Since the whir, whir of the ship just kept on, giving Peridot a terrible feeling of urgency, she decided to waste no time and creep up the steps of Steven’s house. “Isn’t it obvious?” she asked. “We leave.” She peeked around the corner of the railing and towards the front door. No one stood before it. Warily, Peridot turned the corner. And then, once she was in front of the door, she transformed one of her fingers into a key. “But the plan is still processing. Obviously, the Home World will find us; it’s only a matter of time.” After she stuck her key-finger into the handle, the lock clicked. Out of the corner of her eye, Peridot looked at Lapis. “When that happens, we will have to move again. Of course, you are not required to stay with me. That would be both imbecilic as well as a waste of time.”
Peridot stepped into the house. She saw the warp pad instantly. “But, if that is what you should choose,” she continued, “then… I have no qualms with it.” She said it idly, as if it held no weight at all. But she knew that something had changed–she knew that if this conversation were to take place before Lapis began her daring quest of friendship, she would have preferred to be alone. In fact, she would have insisted upon it. But, perhaps now, after all this time together, she had gotten used to the other gem’s presence.
Peridot’s feet clanked against the warp pad. “Processing,” she said. Her eyes were full of numbers; they zoomed across her vision. “…Destination found.” To Lapis, she said, “The path diverges. You have two options: the first is to stay here, in this wretched human colony. You could carry out the rest of your existence safely, with little worry of being attacked. After all, the Home World is not looking for you; I am their sole target.” Peridot paused. She tapped her finger to her chin. “Or, you could come with me, and fulfill my former plan.
“So… which will it be, Lapis Lazuli?”
Lapis followed as Peridot moved up the steps, though always lagging a few feet behind her. She followed to the door, too, and stood beside Peridot as she unlocked it. She stood silent, fingers clinging to the sides of her skirt and toes curling against the wood of the porch.
When the door unlocked, and Peridot entered, Lapis hesitated before stepping through the doorway. Her teeth chattered noisily, memories of being in the mirror flooding back to her and causing her to shake. She’d never have thought that this place would create such fear and anger in her. But, the sea inside of her calmed, and her shaking died in a matter of moments. No one was there. There was nothing to be afraid of.
Lapis stared at Peridot for a moment. She found it hard to believe that she really would not mind her sticking around. Peridot was certainly not the type to actually want Lapis around, so what was the point?
Even so, when the decision was given to Lapis—to stay, or to go?—she did not hesitate, for once in her life. She hopped up onto the warp pad to stand beside Peridot.
Her lips pulled up in a small smile. “I have no place here in Beach City. It is not safe here, and it is not safe anywhere else on this planet, for me. Plus, I’m too afraid of the Crystal Gems to stay here with Steven.
“So, I’m coming with you.”

Peridot frowns. When she had been in her spaceship, she had seen the temple on the beach. And when she had come out of the ship, she had seen the Crystal Gems standing guard over it. “I’ll explain on the way,” she says. “There’s no time to waste.”
Without waiting for Lapis, she straightens. And then she bolts out of the warehouse and heads straight for the temple. But before stepping out onto the street, she disguises herself by shape shifting into a dog. It’s the only animal she knows for sure won’t be looked at twice by the humans in Beach City, because she had read in her books about how common they were here on Earth.
Her paws pad against the pavement while she runs. One eye is permanently kept on the sky. Will the gems up there see her? She can do nothing but hope that they won’t, and keep on running. Once she reaches the temple, she turns to Lapis and asks, “While running, did you happen to see a ship in the sky?” Peridot points to it. “They’re looking for me.”
Lapis stares after Peridot as she leaves. Does Lapis want to follow her? She wonders what the green gem is even up to, needing a warp pad. Probably something sinister, she thinks, but there’s really nothing else for Lapis to do. So she gets up, and follows Peridot out, noticing her running off as a dog.
She can’t keep up without shapeshifting, Lapis knows, so she shifts into a cat and races on after Peridot. Camouflage is not something she is worried about, so it’s not exactly the best cat transformation. She calls, “Hey, wait up! You’re going too fast!” after Peridot, but the gem does not slow, and so Lapis is forced to do her best to keep up.
Once they’ve stopped, Lapis shifts back to her human form. “Ship? What ship...?” she asks, turning her gaze to the sky and, seeing what Peridot is talking about, she mumbles, “Oh. I see.” She looks to the other gem again. “So, what do we do?”

Yeah, okay, so. I really don’t have any muse for Lapis anymore. So I’m just going to put her on semi-hiatus and maybe come back sometimes. I’ll keep all of my drafts, in case I need something to write when/if I come back, but feel free to drop them if you’d like to.

Lapis looks over at Kaze. “Oh, um...thank you. I’m glad you like my name...” I guess? She shuffles a little on the ground. She feels a little uncomfortable under the gaze of such an unfamiliar human.
His shock at her reply soon turns to amazement, and she finds herself confused. Usually, when she tells normal humans, they are frightened of her. They scream, or yell, or run away. But not this one. How strange.
“I-I...” she mumbles. She’s unsure what to say. “O-Oh...thank you.” Lapis is glad he’s not going to tell. “I guess I can tell you...if you’re not telling anyone. I, um...I can manipulate water. I can control it and make anything I want with it. So, I summon up the wings like this— and then I just move them around. It’s not very complicated,” she says, flexing the wings gently. “They’re not very stable, though. I’d let you touch them if they wouldn’t fall apart.”
“Lapis Lazuli…” he repeats. “That’s a very pretty name.” Kaze knows a thing or two about gemstones, and he can see why that is her name. It is just now that he notices the gem on her back, which he can only assume is the same as her name. Lapis seems like a very interesting person, and Kaze wonders about her origins.
Then it is in fact revealed that Lapis is an alien, and everything seems to fall in place. Maybe she doesn’t completely make sense according to this planet’s laws of science, but she offers something new, something to learn about. The shock on Kaze’s face is replaced by amazement, and he feels a desire to protect.
Without thinking, words slip past his lips. “…You’re amazing,” he says. “W-Wait! I mean–I promise I won’t tell anyone, really!” Kaze can’t contain his curiosity, and so he asks, “Um, would you–can I ask how your wings work…?”

Lapis frowns. “That’s the exact opposite of what I’m doing. This is my real skin,” she says, glaring. She’s getting tired of this already.
“I know you know what I’m talking about,” she says, matching Jasper’s step back with two steps forward. “That is my friend. That gem should not be messed with, or stolen, because you will have literally kidnapped a human child. I suggest you give him back, or I will have to take him from you, human.” She flexes her wings in preparation, in case Jasper decides to run. She’s no match for Lapis at this point, and Lapis isn’t letting her get away with Steven.
“Yeah, cosplaying.” Jasper raises an eyebrow. Does this kid really not know what it is? “It’s, you know, when you dress up as something you’re not. And, uh… you. And your blue skin. Are doing it right now.”
Sliding her eyes to her pocket, Jasper takes a step back. “I dunno what you’re talking about,” she says. “This thing can’t be your friend! It’s a rock, and it’s mine. So why don’t you go get your own, huh?”

Lapis doesn’t believe her for one second. However, the cosplay question catches her off guard. “Cosplaying? I don’t know what that means. But that doesn’t matter now.
“What matters is that you’ve got my friend, and I’ll need you to give him back.” She finds that she’s got the obvious upper hand here. They’re on the beach; she’s in her element. And if this girl makes one wrong move, she’s done for. “Give me the gem, and I let you live.”
Jasper snickers to herself. Commander Proton is gonna be so, so happy when he sees this baby, she thinks. Bouncing in her boots, she runs down the beach, unable to contain her excitement. However, when Lapis appears suddenly before her, she stops. Her shoes skid against the sand.
“Nothin’ much,” she says. “Just takin’ a walk. What about you? Don’t you think it’s a bit late to be, um”–she looks Lapis up and down–“…cosplaying?”

Lapis finds herself being shaken, and she wakes up, looking up at Peridot groggily. “Wha...” she mumbles, rubbing her eyes. “What’s the matter...?”
She can see the fear in Peridot’s eyes, and it wakes her up somewhat. What on Earth could have made Peridot so scared? “Um...nearest warp pad, uh...

“The nearest warp pad is in the temple on the beach.” She remembers seeing it while she was in the mirror. “But, um, we can’t really get to it. Why do you need a warp pad, Peridot?”
waterwitcch has appeared!
Way up in Earth’s atmosphere, a ship breaches the clouds. Way down on the ground, a gem looks up from her book. Slowly, Peridot stands up. And then she walks over to the door of the warehouse. Poking her head out of it, she looks up at the sky.
The ship greets her eyes. Her stomach drops into her shoes.
“Calculating…” Scurrying back into the warehouse, Peridot throws her book to the floor and then shakes Lapis awake. “Where is the nearest warp pad?”

Unbeknownst to Jasper, Lapis is not far away, watching the house. She’d been posted to guard Steven’s gem until he heals. And when she spots an unknown person entering the house from a side window, she summons up her wings and waits. She doesn’t know what this person is doing, but she does know that they’re not supposed to be doing it.
When Jasper exits the house, with a suspicious lump in her coat pocket, Lapis knows exactly what’s going on. She lifts off, flying silently over the beach and coming to rest on the sand.
“You! What do you think you’re doing?”
a wild waterwitcch appeared!
Jasper has been watching the house up on Beach City’s hill for a while now. There is a gem in there, sitting on the kitchen table–it’s huge and pink and beautiful.
Jasper has to have it.
Now, she’s creeping in through an open window. Slinking down a hallway. And slipping the treasure into her pocket. Its weight drags on her coat. Grinning, she exits the house and traipses down the beach, feeling like the queen of the world.

Lapis hangs her head. Peridot isn’t going to accept her apology, is she? “Okay...I understand. It’s okay if you don’t want to...”

She finds herself interrupted, and shocked when Peridot interrupts her with ‘apology accepted’. Lapis wouldn’t have, in a million years, imagined that Peridot would actually accept the apology. She had only hoped for the best, for her own sake.
“Wait...really? You accept my apology?” she stammers, shuffling where she stands. “I, um...” She doesn’t really know what to say now. She’d planned on not being forgiven and just leaving by request. Her plan has gone awry, and although it has taken a turn for the better, she’s not sure how to feel. “...thank you...”

Peridot’s weapon isn’t out, and there is nothing threatening in the warehouse. In fact, there’s nothing at all in the warehouse other than a few boxes. So why had Lapis jumped? Peridot doesn’t know, and her blood turns to fire. There are a lot of things she isn’t understanding. And that is unacceptable.
However, when Lapis opens her mouth to speak, Peridot’s train of thought derails. “You’ve spent too long around the humans of this city,” she says. “Apologies shouldn’t be given to make up for petty conflicts.” But then, she realizes something: Lapis had thought she’d hurt Peridot’s feelings. And to hurt another is to hurt herself. “Calculating…
“Apology accepted.”

When Lapis hears Peridot’s reply, she jumps a little, but she pushes forward into the warehouse. “Um...” she mutters, eyes boring holes into the floor. “I just, uh...” She hadn’t wanted Peridot to be this cold when she returned, but what else could she expect?
“I just...I wanted to apologize,” she says, shuffling. “I didn’t mean to lash out at you like that. I, um...I’m just insecure about...things. I’ll admit that it was wrong of me to treat you like that when you didn’t really do anything.
“Sorry.”
Peridot has separated her books into three piles. One is for geography and geology, another is politics and human relations, and the last is for the stars. Or, at least, what the people of this planet know of them.
Peridot isn’t expecting Lapis to come back. She doesn’t understand why she had left in the first place, and that makes her blood boil. But now that she’s gone, she figures she’ll stay that way. However, when the door creaks open, her assumption is proven wrong.
“What is it you want?”

Lapis finds herself standing outside of the warehouse, flustered and embarrassed. Why had she gotten so angry? Who knows. She isn’t sure that she’s welcome here now, but she’d thought about it, and she’d decided that she needs to at least apologize for lashing out at Peridot like that. So, here she is.
She knocks on the door, once, then twice, and when no reply comes, she pulls the door open a little. “...P-Peridot?”

“Honestly, Peridot, maybe I’ve just always been defective, because I’ve never had either of those things!” She feels her blood starting to boil with anger. “I’ve always been a follower! I’ve never had any resolve, any goals, not even when I was made. I’ve been a drifter, okay? So just shut up and quit acting like you know everything!” She begins to stand for the first time in weeks, and, leaning against the back wall, pulls herself to her feet.

“I’m going for a walk. Don’t try and miss me too much.” And she’s off, picking up the pace as she makes her way to the door.
And as she steps out, she slams it.
“Why are you so compliant?” Peridot asks. “Where is your will, your resolve? It couldn’t have broken with your age.” Peridot has met several old gems, and all of them were iron-willed. They had had the heads of bulls, and were powerful, like Jasper. Peridot’s eyes widen. “Jasper…” What had happened to her? Had she died when the ship exploded?
Peridot realizes she doesn’t care.
Shaking her head, she says, “I won’t make your decision for you.”

“I don’t want your pity.” Well, actually, Lapis kind of does, but she doesn’t want pity, she wants Peridot to care. She won’t admit to that, though. “Just because you aren’t in a position of authority doesn’t mean you can’t tell me if you want me to leave. Honestly, I don’t want to be here if you don’t want me to be here.” She fiddles with the rock even more. “I don’t know what I want to do, so I don’t know what I’ll choose to do.” She’s more of a follower than a leader, after all.
“If all that was supposed to evoke pity from me, you’ll have to try again.” Peridot turns back to her books. And then she wipes a fleck of dust off one of the spines. “You’re your own gem,” she says. “And I am no longer in a position of authority, so I have no power over you.” If she’s being honest with herself, Peridot has gotten used to Lapis’s presence. If she were to suddenly leave, she would be a bit disappointed. But nothing more. “You can do whatever you choose.”

Lapis refuses to meet Peridot’s eyes when she looks at her. “It’s a good question, and I’m not sure I know the answer to it.” She looks down to her lap and fiddles with a rock she found on the warehouse floor. “I’m surprisingly not angry with you for those things. You were just doing what you thought was right. I don’t resent you for that. Honestly, I think I’m only still here because I know you won’t make me leave, and I know that, anywhere else I go, I’ll only be told to ‘scram’ or ‘get out’ or whatever. But, you know, if you don’t want me here, just tell me. I’ll leave.”

“In war, you would get crushed under those who are stronger than you.” Peridot stares at the floor. If she tries hard enough, it almost looks like Homeworld soil. “You can’t sit around and do nothing for the rest of eternity. Eternity will leave you behind.” She turns towards Lapis. “Why do you want to stay by my side? I stole you away from the Steven, and then I nearly killed you with my ship.”
