Doing an A romance route? Want N or M as a BFF but because the code is broken you keep getting F? Here’s some Book 1 and 2 choices that will get you the BFF of your choice!
Notes:
I could not have done this without the Book 1 and 2 guides made by @wayhavenguide A million thanks for all of their hard work on those. Also for their posts on what is going on with the coding for BFFs in Book 3 in the first place. I’m not a code diver so I would never have figured this out otherwise.
In order to get N as your BFF, they must have more friendship points than everyone else and everyone else’s friendship points must be tied. Increasing M’s friendship will give M as a BFF. Technically there’s more wiggle room with M but I’ll leave other people to go down that rabbit hole if they want. I’ll make a note on one M conversation in book 2 that very easily allows you to switch between N and M as BFFs and you don't have to sound like a jerk about anything in a conversation
A, F, and M should have around 13 total friendship points by the end of book 2 (My math got off somewhere. The number is equal, I'm not just sure what it is). N will have about 20 points. You can cut some N approval dialogue if you want as long as you don't choose an option that increases friendship for someone else.
I made this with my detective in mind but it should be a good enough base for others to check the guides and figure out how to change things to fit their detective’s choices. This is not a service I’m offering. There are probably plenty of other ways to make the math work out correctly, this was just the one that worked best for me.
Major path choices include: Douglas route, did Agency tests, supernatural research, Tina knows, rescue Sanja, Maa-alused treaty with agency. Others will be noted in the guide. Friendship will be at the max level for all of Unit Bravo to start Book 3.
Similar to the formatting of the guides, I won’t by typing every option out in an effort to keep this from being too long. It’s designed to be used in conjunction with the guides for more details. Sharing google docs always seems to allude me so this is just one long post.
In Book 1, some A conversations have both romance and friendship options. It is important not to choose the friendship options so that has been taken into consideration, if you wonder why a seemingly friendly option is noted as an exclusion.
I was able to get the Book 3 opening with N using this. I haven't tried to go further in the book but I see no reason why it shouldn't keep working from there.

Hi! Your book 1 and 2 guides are super amazing and i really appreciate all the work put into them! I had a quick question about the Bobby relationship stat. Not sure if it's been asked before or is included in the guides, but I'd appreciate any input.
In book 1, when you first meet them and the game asks what your impression of them is, it sets the old relationship to 0, 1, 2, or 3. Does the new relationship with Bobby add onto this original stat or does it start a new counter?
For example, Bobby old relationship = 1, and by end of book 1 you gain 3 points into the new relationship. Will Bobby new relationship = 3 (because it starts a new counter) or 4 (including the point from the old relationship)?
Thanks!
Hello! Bobby, much like Rebecca, is a character that has two distinct relationship stats. The first is static after you set it upon first meeting them; it sets the tone and overall "foundation" of the relationship. It will never change, that's always going to be the nature of what the Detective's relationship was with them in the past/at the beginning. The second relationship stat is developed over the course of the series. It doesn't add anything to the original value set, but the two stats can interact in different ways depending on your choices.

Since it's the 25th and we can ask questions about Book 3 now: After 2 books of the Love Triangle, can I FINALLY be polyamorous in Book 3? I want both A and N, dang it!
I doubt the author is ever going back on her decision in regard to that, but maybe if everyone keeps the faith long enough...🤣

I was replaying book two and I think who you get at the beginning of book two might be who you chose to walk with after the carnival fire in book two.
I was aiming to get Adam as my best friend. First time I walked with Felix on my Mason route, I got Felix on the mission at the start of book three. Second time I chose to walk alone, and I got Adam.
It might be a coincidence but I thought I’d mention and see if it helped anyone.
Hi! The game does remember which character the Detective is with in that Book Two scene, but it does not have any direct influence on who the Detective is with at the beginning of Book Three.

I was just wondering if you could tell me how high science has to be to pass the stat check during the first fight with the trappers in book three. Thank you so much!
Hi! Science has to be 70 or higher in that scene to pass the stat check.

I’m sorry I must have missed that when I read the opening for the book 2 guide I’m sorry to have bothered you guys about it
It's no worries! 😁 Just bear in mind that we're never ignoring asks that go unanswered for a while. If we don't respond it's either something we've covered on the blog or in the guide already, something that's going to take more of a deep dive into the code than we have time for at that moment, or a question beyond our capacity to know as a fanblog that can't read the author's mind 😅. No harm done! 💖

Hey I asked a question yesterday and I thought about it so I went though book 1 3 more time with the love triangle route one where N had more romance points, one when A had more romance points, and one where they were both equal in points before the showdown with Murphy cause after that you get one final time to get more romance points with A and N and there was no increase so do the romance points gain after going for the love triangle route count as hidden stat increases
We state in the introduction to the book two guide section that the relationship increases on the love triangle path are one of the hidden stats.

I wish I could say that quick building a Detective using Book 3's set up and manually choosing which character you want to be their best friend was a viable solution, but unfortunately you'll still end up with F by default on A, M, and N romances and the no romance route, and get M by default with F romances because of the coding errors described previously. The only way to "hack" it into getting scenes with the character you prefer is guaranteeing the point spread is as described in that best friend guide 😬

I didnt even know you could have a best friend. No one is my best friend. :(
Don't worry, it's just shorthand for "the non-romanced character in Book 3 that the Detective is closest to and gets extra scenes with". If it was working as I think was intended, it would more or less be determined by whichever member you gained the most Friendship Points with for the first two books, but because of the coding mistake it's not functioning that way.
You'll know which character was determined to be your Detective's Best Friend based on which member of Unit Bravo is with them in the very first scene in Book 3. It's F for most playthroughs because that's the way the code is written right now.

Book 3 Best Friend Guide
Hello all! If you've been having trouble getting your desired member of Unit Bravo to be recognized as your Detective's Best Friend in Book 3, you're not alone! This is related to issues within the code of the game. We can't know when or if those issues will be patched, but in the meantime, here is some guidance to help you get your desired outcome!
Book 3 makes these determinations based on your friendship scores at the end of Book 2, and please be advised that some of these will be much harder to achieve than others. Hope it helps! 💖
N Romance
If F is your desired Best Friend, get their Friendship Points higher than M's or A's. F > M or A
If M is your desired Best Friend, get their Friendship Points higher than F or A, and make sure F doesn't have more Friendship Points than A. M > F or A, and F ≤ A
If A is your desired Best Friend, get F and M's Friendship Points to be equal, and get A's higher than them both. A > F and M, F=M
M Romance
If F is your desired Best Friend, get their Friendship Points higher than N's or A's. F > N or A
If N is your desired Best Friend, get their Friendship Points higher than A's or F's, and make sure F's are not higher than A's. N > A or F, and F ≤ A
If A is your desired Best Friend, get F and N's Friendship Points to be equal, and get A's higher than them both. A > F and N, F=N
F Romance
If M is your desired Best Friend, get their Friendship Points higher than N's or A's. M > N or A
If N is your desired Best Friend, get N's Friendship Points higher than M's or A's, and make sure M's is not higher than A's. N > M or A, and M ≤ A
If A is your desired Best Friend, get M and N's Friendship Points to be equal, and then get A's higher than them both. A > N and M, N=M
A Romance
*Note that there is an additional coding error for Best Friends in A's Romance Path that makes non-F selections particularly difficult.
If F is your desired Best Friend, get their Friendship Points higher than M's or A's. F > M or A
If M is your desired Best Friend, get their Friendship Points higher than F's or A's, and make sure F's are not higher than A's. M > F or A, and F≤A (This is very difficult unless you deliberately miss every point opportunity with F for Book 1 and 2)
If N is your desired Best Friend, get M's, F's, and A's Friendship Points equal, and get N's higher than all of them. N > M and F and A, M = F = A. (This is likely impossible unless you do not get any points with anyone except for N during Book 1 and 2)
Love Triangle
If F is your desired Best Friend, get F's Friendship Points higher or equal to M's. F ≥ M
If M is your desired Best Friend, get M's Friendship Points higher than F's. M > F
No Romance
If F is your desired Best Friend, get their Friendship Points higher than N's, M's, or A's. F > N or M or A
If M is your desired Best Friend, make F, N's and A's Friendship Points equal, and then get M's higher than the rest. M > F and N and A, F=N=A
If N is your desired Best Friend, make F, M's and A's Friendship Points equal, and then get N's higher than the rest. N > F and M and A, F=M=A
If A is your desired Best Friend, make F, M's and N's Friendship Points equal, and then get A's higher than the rest. A > F and M and N, F=M=N
Note: if you're struggling to achieve ties, skipping all available points except for the desired Best Friend's may be the easiest solution

Ok, so, as I understand the code (again I might be the one in the wrong here), and using your screenshot as an example.
You import a save where you romanced N. You have 15 points with A, 10 with M and 13 with F. Logically, A should be your best friend, but the way this code works, you'll get F.
It first checks for a tie. There is none, so the highfriend variable remains empty. The code then jumps to the next check: A.
A is higher than both M and F, so the variable changes to: highfriend="adam"
Then it jumps to the next check: M. Since their score is lower than both A and F, the variable remains the same.
But it then jumps to F's check. And since F is higher than M, the variable is changed to: highfriend="felix"
Anon this is me virtually sending you bouquets: 💐💐💐💐💐💐💐
You have quite literally prevented me from staying up all night trying to figure this issue out. I think you're exactly right. In other words, it's not an issue of the game exactly "prioritizing" the best friend selections that people keep getting by mistake; it's that the correct selections are missing the necessary finish inputs that would lock them in, and the code is moving on until something else at the bottom gets chosen.
I don't know when or if that's ever going to get adjusted in the code, but in the meantime I will try to type up a weird and backwards workaround to try and help people get the best friend path they were actually working towards in the first two books 😅
And so concludes what was nearly wayhavenguide's villain origin story. Thank you kind anon!

So I went to check the code for the friendships, and if I understood it correctly (I could be wrong), the gist of it is (brace yourselves because it's complicated): On N's route, you're very unlikely to get A as your best friend unless M and F are tied because the code checking if they have more points takes priority over A. Basically, if F has more points than M, F is your friend, and if M has more points than F, M is your friend, regardless of how many points you've accumulated with A. Same goes with A's route. You're unlikely to get N as your friend unless M and F are tied. On F's route, it goes like this: If M is higher than N, M is your friend regardless of how many points you have with A. Otherwise, if N is higher than both M and A, N is your friend. And if A is higher than N and N is higher than M, A is your friend. M's route works the same as F's but with F taking M's place in the code. The LT is pretty straightforward and works as intended since there are only two variables to check. On the No Romance route, it gets really complicated. If F is higher than any of the others, they'll be your friend, even if one has more points. If F is lower than everyone or tied with the lowest score, then it goes to M. If M is tied with F at the lowest score, it goes to N. Then if all three are tied and A has a higher score, they'll be your friend.
Hello anon!
I am not going to tell you that you're incorrect because I fully look like that one guy in the conspiracy theory gif trying to sort out what could be going wrong with people's best friend selection. Especially as all of those things you just said 100%, completely track given the specific issues everyone's been sending us about it.
But with the app and website code I'm looking at... none of those issues you described should be true. As with the Maa-alused outcomes from Book 2, the order of how it's being weighed definitely matters, and after the existence of any ties is resolved, unless I'm so out of practice with this that I'm looking it wrong (honestly... quite possible!), A's point values should be sorted through first after the ties, which would make it easier for A to be designated than either M or F on N's route in all circumstances unless M and F were tied, in which case F would be chosen regardless of if A was highest. Still a potential issue there, but not the one you describe and the one other people seem to be actually having in game.
Tumblr media
Likewise with the other routes. Your description sounds like what people are actually experiencing, but with, say, the friendship route, what I'm reading is that F's high point values are evaluated dead last, so it should in theory be harder to get F as your best friend than it is anyone else on that route. I genuinely don't get it.
Tumblr media
Your input is very much appreciated, as I am very lost and confused 😅

I think friendship points might be buggy for every route because I ended up with M as my best friend on both my N-mance save and my A-mance save when it should have been A and N respectively.
Interesting! That definitely sounds possible, the script that determines which member is the best friend is a little bit strange on all routes except the love triangle and the friendship path, so it wouldn't necessarily surprise me if something is going wrong there for most people's playthroughs. I can see a clear error in the coding for the Best Friend in A's romance, as these two circled things should read "natef" instead since A is the Love Interest here. I'm not sure if that would actually be the source of the issue with your A-mance save though, since A's friendship point level would naturally be lower anyway... as the lower threshold that would be kicking it to M or F as the Best Friend even if N was correctly inserted.
Tumblr media
I haven't spotted any errors like this on the other routes though, so most likely something else may be the issue people are having. If my very fried brain had to guess, it might be that the code is checking for every possible tie combination first on the single LI paths and that's favoring characters that aren't the highest in points, whereas the Love Triangle and Friendship routes check for the higher point values between a pair of characters until a "true" selection is found.

Have the friendship points requirements changed for book three? As I remember I had the most friendship points with Adam ending book two, and got Felix at the start of book three. Not complaining because Felix is great, just curious about the markers.
So, new markers are indeed added for Book 3, but none of the additions to those thresholds influence who's designated as the "Best Friend" at the beginning of the book, because it's determined by the imported Book 2 friendship count. The only thing I can think that might explain getting a best friend you weren't expecting is if you're romancing M, and A was actually tied with F in Friendship Points, as on M's Path, a tie between A and F resolves with F being chosen as the best friend.
There may be something else going on to explain it that I've missed, but that's all I've been able to see so far.

Hey! I don't know who to ask this... that's why I'm here I hope you can help me.
I'm playing twc book 2 on my phone, so I have a new save for the third book, following your guide. I'm playing the Love Triangle route, and for some reason, when I choose shy options for A, the "flirt" meter(? doesn't change, but when I choose shy options for N, it works, I don't know why u.u (i haven't try with bold options because it's not how my detective is)
I don't know if I explained myself correctly and sorry if my english is bad 😅
Hi! So... the explanation for this comes down to a confusing error within the code of Book Two. The display on your stats screen shows a separation in the "Bold" stat for A and N, and there indeed are separate variables nicknamed "abold" and "nbold" that control those meters. However, for many of the Love Triangle scenes that would influence the separate "Bold" stats based on your choices, the game instead uses those choices to influence "bold", without distinguishing if it's for A's Bold stat or for N's Bold stat.
To put it another way... the Love Triangle is supposed to have two separate "Bold" buckets, one for each LI. It's supposed to be that clicking a shy or bold choice for N will influence N's bucket, and clicking a shy or bold choice for A will influence A's bucket. Unfortunately, the Love Triangle instead is coded to have three "bold" buckets, and one of them is invisible to the player. Most of the time, the Love Triangle's choices are influencing that invisible bold stat, because the code doesn't distinguish "abold" or "nbold" in those choices. Other times, the code will make that distinction and the change will be reflected on your screen accurately.
Hopefully that makes sense! You're not doing anything wrong, it's just how the game is written to be.

Hello everyone! In anticipation of tomorrow's Book 3 Release we just wanted to give a quick run down about how things are going to go here at Wayhavenguide over the next several weeks. As mentioned before, we have every intention of publishing a guide for the third book, but the turnaround for its release will be longer than it was previously for Book 2. This is both out of necessity given our schedules and out of a desire to preserve our stress-free enjoyment and experience of the series.
That means a couple of things. First, we will not be answering any Book 3 content related questions until after April 20th. The plan right now is to leave our ask box open so we can hold onto those questions and answer them when the time comes, but that may change if the amount gets to be overwhelming. Secondly, all messages involving how long the guide will take, when to expect the guide, if we have an estimate countdown, etc. will be deleted automatically. We will provide updates on our progress when possible and appropriate.
We understand this may be disappointing to some, but we ask for patience given the nature and intensity of such a fan project, and the reality that the complexity of its completion grows with each subsequent book.
Lastly, we wish everyone a happy release day! We hope you all enjoy the next stop in Wayhaven! 💖🎉
