How Rolo Rolls Part 19.2: Rolo Requiem! 2 - I Wanted to Throw You Away Like a Dirty Rag, Now I Have Dug Your Grave With My Own Bare Hands!
The situation looks bleak for Lelouch: Nunnally seeems to be dead, C.C. has lost her memory, he has sent Rolo away, and now the Black Knights have abandoned him and want to execute him, which is why he also has to send Kallen away to protect her. At that moment, when he considers himself all alone, Rolo comes to his rescue in the Shinkirô, with the famous words: “Big Brother, I will protect you!” resp. 兄さんは 僕が 守る。(Niisan ha, boku ga mamoru!) in Japanese. In fact, the exchange between Lelouch and Rolo sounds even better in its original language (even though I do not understand all of it).
Rolo was down in the hangar after Lelouch had sent him away, sorting out his feelings, which is how he probably got wind of the Black Knights’ plans. Maybe he even wanted to leave in the Shinkirô prior to that. Whatever may have been the case, now he is back, and in full Lelouch-fanboy mode again, admiring Lelouch for being able to make the calculations for the Shinkirô’s Absolute Defence Field so easily, remarking “My Big Brother really is amazing, isn’t he?!”, being totally unaware of the fact that he is able to do the very same thing. Lelouch’s Little Brother is amazing, too, after all. Let’s not forget that Rolo also manages to wreak havoc on the Black Knights, including destroying their command vessel and to outmanoeuvre Anya, a Knight of the Round!
What’s surprising is Lelouch’s reaction to Rolo’s reckless attempt to resuce him. He is extremely worried about Rolo and does not want him to overtax his heart. He tells Rolo that he has no reason to live anymore and cannot understand why Rolo is trying to rescue him after Lelouch was only using him. This is is surprisingly self-critical and we may hope that Lelouch had used the time he spent alone in his room to reconsider his actions. Maybe he came to the conclusion that Rolo had not been such a bad companion after all. At any rate, he seems to be completely overwhelmed by Rolo’s commitment, and even though he cannot hear it, due to the time-stopping effect of Rolo’s Geass, Rolo explains to him why he is acting that way:
“I won’t stop brother because of this. All throughout my life people have used me like a tool. I was used by the order. And then you used me, Big Brother! Yeah, maybe you’ve been using me for your own ends right from the very start. But, only the time I spent with you seemed real. It was those memories that finally made me - human! That’s why I’m not, I’m not… I’m not a tool. I do this of my own free will. [As a human being.]”
The last line is not in the Japanese text, but it adds a really nice touch to this de-facto monologue. The same idea is expressed in Rolo’s character song Arabesque and in sound episode 19.02, which I discussed in the first part of this series and which we’ll come back to next time.
Rolo manages to get Lelouch to saftey and to land the Shinkirô in a forest clearing, but now his heart is failing, which leads to the hearbreaking scene in the Shinkirô’s cockpit, where Lelouch is bending over Rolo, but strangely not touching, let alone hugging him. Which is a real pity, if you ask me. Lelouch asks his Little Brother “Rolo, why did you save me, after everything I’ve done to you?”, and Rolo answers: “Because you’re a liar, Big Brother!” (兄さんは 嘘つき だから。Niisan ha usotsuki dakara!) Rolo claims that it was a lie when Lelouch told him he hated him and had tried to kill him and, for one reason or another, Lelouch agrees: “Of course. You saw right through me didn’t you. Just what I’d expect of my little brother.” Rolo replies:
“That’s right I thought so. Because I know who you really are inside your heart. I know everything about you, Big Brother.”
To this, Lelouch responds rather ambiguously: Yes, you got it right. Your Big Brother is just a liar.“ ( お前の 兄は 嘘つき だった。Omae no ani ha usotsuki datta. Literally: Your Big Brother was a liar.), placing the mobile phone with the Locket in Rolo’s hand.
So what do we have to make of this. There are two ways of interpreting this dialogue: either Rolo has simply gone into full denial mode and Lelouch agrees with him to comfort him in his final moments, admitting that he has been a liar to the last, or Rolo has realised that, on a deeper level, Lelouch has never stopped liking him, but has been unable to admit it to himself, maybe because he was conflicted about it or would have considered it illoyal towards Nunnally. In the latter case, Lelouch’s remark would indicate that he cannot even be truthful to himself. The actual truth is probably somewhere in between; after all, sometimes it must be hard even for Lelouch himself to tell the difference between lie and truth.
If Lelouch had never liked Rolo, the change that now follows would be all too sudden: Lelouch recognises Rolo as his Little Brother, which is symbolised by the Locket that he first places in Rolo’s hand and later attaches to the tree trunk that serves as Rolo’s tombstone. When he is standing in front of Rolo’s grave, he lists Rolo among the people he has lost, alongside with Nunnally (erroneously) and Shirley. In a close-up we see for a short moment that Lelouch’s hands are dirty, which implies that he, “Big Brother, who has no stamina at all”, dug Rolo’s grave with his bare hands (at least that’s what I want to believe). Lelouch thanks Rolo for saving his life and intends to use it to take revenge on his father.
In the voice-over for the preview of the next episode, Lelouch muses about his relationship to Rolo:
“Rolo! What was our relationship in the end? It’s strange to think that, even knowing the truth, you still - you, of all people! - stuck by me till the very last. Yeah, I aways realize these things when it’s too late. To you, I wasn’t Lelouch vi Britannia, was I? I was Lelouch Lamperouge, your Big Brother!”
If only Lelouch had realised the sincerity of Rolo’s feelings earlier, what great brothers they might have been and what a great future they might have had together, along with Nunnally. Rolo would have had the chance to mature and further explore his own humanity. This episode really brought tears to my eyes when I watched it for the first time, and I’m probably not the only one, which is also testimony to what a great character Rolo is, who managed to capture many people’s hearts, not just his Big Brother’s!

Has anyone ever really thought about the fact that the whole team was so tightly knit that even when they believed that one of their own DID commit a murder they were excited to see him even when he broke out of the mental asylum he was in? That’s some hard core friendship right there.

My mother came to me the day after she died. I wasn’t some kid, I was 23. She came to me… she came to me and told me to look in her dresser, third drawer, behind her pink blouse. There was something there for me.
