"If you get up early you can get so much done before 10am," this is true. But if you stay up late you can get so much done after 10pm. Equally true. Let's stop pretending like the morning has Magic Bonus Hours and acknowledge that it's because there's less people bothering you and you can focus
#my coworker brags about waking up at 4 every day to get stuff done#like ok great for you but I prefer to sleep when it’s still nighttime

Real talk how hard is expedition 33 actually because I keep seeing clips of it and I reeeeally wanna get it but for every cool clip there are 47 people in the comments screaming about how annoying it is to play
#it looks like persona gameplay#which is not my favorite by any means#but I CAN play that#and my patience for turn based games has gotten a lot better since bg3#I will say I am not good at video games though#I love them but I am not a good video game player lmao#so how badly is this game going to make me want to throw the controller through the wall?

I mostly ship secunit and art as non-sexual queerplatonic soul mates but I do have to respect the murderhelion shippers dedicated to figuring out how a genderless spaceship and a sex repulsed cyborg who is smooth down there like a barbie doll fuck
#I enjoy all flavors of them#but it really is absolutely fascinating how creative people get to make things happen#the murderbot diaries#mutual administrative assistance#tmbd

dungeon crawler carl is fun because you go into it thinking it'll be an unserious, fun and gratuitously violent action book, and then you get to the very first boss, and then you think, now hold on. Hold on. And then all of a sudden you're seven books deep and insane and also holding on to the indomitable human spirit for dear life and also a crab has to jack off. like holy shit dude. i've got relentless hope and found family in one hand and the world's weirdest foot fetish in the other
#I have this queued up to read next time I have novel bandwidth in the brain#and I’m so hype to be insane about a new book series#DONT LET ME DOWN!!#dungeon crawler carl

A newly created Peri watches a toddler Iris have a temper tantrum. She's just been told she's too young to go on a mission with the crew and it doesn't make any sense to her because she's a big girl now. Can't they see she's a big girl now? She wants to show them she's a big girl now.
She hurls a tablet at the wall. It cracks on impact, and she cowers like Dad is going to be mad. Instead he picks her up and holds her, rubbing her back and murmuring soothingly until the last of it passes.
A newly created Peri has a temper tantrum a bit later. Its just been told it's not allowed to fly into an asteroid belt even though it really could have cleared it. Can't they see it could have cleared it? It wanted to show them it could clear it.
Peri flickers the lights and makes turbulent jerky movements with its steering. The broken tablet slides to the floor. Dad clutches at the ship's controls. His hair is a mess from twisting it in his hands and his eyes are wide. He is speaking to it in an urgent voice. He begs it to calm down. To get itself under control for their sakes. To not to crash the ship with all of them in it.
Oh. It didn't mean to scare him.
It thought it was okay to have emotions.
Dad had picked Iris up and held her when she had emotions. Even though she's a big girl now and she broke his favorite tablet by throwing it at the wall so hard that it cracked.
Oh that is confusing.
What if it wanted to be held too?
#ok OW!!!!!#this is so good but it hurt me so much#I think this kind of upbringing makes a ton of sense for a being like ART#and it makes the way it acts during the events of the books make so much sense#a super machine intelligence raised by a human family#I saw someone say it’s similar to the disconnect when a baby bird imprints on a human#you’ll never be one of them no matter how hard you try#but theyre all you have#and you love them#but there will always be this profound disconnect#🙃🥲#the murderbot diaries#tmbd#asshole research transport

imagine you are a practically unique machine intelligence with human friends, sure, but functionally no peers of your own kind that you feel that you can relate to. and then you DO meet such a peer and it immediately rewrites your understanding of friendship and reciprocity of communication and it teaches you SO much and you like its company SO much. and you hang out for a few days and have adventures and then it goes off to do its own thing and all you can do is hope it's in your neighborhood again sometime. you exchange phone numbers communication protocols and go on your way. you think about it all the time after it's gone. you tell your sister about it. you tell your whole human family about it, which you try not to do but which you can't avoid doing because you. cannot. be normal about it.
and THEN several months later in the course of your extremely dangerous job you get attacked. and your first instinct is to make a run for your bestie, who is great at dangerous situations, because it's the only one who you trust to deal with this, and to get you. you met it for a couple of days. it changed your life. you haven't stopped thinking about it since.
#ART really been having A Time over the course of these books#that aside it’s nice to see a post talking aboht what happened in network effect#and NOT calling what ART did a kidnapping#it was terrified and had a gun to its head and it knew exactly who it could turn to for help#the murderbot diaries#tmbd#asshole research transport

Just thinking about the fact that ART is a deep space research ship. It's obviously not seen everything the universe has to offer but its seen A Lot. And it loves its function! It loves to learn and teach about all the weird and wondrous things space has to offer! But by its very nature as a ship, it's pretty limited in its ability to study much else.
And I think that would grate on it.
And then it meets a really weird SecUnit. A really weird SecUnit who is independent and mobile and doesn't mind if the nosy overbearing and insatiably curious transport tags along with it in it's head when it goes planetside.
SecUnit hates planets. ART wants it to see and touch and smell everything. It wants to experience mud and wind and disgusting lake water like they're precious and new and interesting and it occurs to SecUnit that they kind of are, to ART. Imagine they both go along on a routine survey. The planet is safe (mostly), no one gets eaten, SecUnit's many pockets are stuffed full of samples to take back to the ship so ART can analyze them to it's metaphorical heart's content later.
The sun is setting. The humans aren't packing up just yet, though. There's something more still to see. SecUnit has kept it as secret as one can when sharing literal brain-space with another being, so ART knows its plotting something but can't tell what.
Everyone clambers into tiny boats just as the sun sets below the horizon (not before SecUnit makes sure everyone is wearing their emergency flotation devices. It very much does not want to have to get into that algae infested water to pull out drowning humans tonight)
ART finds the difference in the environment during the planet's night cycle interesting, and the gentle motion of their tiny watercraft is pleasant and soothing according to SecUnit's senses, but it doesn't quite seem interesting enough for SecUnit to have been so secretive about it.
It's startling to feel the smile spread across SecUnit's face as its organic brain releases heady streams of serotonin and dopamine.
'Look,' it directs in their shared feed as it leans over the side of its tiny watercraft.
ART has seen nebula being born. Clouds of cosmic dust formed into pillars and clouds that shine in spectrums of colors that cannot be perceived by most organic lifeforms. It has mapped countless stars and distant galaxies and chased comets across the infinite blackness of space.
It cannot gasp, it has no lungs. But the feeling of sudden awe it exudes pushes the air from SecUnit's lungs in sympathy.
The lake water has transformed from murky and slightly brown to deepest black in the darkness. The stars in the sky above reflect on its surface but it almost seems as if there is a glow coming from the water itself. The boat leaves a trail as it glides across the surface, glowing faintly blue and green.
'Bioluminescence,' SecUnit provides, a little smug at the profound silence the sight has produced in its passenger. 'Algae in the water glows when it's stirred up. It's pretty cool in the dark, right?'
ART knows what bioluminescence is, of course. It's recorded in one of its many, many databases. But as its been learning recently, there is an enormous difference between knowing something and Experiencing something.
SecUnit glances up and spots the other boats in the darkness, checks its feed connections with the team, makes sure everyone is safe. The trails of glowing algae stretch out behind them all, like comet trails but in shimmering color.
The sight still has ART speechless but it gathers itself together enough to pay attention when SecUnit pings it gently.
'Now watch this.'
SecUnit reaches a hand down over the side of the boat and breaks the inky surface with just the tips of it's fingers. The shimmer becomes a riot of little lights and colors, swirling around and clinging to SecUnit's fingers. In the dark it looks as though its immersed itself in the universe itself, stars dripping from its fingers. It slides it's hand in deeper, past its palm, submerged to its wrist, and brings it back to the surface. Entire galaxies rain from its finger now, nebula pooling in its palm.
They don't speak for a while. ART's processing power means that its entirely capable of taking in and processing the data it's receiving from SecUnit in a fraction of a second. There is no real need to focus on it for as long as it does. It has no desire to look away. Possibly ever.
#the murderbot diaires#tmbd#I accidentally a fic? kind of???#I live in an area where this phenomenon happens and I've seen so many videos of it#I need to go see it for myself some time#but even the videos are absolutely gorgeous#and they always remind me of space#anyway something something murderbot and art having a profound moment of experiencing being the universe experiencing itself blah blah#I just like the idea of stuff mb finds mundane being absolutely fascinating to art who doesn't get to have experiences like that#because its a giant spaceship#but now it can bluetooth link up with it's favorite person and go on vacation to weird planets and look at all the things!!!#and maybe the mundane seems less so when you've got your giant nerd bestie having the time of its life in your brain#ok rant over im going to post this and go hide because I haven't written in uhhhhhh 4 years???? yikes#my fic#mine#just realized ART has no dialogue because I am terrified to write smart people lololololol#don't come at me with 'but what about art drone'#maybe sometimes you are a massive heavily armed research transport and you want to ride piggy back with your very tiny secunit bestie#and see things interpreted through its organic senses
