8/8 - Oiran old-Edo costume [full size / other charts]

Oiran were at the top of yujo (women of pleasure) hierarchy in Edo night world. More than prostitutes, Oiran were cultured women trained in Arts, litterature, calligraphy, social conversation, etc. Despite their secluded lives (prostitutes, often life-indebted to their brothels, could not freely leave red light districts), the most famous were known across the country for their wits, grace and beauty.

Oiran outfit is probably the most luscious of all traditional Japanese garments. First mimicing court ladies, especially by wearing the heavy upper brocade kimono (uchikake), they then developped their own extravagant fashion to mark their rank and wealth.

Compared to the quite demure Geisha, everything was more in Oiran looks. Their hairstyle called date hyogo was huge and used a profusion of hairpins and decorative accessories, like their big trademark gold knot.

Oiran wore several luxurious kimono, with big colorful patterns and gold embroideries. Another way of recognize them was their big belt knot. Prostitutes always tied their obi on their bellies and Oiran did too. But, their obi was very large and lavishly decorated, sometimes until becoming real painted sceneries.

Their whole attire was extremely heavy and unpractical. Moving -and dancing- gracefully while wearing those required strenght and skills. More so if you add their special lacquered shoes called koma geta (or mitsu-ashi), hight plateforms they wore barefeet even in winter.

Oiran were quite a vision for red light districts patrons, a real image of the old chinese “castle topplers”, named keisei in japanese - women men of power would give everything. Supporting an Oiran was extremely costly. It’s one of the reasons those hight rank yujo had declined by the end of Edo period.

Greetings! My rules will be simple and easy to understand.

1) Basic role-play etiquette is required here. This blog is a Crossover, OC, Multiship friendly.  2) I’ve no interesting in your personal altercations with others, meaning no drama. I’ll not have any part of it.  3) Don’t expect utter perfection with me. I’ll take my sweet time in replying, since I’ve a life outside of role-play. I’ll not always be the most active, but you’re within your rights to message ask when I’ll reply. This is my first time ever role-playing on Tumblr, so I don’t know all the lingo. I don’t know how to do fancy front designs, beautiful blog layouts, and amazing icons. Everything will be basic here.  4) Length will vary. Some days I will be able to write a multiple paragraph reply, some days I might be only able to crank out a single paragraph. I’ll be semi-selective with who I write with.
