John putting people he cares about / his teammates in his own version of The Bad Room will never not be important to me. He does not know how to talk about his experience so he makes others go through it instead. He is sharing his trauma in the only way he knows how, by traumatizing others when they “misbehave.”
He very blatantly does it with Maeve in season three, locking her in a fully white room where the only window is on the door. He does it, at least partly, with Starlight as well, though he puts her in a containment cell with no lights at all. I do not doubt he will do it again in season five with SB.

Homelander thinks of childhood, the soft sputter of a projector behind him in the learning cell, as a voice booms over the speakers, masculine, powerful. Movies from the good ol' days, Captain Vought, everything he stood for, conditioned into a child learning how to be a Vought sponsored proper SUPERHERO.
Captain Vought! A quick question, if you will? Did you ever wonder if you had children? If there might be a little boy sitting all by himself in a little white cell, miles below the Earth, who has not experienced a kindness in the world, who might be taking comfort in the idea of being just like you?

He thinks of his first debut, the unofficial one, where every reported signed an NDA, because it was all too much, the cameras, the smells, the touching. The closest John had ever come to fear, until now. (Strange, how every ounce of discomfort he has experienced has had the underlying smell of sweat, and far too much fucking bodily contact.) It's always been there, though, hurt, fear, that sinking fear he will be a fucking disappointment. Like the bruising under his eye, carefully concealed and color matched to the rest of him, but still wounded, still marked.
John sticks out like a sore thumb, bright red, white and blue contrasting the more militant coloring they went for with Leon's costume, it's meant to distract, to be flashy, to make him seem bigger than he is. His shoulders are relaxed under the padding of his suit, pauldrons sit flat on his shoulders, creating a perfect silhouette, a carefully crafted cut out so he fits just perfect in Leon's shadow.
“ Hey, I'm not here to fight, ” gloved hands raise to shoulder height, the first sign of surrender he has shown anyone but fucking Madelyn. “ Unlike your little . . . friends, I am capable of being civil, maybe give me a couple years as a communist popsicle and who knows ”

He is often vigilant, though this trait is not a conscious one, enhanced senses have left him with little choice. He hears the paper crumple, can hear the folds shift when it is rolled between Captain Vought’s fingers. He pays no mind to the little details, maybe if he had . . .
He hears the little paper ball fly through the air, doesn’t think to dodge until it ricochets off his face, tumbling to the floor with the barest bounce off the padding of his suit for good measure.

He looks almost offended before he realizes just how stupid that would make him look, instead John rolls his eyes like a prepubescent teenager on the verge of throwing a tantrum and stomping his feet, as if he did not consider shooting a laser at the little white ball on the floor just because he feels like it.
Blue gaze snaps from the offending item to father's form, casual demeanor does little to soothe the younger man. If Leon were anyone else, the glare he casts in father’s direction would have literally burned a hole straight through him.
God forbid you do something nice, and bring your father a milkshake.

Trying to explain that yes, I do believe John is a terrible man and extremely flawed individual who has done abhorrent things, but that he is also a deeply traumatized person who was abused not only physically but psychologically, and that every facet of his being was molded by Vought. ( and neither one of these things excuses the other. )

He had not quite meant it as something derogatory, the malice on his tongue is not quite directed at the Frenchman, it is more an aftertaste of William. Homelander does not consider the rest of the little merry band, they are no more important than an ant, pests who have pooled themselves together in an attempt to be something stronger than they are. ( This is of course aside from Hughie, who has made far too big of an impression with the Starlight debacle. )
Rather, John is stating it as a fact, he thinks it and thus it is indisputable. That is how the world works, belief is fact if enough people are on your side, that is the reality of power.
“ That so ? ” Head tilts, the movement not graceful enough to be considered bird like, it is predatory. This feels much like a: guns don’t kill people, people kill people, sort of conversation. “ See, I’m not so sure that’s how the whole… deal works…. ”
“ I mean let’s use attack dogs, as a… general example, ” John begins this particular spiel with a pause, gaze snapping in Frenchie’s directions to make a point. “ You might charge the owner a fee, sue for pain and suffering, medical bills, for whatever harm came from training them “sick ‘em” but at the end of the day, you still put the dog down. ”
This particular taste is far too familiar for his own comfort.

Frenchie wanted to be offended. He reared back and something offensive crawled up the back of his throat and rolled out onto his tongue but he swallowed it back. Homelander could laser him in half if he wanted to. And he had no doubt that he would. Without a second though.
So he bit his tongue, he worried at the end of his cigarette.
And then he shrugged. "Ouais. A creature like me. Too stupid to uh-- - Do much of anything." Too stupid to be a threat, maybe? He could hope. Frenchie knew that wasn't true. He puffed his cigarette for a moment. "They tell me what to do. I do it. I uh-- - I do not need the finer details, hmn?"
