Yuki Onna - WK 12
Yuki Onna, or the “Snow Woman” is supernatural being in Japanese mythology. According to folk beliefs, she is an attractive woman with long black hair and bright, almost white complexion that roams around during storms. It is said that Yuki Onna can walk over snow without leaving impression behind her or even stopping snow from continuing to fall and she is said to freeze her victims to death just by breathing on them. In some stories she is depicted as vengeful and against men but in other cases she may spare the man, or better still fall in love with him. Yuki Onna appears in the limelight in animé “GeGeGe no Kitaro” is where she is depicted as one of the many yokai or creatures that are in between the human and spiritual worlds. Another movie that uses this concept is “Kwaidan”, a Japanese horror movie released in 1965, and the part “The Woman of Snow”liberated from the Yuki Onna legend. From an analysis point of view, Yuki Onna can be regarded as the spirits of winter, the dangerous but beautiful part of winter. During winters which were fatal due to extreme cold, perhaps, legends about a beautiful but dangerous snow spirit were a means of explaining why people disappeared or died during snowstorms. Furthermore, Yuki Onna’s kind and deadly aspects might relate to the of winter. One moment it is like a benefits, the next, it is a danger.

The Kraken - WK 13
The Kraken is a large sea monster that is supposed to live in the waters off the coast of Norway and Greenland. In Norse mythology, it is probably the best known sea monster, frequently described as a giant octopus or squid that can pull ships and their crews down to the bottom of the ocean. As early as the 12th century, mysterious sea monsters, of which the Kraken is one, became legends of sailors who set out to sea around the world. The Kraken is associated with the popular culture of the present days and can be mentioned in films and books. There is also the appearance in the “Pirates of the Caribbean”, specifically in the “Dead Man’s Chest” as the blind, deadly beast commanded by the character Davy Jones. Another literary use is the poem “The Kraken” by Alfred Lord Tennyson in which the author describes the monster’s sleep at the bottom of the sea. In an analytical view some people think that the story of the Kraken might be due to real sightings of giant squids as these creatures can reach very large sizes and were for the most part only sighted a few times. Such squids with extensive tentacles and large eyes might have appeared horrible and terrific to seamen who had little acquaintance with them. The Kraken itself is probably fictional but it is their representation of people’s concern on what is unknown of the deep sea!

Yowie - WK11
The Yowie is a cryptid of Australia folk lore that is referred to a huge, essentially naked, hair covered creature with resemblance to an Ape. It is believed to in the forests and on occasions it is referred to as the Aussie Bigfoot. Apparently, the Yowie has long been part of the Aboriginal folklore, with each tribe having its traditional account. It has been sighted since colonial days making it a enduring myth down under.
The Yowie has appeared in numerous forms of media with the years. This show makes appearances on the TV show The Outback as a large creature that the characters of the show are attempting to find. Furthermore, has been related and documented on television shows and books about that particular area of unknown creatures commonly referred to as cryptids.
Well, last but not the least, what could the Yowie really be? The critics believe that Yowie sightings could be possibly mistaken for regularly occurring large kangaroos or some feral people. Some attribute it that it is only a mother wicked and people see it based on their expectation of it, while others say perhaps it is just a case of mob mentality. To be honest however, who wouldn’t want to be intrigued by mystery? Regardless of the existence of the Yowie or not, it bring some sort of fairy tale into the Australian reserve. And come on, folks, the presence of a huge and shaggy beast in the Australian desert sounds only cool enough not to be completely ruled out.

Mongolian death worm - WK10
Now picture yourself, you’re walking in the Gobi – a big, virtually uninhabited, live less desert, and all of a sudden, people start telling legends about a slimy creature called "Olgoi-Khorkhoi" or, as the foreigners call it, Mongolian death worm. Wikipedia claims that it may range in size from 2 to 7 feet long, is blood red, spits poison at its foes and can give them electric shocks as well. That’s a horror movie kinda stuff, no? Oh, by the way, the Mongolian death worm is actually a part of popular films, more specifically, horror movies. Any of you recall ‘Mongolian Death Worm’, the reality show broadcasted by the Syfy Channel way back 2010? Ah yes, that’s the one, raiding treasure hunters and upping the ante on cute creepy in the middle of the desert. Not only that, but it has appeared on such programmes as “Destination Truth” and “MonsterQuest” where those with courage attempt to discover the reality of the stories. Now, let's get analytical. What if this so-called death worm that everyone seems to be talking about isn’t a monster in the least? Others think it may likely be a new type of snake or worm that has not been known to science and is living somewhere in the vastness of the Gobi Desert. Perhaps it is just an erroneous identification of a sand boa or skink, and the stories have spun into that over the years. But here’s the kicker: to date, there is no sound scientific data that can be used to affirm the existence of the so called Mongolian death worm. All of it is pounded from the rumors and legends that accumulate around any place. But the legend continues to become popular, and inspire many people as well as adding some twist into the world. So, is it real? Who knows. But the Mongolian death worm is really a far fetched story one could imagine at best.

The Yeti - WK9
These are a few features of the Yeti, which is a legendary beast often called the “Abominable Snowman” is that’s a large ape like creature believed to live in the Himalayan mountain of Asia. The Yeti is described in different ways but is usually postured as a big, upright, walking assimilation with white or gray, shaggy fleece all over its body, height ranging between six to ten feet. Men have also dreamt the Yeti many times in pop culture. An example can be traced back to the monster’s world in the animated film “Monsters, Inc.” among them the character of the Abominable Snowman voiced by John Ratzenberger, who is friendly monster who lives in the Himalayas. Another example is the Yeti's inclusion in the video game "Uncharted 2: map in ‘Among Thieves,’ where the creature is found within the snowy ranges of Nepal. Regarding analysis some proponets claim that the legend of Yeti may be rooted in real animals that may be spotted in the Himalayas including the Himalayan brown bear or the Tibetan blue bear might be mistaken for this huge ape-like creature amid the snowy gauntlet. Some have estimated that it may just be a cultural belief that has been handed down from one generation to the other maybe as a story to warn people about the harm of the mountains. Whether the legend of the Yeti is true or false people are still discussing it. Despite numerous sighting, including some less skeptical accounts, and even foot prints none have effectively provided clear evidence for the existence of the Yeti. But, if you asked me I'm sure there's something out there.

The Chupacabra - WK7
The Chupacabra is this weird a mutant from the Latin American lore, especially Puerto Rico where people first reported it in 1990s. The actual meaning of the term Chupacabra is “goat-sucker” which translates to the creature feeding on the blood of goats and other types of livestock. Since then, people suggested it was seen in a number of countries including the United States. In pop culture the Chupacabra can be found in the illustrations of different media forms. One such a cool example you would find in “The X-Files,” in the episode “El Mundo Gira” wherein it has been depicted as a fatal entity that wreaks havoc in a migrant camp. That is also in movies, books, video and games as well, such as the video games: Red Dead Redemption and Scooby Doo. However, if one wants to explain, what the Chupacabra could be instead of that fantastic creature, there is more than one opinion. They’ve dismissed it by suggesting that it could very well be wild dogs or coyotes with mange — a disease that renders these animals skinless and practically bald. Some people believe that it might be due to mass hysteria or may simply be people confusing well known animals. Personally I believe that the Chupacabra is myths and legends plus people misidentify common animals for something more extraordinary.

Japanese Oni - WK 6
Oni is these super cool but scary creatures in Japanese mythology. The witches are generally depicted as though they have claws, unkempt hair, and even horns on their heads. They look so strained that their skin is either red or blue, depending on their mood. This is like a triumvirate of really strong dude fighters who are often depicted as the bringers of disaster and diseases, if you will, the karma punishers. Since Oni exists in pop culture maybe you have come across it without even knowing it existed. The anti-hero has many subtypes; one of the most popular examples relates to Akuma from “Street Fighter.” He’s got this demonic thing going on, you know is heavily influenced by Oni. There is Nago from the “Princess Mononoke” (Great movie, I recommend watching it) after martial transformation, she gets cursed to become devil like an oni. These characters make an Oni a figure that can be discussed and most likely avoided at the same time. So, what’s the deal with Oni? Perhaps they evolved as a result of early man and his primitive and irrational beliefs. In the olden days children could not comprehend natural disaster or diseases so they attributed them to these horrible spirits. Oni could also signify evil or the evil in man The characters of the game could then each be associated with origninal an Oni that represents the evil within them Selina for example was possesed by an Oni that represents the evil in her. As a matter of fact there are no concrete proof that Oni does exist but regardless, they have been depicted in folklore and the pop culture as agents the dark unknown and things that goes bump in the night.

Cyclops! - WK5
Cyclops are one-eyed giants from Greek myth about Odysseus and his companion Polyphemus. They’re that big and please see how muscular some of them are, they even assist Zeus with his thunderbolts sometimes. I mean in pop culture they are in ‘The 7th Voyage of Sinbad’ as big baddies and ‘Percy Jackson,’ where they are both a foe as in Tyson, and allies. Others believe that the Cyclops myth resulted from finding dwarf elephants skulls that had this large opening in the nose area that resembled an eye. Are they real? Likely no but I guess that is cool how myths combine the real with the fictional. It illustrates how primitive men and women attempted to understand themselves and the environment.

lycanthrope/Werewolf - WK4
A werewolf is a man who transforms into a wolf, and the concept is as ancient as it gets and is used in many cultures. In medieval European history, communities attributed certain terrible crimes to werewolves, believing that the persons committed the acts after shape shifting into wolves.A cool pop culture reference for lycanthropy is the movies Underworld movies. These films portray an ancient fight between the vampires and the Lycans, which are suppose to be werewolves. They have a more youthful twist to the werewolf mythos. The remains in modern story depict them as smart and strong instead of mere beasts. But to be quite reasonable, lycanthropy might be resulting from some psychological or medical issue. In fact, there is a thing as clinical lycanthropy a mental illness in which a person truly believes they can turn into a wolf. As well, diseases such as hypertrichosis, which would lead to excessive hair growth, might have boosted the werewolf legends. So I think this is closer to being a werewolf is so awesome must be interesting however, it seems more like a psychological and medical quandary intertwined with culture and phobias. But they are still very much part today’s stories and movies so the legend is not going to fade anytime soon, in my opinion hehe. :D

AMAZING!! AS ALWAYSSS!!! I was always interested in wendigos.. 0.0
WBK 3- Wendigos!
Tumblr media
Have you ever seen a Wendigo? Atleeast know what they are…..?
No?
Ok keep reading and you’ll know!
——————————————————————————
The Wendigo is a mass-murdering monster, or cannibal with psychopathic tendencies, traditionally hostile from the folkloric tradition of the Algonquian branch of Native American cultures, mainly the Ojibwe and Cree people as well as the Innu. It is believed to be an evil thing related to winter, famine and, greed. Wendigo is the representation of the narrative of excessive consumption, what can be considered literally as cannibalism and metabolically as greed. Stories describe it as a skeletal creature, with putrid skin, hollow eyes and always hungry for human meat. As the story goes, people turn into Wendigos as soon as they kill and consume other people when struggling through extreme conditions, like severe winters.
Wendigos are protagonists of this first-person horror video game called Until Dawn. Here, they are people turned into monsters as soon as they started eating human flesh, which stay close to the folklore roots.
This origin for Wendigo could be because there is nobody better to warn a society about cannibalism than the spirits themselves when it seems like it’s the only solution left. For indigenous people the winters were severe, and food was scarce, so the prohibition on cannibalism may have been backed up with supernatural sanctions for the good of the community. The legend could have been used to actually teach the community members a moral lesson of greed and gluttony equated with spiritual decay.
As to the issue whether it is or is not real there is a possibility to refer to the Wendigo as a kind of symbolism rather than the creature. There is no archeological, nor historical perception of the Wendigo being a tangible, real life/legendary figure, however the fears, which are behind this myth, are real and are grounded in the very basic survival fears combined with moral doubts and the evil within each of us.

The Mothman - WK3
The mothman is another cryptid, which was witnessed mostly in Point Pleasant town in West Virginia during the 1960s. When some claimed to have seen a creature as big as a car with wings and red eyes the Mothman legend developed at a very fast rate. All but two of the reports were within the period November, 1966 December, 1967 and most claim that it warned of the Silvers Bridge tragedy. This creature has since then got an entry in the folklore of West Virginia with several books, documentaries, festival all dedicated to this creation. Culturally, the Mothman has appeared in various movies, famous of which is The Mothman Prophesies, which came into the market in 2002, and Richard Gere in the lead role. The film is based on the book of John Keel published in 1975 which is about the relation of sightings and Silver’s Bridge. To some people the Mothman might be a real unknown creature, to others it could be a large bird such a sandhill crane seen at distance due to heightened stress. In my opinion the Mothman would reveal more about peoples mind set and the role of the legends. That is what makes it such a good story, mysterious and feared or at least scary and to top it all off miserable.

This episode of love dead and robots had a pretty interesting depiction of a siren as well! :O
Tumblr media
Hi Blog!!!
Ever wonder if Sirens are real?
Read this and find out!
Sirens are fascinating creatures from Greek mythology. They are often depicted as beautiful women with enchanting voices who lure sailors to their doom with their singing. According to legend, their songs were so irresistible that sailors would steer their ships toward the sound, only to crash on the rocky shores of the Sirens' island.
In Homer's "Odyssey," the hero Odysseus encounters the Sirens during his journey home. To safely pass by them, he orders his men to plug their ears with beeswax and has himself tied to the mast of the ship so he can hear their song without being tempted to steer the ship off course.
The Sirens symbolize the dangers of temptation and the idea that not everything beautiful is good or safe. Their story has been a part of literature and art for centuries, often serving as a metaphor for the perils of giving in to alluring but harmful desires.
————————————-¥¥¥————————————
For me- Sirens would’ve been mermaids. They would not kill men but they would grant people’s wishes. They would be creatures created to give hope. Hope that the impossible exists and hope that the possible exists.

WK2 - Will o' the wisp - 9/20/24
Greeting blog!! So, let's talk about the Will o' the wisp!
those eerie lights that appear in a lot of different stories, you might think of them as a kind of precursor to ghost stories. They show up over wetlands marshes, swamps that's the kind of environment you might see one at night. They also have some association with leading people astray, and they're certainly ghost story material if you ask me, so if you're looking for something to give a bit of a fright, you've found it! The name "Will o' the wisp" literally means "Will of the torch."
One of the neatest and well known references to the Will o' the wisp in pop culture comes from the Disney/Pixar film "Brave." In this movie, the character Merida follows some glowing blue lights that lead her to a witch's cabin. Now, take a simple guess what those little blue light people were? Will o' the wisps, wooo yeah! These appear similarly in the video game "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt," where proffered glowing orbs can lead you to treasure ... probably or danger. Yikes.
The scientific explanation is as follows, these lights can be clarified through the oxidation of gases, such as methane, that are emitted by the decaying organic matter. When these gases interact with the oxygen in the air, they can combust, resulting in those flickering lights. So, while the notion of lights of a ghostly origin is very cool and kind of creepy in my opinion, it's almost certainly just a natural occurrence.
