After using the Death of King Arthur (illustrated by Stuart Kolakovic) cover illustration as a reference for a client, I’ve been gathering images that use a similar paneling structure. Chris Ware’s Candide cover for Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition is a different but equally inspiring version of this. A cousin to these images also appears in the same Penguin book line with Tom Gauld’s Three Musketeers cover.
I grew up reading Art Spiegelman’s wonderfully unsettling comic anthology Little Lit and remembered Chris Ware’s work from there (yeah, I know, that’s not what Ware is known for). Also included here are bonus panel-style illustrations by Kolakovic and Ware.
It’s interesting to me to reference the concept of a segmented page/comic frames as something other than a way to mark time passing (or to mark time passing between full scenes rather than seconds, or to mark time passing in uneven and mysterious ways).
