Why does Merrill even need the Arulin'Holm?

What it says on the tin. The Arulin'Holm is confirmed by Keeper Marethari to be a tool used for woodcarving. It is also stated it has been around since the days of Arlathan, yet most things from Arlathan are stone, glass, or crystal. Obviously, the Arulin'Holm could have multiple uses. We see eluvians in wooden frames, although most are surrounded by stone or brick. Merrill is single-handedly trying to rediscover a lost craft and all accompanying magics and sciences by herself, so experimentation is bound to happen. Regardless, she gets stuck in the same spot and has to use blood magic to clear the taint from the Eluvian shard anyways. I guess my question is... what does the Arulin'Holm? Why was it necessary?
