I’ve always been confused with DDD, but KH3 acting like I should know what the fuck “He’s a portal” should mean was the final straw, like I’m sure it was for many of us. So I took a good, hard look at DDD, and I realized something important that is bar-none the reason DDD is so confusing to so many people. And this reason is referred to multiple times–by Riku, Young Xehanort, various events–but never explicitly spelled out. So I will do that here.

It is 100% possible for a person to be in a sleeping state themself while still being in the real awake world.

This isn’t even really a theory, we see it happening in two different instances in DDD. This is shown to us in plain sight with Riku in the end of DDD with the World That Never Was. He still has his Dream Eater powers, even though we know he’s in the real world because later Mickey, Lea, Donald and Goofy later join him. And there is also when Sora and Riku enter the Grid, where they use and fight Dream Eaters, even though Young Xehanort states that data cannot dream, and that they’re in the real world during this visit.

So Sora and Riku are aware, conscious, in two different instances of awake worlds, but still are somehow in a state untouchable by Heartless and Nobodies, and instead still attacked by Nightmares and can use Spirits.

So, below are the different chapters of this long analysis. I recommend you read these in order, so you understand my train of thought and context.

• The entirety of 3D was built around the fact that Sora’s got the heart party going on

• Vanitas & Xehanort literally say, “Your heart is a prison but you are not the prisoner.”

Ven, Xion, and Roxas reside in the light of Sora’s heart. They are not prisoners in the sense this is referring to.

• Ansem the Wise quite literally says in Blank Points that some were welcomed into the warmth of Sora’s heart and others were imprisoned in its darkness.

• As we encounter Ven, Roxas and Xion in Sora’s Awakening (Destiny Islands) this is not his darkness. They are not who this refers to.

• Vanitas is the only option here. Vanitas would have gone with Ven when he went to sleep with Sora as they were destroyed together in Ven’s heartspace, and BOTH are connected to Sora.

Vanitas is in Sora’s heart.

Vanitas does not leave.

• When Vanitas says “I am already by your side. I am the shadow you cast, how much closer can I be?” He is speaking to Sora directly in response to a question Sora asked, (“why won’t you fight by our side?”) there’s no indication he’s including Ven in this answer.

• Vanitas’s battle quotes directly tie into his dying statements (‘Become one with darkness’ and ‘Good, I was hoping for some company.’) Again, this is directly to Sora, not Ven.

•This, Ven’s opinion on the matter and their separation in Sora’s heart indicate they never merged and Ven’s heart healed independently. He and Vanitas became too different. When Ven left, Vanitas did not go with him.

• Vanitas in KH3 is confirmed to be a replica with Vanitas’s heart from the past. Aka, just like YMX and MX, he can and DOES exist in the same timeline twice over.

• Sora’s Rage Form is using Vanitas’s stance and red-black coloured darkness. Rage Form is an instance of emotional overwhelm— Vanitas’s bread and butter.

When replica Vanitas is destroyed, nothing actually changes. His heart goes back to the past to finish the BBS timeline, he and Ven are destroyed, and both end up in Sora’s heart.

To summarise:

Vanitas is with Sora

Vanitas never leaves

Vanitas is still with Sora.

While I was researching stuff for the Final World analysis, I had noticed that the aesthetic greatly resembled the aesthetic of Scala ad Caelum.  The water, the bright blue sky, the white cube shaped structures, the way the structures were able to be turned on their head.  It was all too similar.

But I didn’t really have anything substantial to go off of…until I stumbled on this:

Man-made salt mounds at salt farms.  The design of Scala ad Caelum is based on salt mounds.

It’s almost as if Scala ad Caelum was trying to emulate the Final World- whereas the salt structures in the final world are based on naturally occurring salt crystals, Scala is based on man-made salt farming methods.  And if Scala ad Caelum is actually a reference to Jacob’s Ladder as I’ve talked about before, this makes sense.  The place where heaven and earth meet.  The Final World is “Heaven”, while Scala is “earth”. Perhaps a reference to Matthew 6:10 

“Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.” 

It wouldn’t be the first time Christian symbolism/references were used in KH, not by a long shot.  Coincidentally, there is another very relevant teaching in the Sermon on the Mount (which is where “on earth, as it is in heaven” comes from), known as the “Salt and Light” passages.

“Matthew 5:13 refers to his disciples as “the salt of the earth.” This meaning is paralleled in the following verse, Matthew 5:14, in the symbolism of the “light of the world.” Another view is that the Salt and Light passages refer to a duality of roles in the disciples to be like a light from a city, viewable from all over the world, and to be spread out as salt is: to congregate and spread.” -x

Scala ad Caelum was the “light of the world” after the keyblade war, from which “the new world was rebuilt from the light left in the hearts of children”, as the story goes.  It is “the nexus from which all worlds spring”, in other words, it has spread out like salt.
