Clarabelle - The Eccentric Opera Singer
You sing a sea-shanty. The lady likes that. A little too much. She leans in, her eyes as big as lakes, and begins to sing to you about the moon. It's coming down to lay itself along your skin like a cool and loving serpent, you see. It's going to infiltrate your eyes. It will insinuate itself into your ears. It will fill you with mercury and wretchedness like the fountain in the lobby. In the end you'll be a sack of skin filled with splashing silver fluid.
You don't much enjoy the song, to be honest. You sit on the floor and cram your fingers in your ears. When you finally remove your fingers, she tells you her story.
She used to be an opera singer. She was taught a special song to keep her baby quiet. Have you seen the Masters of the Bazaar today? They used to visit her chambers all the time. Mr Stones was her very favourite! Such jewels!
------------------------------------------------------
I present to everyone, my design for our beloved Clarabelle, the Eccentric Opera Singer!
If I'm to be honest, I hadn't really had a set design for Clara in my head. All I knew was she was going to be brunette and I wanted to give her blue eyes for reasons I'll come back to another time. Beyond that, she was just sort of an amalgamation of other designs I'd seen for her at any point in my mind. However, after my previous Light Fingers piece where I indulged myself in my love for Phantom of the Opera, I decided to take inspiration from another actor famous for performing in the musical for my Clara design. Specifically the original Christine, Sarah Brightman.
I thought that big ol poofy do of brown curls she had in the 80s would be a neat idea for Clara, so I did my best to emulate it. It may not be the most proper for the era, but frankly I think Clara has other worries on her mind right now. Oh and speaking of Brightman's lovely yet kinda unsettling stare felt right for that matter.
Obviously with my art style its not exactly evident that she's supposed to look like Brightman, but it was fun mental casting for myself to finally put a face to the name. I even think she would sound like her.
I found this photo of Brightman and used it as inspiration for her outfit over on the right. Though I did some alterations to be a little more accurate to the Victorian setting, and hide some inconvenient anatomy. Perhaps its a costume from one of her operas.
I also used this post as inspiration for Clara's outfit when she's not stuck in maternity clothes (to put it lightly), though sadly I had to leave out the hat, scarf, and goggles for now.
Anyway, I used AdoraStock and stock photos for reference.

Wedding dress, c. 1916

This beautifully delicate wedding dress is made from cream silk chiffon and lace and lined with cream silk. The bodice has a deep V-neckline and a lace collar. The fabric of the bodice falls to create a layered over-tunic. Both this and the skirt feature an abundance of silk-covered beads which weigh the fabric down at the hem. The hem of the skirt is also finished with metallic ribbon. Cream silk ribbons cross the body at the back. The dress has a lace train which falls from the neckline to the floor. This has been trimmed with imitation orange blossom. Orange blossom branches also adorn the dress itself. The blossoms and buds are made from wax and the leaves are of silk, stiffened with wax.
The dress was worn by 20-year-old Elileen Browning for her marriage to Alfred Dugdale at St. Paul’s Church, Knightsbridge on the 25th October 1916. Eileen sadly died in childbirth just a year later. Her mother carefully kept this beautiful wedding dress in her memory.
