORAN WHY WOULD YOU TELL HER TO SURRENDER WHEN YOU SAID THAT ZARKON NEVER BACKS DOWN

I think it's a nice touch that Voltron has expressions whenever he fights, kind of hints at his magical nature even though in this show they're just treated as machines and nothing more

Alfor ex machina returns and confirmation that Zarkon is the one who killed Alfor

Goodbye decrepit old castle of Arus, hellooo new futuristic version!

OH SHIT WATCH OUT ALLURA STAYS STRAPPED ok maybe I was wrong about this episode being the one where Sven gets nerfed

Robeast is defeated but as Allura monologues they show a slide show of all the lions with their pilots on top, except the first one we see is blue and Allura on top lol that must've been weird for kids who saw it air

Episode end! Another short one it feels like, or is it because it was such a simple premise This is the last one for tonight, and hopefully I'll be able to do one tomorrow, but it's my busiest day of the week :/

Season 1, Episode 4: The Missing Key

Now I have a snack to get me through this episode so let's get started!

Haggar cat is kind of cute but in a decrepit way lol

oh right the boys are presumed dead Allura is crying once again, this time I get it she gets to cry

I'M SORRY, ARUS IS IN CONTACT WITH THE GARRISON?? AND THERE'S NO EXTRA HELP SENT TO THEM?? "If only they weren't so far away" YOU ARE LITERALLY A GALAXY WIDE ALLIANCE IM SURE YOU CAN SPARE MILITARY FORCES TO HELP ARUS

Not to say you shouldn't rely on Pidge, but Pidge shouldn't be the only chance left to protect the universe at this point

Oh poor Pidgey, he's stumbling all over the place trying to get back into the control room I know he's ok but ow my heart

Either an animation error or another scene being reused for this one, Pidge falls to the floor and the mice jump over him to get into a hole in the wall, as we see pidge he's in his civvies instead of his flight uniform

oh god now he's sobbing because he's worried about the rest of the team,, my heart cant take him being sad

NO PLEASE I'm GONNA CRY WITH HIM The boys are alive (obvs) and got into contact with Pidge, and now he has happy tears Also, the first thing Keith asked when he woke up was if Pidge was ok,, Keith is a single mother in the middle of a war

What a cutie, I'm protecting this kid with my whole life he deserves everything and has never done anything wrong ever

God more happy tears, I know he's happy, but I never want to see a tear on that face AGAIN unless it's from laughter damn it

"Pidge has a funny sense of humor" I'm so glad the team knows him well enough to know what pranks he plays found family and incredibly believable that they really care about each other

Can mice make holes through stone? Either way the space mice being able to do that through A COFFIN is insane

Not the mice doing a line dance for Allura, cute but funny svnosd I wonder if Allura has very small telepathy powers that let her talk to the mice specifically, magic is probably why the team was able to see Alfor in the first place too

The last key is found! Time to start up the final kitty cat!

Coran is being such a wishy-washy bitch like first you praise that voltron is finally coming back, but now you're like "we can't risk it!" yes you can shut up Coran

Is it weird that Keith's voice kind of reminds me of Sonic?

Oh good I couldn't remember if the team could automatically form voltron or not, I'm glad they struggled a bit before they formed up They didn't say the whole interlocking preamble! But they did do it for formation at least

It seems like they were trying to add some GoLion references into the script, but it's not working out so well And there he is! The robot of the hour!

They're just standing there as voltron burns just to scare the robeast and it WORKED oh shit it's the big sword!

And thus begins the adventures of the voltron force! Standing in a very cool pose after defeating a robeast lol

Episode 4 end! Now we're getting into monster of the week territory, and will probably drop another episode review too
