Yesterday I was eating hibachi shrimp (mmm shrimp) and was suddenly struck by the thought of polling people on whether or not they, too enjoy shrimp. And then I could make the no-answer answer "shrimps is bugs." But wait! Surely this would then become the most attractive option, skewing the results. So to combat this, I thought, I would need to add two additional options: "shrimps is good and bugs" and "shrimps is bad and bugs". So,

Munou na Nana review!

I’m so glad I’m the type to just skim most premises, or not even look at them too hard, because the first episode “twist” definitely had me sitting in shock for a whole 2 minutes as the opening played. 

Anyway, I’d been saying I’ve been on edge continuously with each episode. I thought it was very fun to watch how Nana had to plot ways to kill these kids, very creative and genius ways that makes it very entertaining but at the same time, having to cover her tracks and to get the guy sniffing her out (Kyoya) off her tracks. The amount of times that Kyoya could have been correct but was off by 1 little thing has me sweating and wiping it off when Nana just barely dodges or gets away with it.

I can use a lot of anime examples for what this series reminds me of (danganronpa x death note x bokuhero) but it’s kind of unfair to do it like that. 

I think my favorite, or one of my favorite things about it is the art style. It’s very simple and clean and cute, something I favor more. And for a show about killing kids, it could have been a lot worse, a lot gore-y and even a lot more vulgar in certain parts. Like this easily could have been another “teens killing each other” show where there’s a certain amount of dark and horny cringe (Ranpo Kitan) but I never got that at all.

I’m thinking about the methods that Nana uses, like, yeah she has to keep the deaths on the downlow so they aren’t anything flashy, and she resorts to using poison for most of the murders.  

But I’m also talking about how some parts that could be sexualized never really get as bad as they could have. Tsunekichi making moves on her and groping her, and then later undressing her really could have been drawn a lot more explicitly but it never really is framed in a sexy way. Same with when Michiru initially licks Nana’s leg wound, it could have had some shoujo bubbles and she could have been blushing and it easily could have been an ecchi-esque scene, but it’s framed innocently (as Michiru is) and Nana reacts appropriately. Also Kyoya’s pat down of Nana for the phone was a quick few swipes, and I looked at the manga too and they were quite faithful to the panels. 

I guess Yuka’s whole thing with Shinji is borderline creepy but it’s never framed sexually, though I question the subs on the crunch used occasionally. They feel more like Funi subs where things are translated with liberties. 

I’m glad the anime ended off semi-conclusively that makes you wanting more instead of a fake anime ED or rushing the arc. I’m definitely jumping into the manga after that, so I guess I can see if they did rush the arc.
