Since you posted about how being surrounded by whiteness influences reactions to Tom Paris, do you have recommendations for Trek blogs that meaningfully discuss race and its influence on the franchise?
for sure! off the top of my head @worflesbian @bumblingbabooshka @boophisburnhamae @warpcorecontainmentfield @lostyesterday all have some excellent posts on the matter and are also very smart and cool people

when i’m writing a silly mini fanfic-style joke post about voyager i tend to have chakotay deliver the final punchline and i think it’s because in the fiction he has a mischievous sense of humour that makes it feel right for him to be the one doing so. we see him engineering annoying but harmless situations for his own amusement in tsunkatse and latent image and making dark jokes about shooting apples off of janeway’s head. which is probably my favourite character trait of his because it feels so human and real. of course even the most noble and principled among us can be shit disturbers sometimes. no one is immune to having a little bit of fun

ok but the bashir changeling probably wasn't freaking about abt doing sisko's brain surgery because judging by how well they shapeshift that bitch is old as fuck. and evil medicinal sciences are the dominion's whole orgin thing. why do you think the teams trying to research the founder's illness are doing so badly thay they get executed? because they are all vorta and the one changeling who was good at science got fucking exploded in a sun. that changeling was probably better at brain surgery than bashir. if keeping shit under wraps wasn't of the essence he could have made sisko into a weyoun in 30 minutes tops

Here's the thing is like, Harry being a genius who constantly overachieves, and especially, feels like he has to over preform forever despite the implication that there's no outward pressure, from his parents, a mentor, society, his friends, is a really really compelling concept for a character. All the small hints we get to his past is that his parents loved him, he had a great childhood. And yet— we get that quote, from I think Favored Son but I'm not 100%, where he talks about how he felt he hadn't earned his parents love despite nothing they said or did to make him feel unworthy.
And that's a really interesting motivation for a character being so driven! And then you put him into this environment where everyone depends on Harry so often, he is under equipped and not performing to the standard everyone needs him to can result in everyone dying. He's fresh out of the academy, it's his first assignment, so already an incredibly understandable set up for a character wanting to prove themselves despite no real need— as in, no one is ever expecting less of Harry. They already believe in him. Expectations are met! But you add in this factor of him never feeling like enough, always constantly feeling like he, as himself, isn't worthy of respect or love and therefore has to constantly perform at 100 and ten percent to earn that affection and has felt this way since he was a child is so so soooooo fucking interesting.
But the writers do nothing with it! They only gave him the "overachiever career boy" backstory as a cop out to giving him more in-depth characterization. And you know, it's also deeply deeply racist to give your sole Asian character the overachiever archetype, which cannot be understated even a little bit how racist the writers can be with Harry like holy shit. Harry get behind me.
Like what I'm trying to complain about and get across here is that smart, kind, polite, dedicated, determined— none of those are inherently boring traits for a character to have. Especially a character like Harry, who the writers loved to put into the torture vortex. But the writers only gave him that backstory as a means of dismissal, just "nothing interesting here, star athlete, straight As. Oh personality? he's polite, kind, hardworking. No edge here don't worry about it". Like even the torture vortex is often used as a means of shelving his character for an episode by writing him out of the plot and having him just passed out in sickbay the entire forty minutes!! I have another post talking about how much I love how ridiculous his lore gets because what do you mean he's a star athlete and has an award in pilot proficiency and no one ever mentions this ever, and I do love it!! I love that he's so fucking good at these things but I hate hate hate how they just use it. GIVE ME MORE!!! Harry Kim I am so so so sorry you were forced to be a voyager character you deserved bigger and better things

honestly the fact that many on the voyager crew are outright committing war crimes by the end of the show really makes tom’s pre-voyager shuttle crash seem like small potatoes. oh you covered up your pilot error then felt bad and confessed? your model starfleet ensign best friend just baited the enemy through false surrender. and he’s not beating himself up about it at all
