Vale of Leven walking footballers raise vital cash for local foodbanks
Local foodbanks have benefitted from footballers rediscovering their love of the beautiful game.   Players at Vale of Leven Walking Football Club raised a grand total of £613 for both the West Dunbartonshire and Helensburgh and Lomond foodbanks to help those most in need in the area.  And the amount raised came as a shock to player Charlie McGinn, who helped to organise the festive fundraiser.   He told the Lennox: “Two weeks ago when I first put the idea to Phil [Dawson, club coach] we thought we might raise £200, but when I started counting it up we were at £468 after the first night.  “For such a small group of people it’s an amazing result, and it comes after we raised well over £600 for Prostate Cancer UK earlier in the year - so that’s almost £1300 in just six months.”  He added: “The players have been fantastic, they might not be flush with cash themselves but everyone is giving what they can.  “They’ve outdone themselves, they’re salt of the earth – and I always tell them that.”  Charlie also urged more people to get involved with the team.  He continued: “I joined at the turn of the year when we only had nine or 10 members and now we’re able to run little tournaments every time  we play because we get 25 to 30 people.  “It’s great for your physical health, and we have a partnership with mental health charity Breathing Space, because getting out and active is great for your mental health as well.  “We’re a completely inclusive team and we’re always open to new members.”   For more local news from West Dunbartonshire click here .
