What did they put in The Terror that has me buying a million books, reading scientific theses and learning two new languages as a direct result of watching it

like. if you read any of his letters (may we be spared to meet on earth is such a good book, I'd recommend it if you're into doomed arctic expeditions or even just enjoy reminders that people two hundred years ago were still people) you know that fitzjames comes across as a pretty funny, kind, and above all human guy, just some dude who you could probably have a really nice chill time down the pub with. he was good at his job, yes, but he wasn't a Wellington or a Shakespeare or whathaveyou. he's literally Some Guy doing what was a really exciting thing for the time.
and it's not so much that he died under horrible circumstances, that much is a given. but it's the fact that so many people a hundred and seventy years later are losing their shit about him being found. think about that.
real fitzjames probably would never have expected to be recognised like that. no-one really thinks they'll have such an impact that two hundred years later. and yet he did - not because he was a great general or an inspiring poet, but literally because he was just A Guy that we found out about and got emotionally attached to.. imagine telling this random thirty-something that centuries later people would be so happy to see his body uncovered. imagine his reaction. I'm a thirty-something and I'm not a particularly famous individual, and the thought gets me properly choked up. he was literally A Guy, albeit one in unusual circumstances, and we still care so much about him. that's such a big thing.

there’s a certain descent into madness one takes after watching the terror. one minute you’re watching the show with mild interest and the next minute you’re hand painting Robert Scott’s sledging flag to put on your wall

the terror episode 10 we are gone boat scene. truly the nightmare scene of all time. hickey in his underwear on top of the boat giving true deranged energy. feral tozer screaming LET ME OFF THIS CHAIN. CORNELIUS. hodge squatting and mumbling in french with a thousand-yard stare. "i detect a double meaning there". armitage looking as if a shepherd has emerged from the bible and been given a gun. pilkington suggesting opening up a business selling coats out of my girl tuunbaq. manson throwing up. "a man called cornelius hickey told me this expedition was a year in the polar sea." the definitive hickey-tozer breakup. crozier witnessing it all quietly like this isn't the worst day he's had at his job, "you could have just joined up". hickey singing the national anthem off-key and a few hesitant voices joining. "bugger victoria! bugger nelson! bugger jesus! bugger joseph and mary! bugger the archbishop of canterbury!" tozer shouting out orders to fight against tuunbaq despite it all, "tommy, give me your gun. i'm the best shot here!" hickey cutting out his tongue. tuunbaq eating them all. this is exactly what it feels like to get piss drunk with your friends and walk back home through an empty parking lot at 5am.

do you ever think about how silna lost everything because of those men who invaded her home, but she saw enough humanity in them to mourn them and try to save even just one of them (though definitely not the one she would have liked to save because this is a tragedy and only so much can work out in anyone's favor), even as the world she knew came to hate and reject her for things beyond her control that were in fact caused by these strangers who killed her father and destroyed her way of life? or is that just me?
