hi.   the rpc is starting to do a really good job of talking about the amount of whitewashing that has gone into the casting of wanda and pietro maximoff in the mcu,  but to that end,  i am here as your local Roma jew to remind you that gypsy is a slur and should not be used.    i don’t care if it’s said in the comics,  or your favourite shop,   gypsy is a slur and should only be used by Roma,  if they choose to.

gypsy as a word is taken from Egyptian,   where Roma were mistaken as being from due in part to skin colour,    and has been used the term to ‘gyp’ someone,   which means to rip them off or fool it.   gypsy is used to justify horrible crimes against Roma,  when we don’t presently have representation to protect us.   gypsy is not your ‘free-spirited lifestyle,’   it’s my people’s justified murder.

if you are not Roma,  you should not be using this word.   if you are not Roma and your character is,   you should not be using this word.   it is not yours to reclaim.
